With games like Street Fighter abandoning 2d sprites for 3d ones does anybody believe this might be the future for fighting games . Now Kof 12 had the same development time as Street Fighter but it lacks the polish and personality of previous King of Fighters had compared to Street Fighter 4 carefully kept the identities of there characters the same. In my personal opinion 2.5d might become the standard to the general gaming populace but for more seasoned and experience players 2d will remain the status quo.
It will be.
It might be.
NOTE: Im enjoing Battle Fantasia a lot lately.
It will must definitely. Don’t get me wrong, I like 2D sprites as much as the next person, but as they say “The times, they are a changing!”
Besides, at this point in time, game developers can make great 2D fighters w/ 3D graphics. Like SFIV and Battle Fantasia.
I sure hope not…
Probably.
I hope so.
I think 2d still has a little bit of life left. However, when TV’s and game consoles start hyping the next resolutions beyond 1080p there will not be much choice. It will be too many man hours to draw everything. As much as I love 2d and drawing pixel art myself it’s just going to be an artwork before long.
It’s pretty much only a matter of time at this point. Battle Fantasia and SF4 have proven that the approach is viable, and I think 9thpixel’s on to something with the gradual expansion of resolution. Given the production headaches involved with games like KOF XII, I’m sure SNK will be weighing the 2.5D approach a bit more heavily once the KOF XII art assets have run their course.
BlazBlue will probably hang onto its sprites for at least as many revisions as Guilty Gear, I should think, but I wouldn’t be surprised by an eventual 2.5D game, given that Ishiwatari originally intended to do Guilty Gear in 3D and now has much better models (of production) to work from.
Really, I like 2D sprites and all, but I view this change as ultimately necessary. I view this as a largely benevolent change in production methods that (and this is key) allows these games to get made in such a way that they still seem somewhat relevant to publishers on this side of the Pacific. Anything that shows promise to get more 2D fighting games made, period, when just a few years before they were on the razor’s edge is aces in my book.
2.5D shows the rest of the world what most of us already know, that 2D fighters are still viable and relevant in this day and age.
Games like SF4, battle Fantasia, and Fate/UC have more or less convinced me that 3D games can successfully emulate the feel 2D gameplay style, but I’m still waiting for the game that really proves it beyond any doubt.
My biggest concern is that 3D does not support characters that can significantly morph their body (Faust, Dizzy, and Eddie from Guilty Gear for example, or Twelve from 3S and Arakune from Blazblue) as easily as 2D. I often find these sorts of characters to be among the most interesting and I would be very sad to see them go.
No thanks sir
If they have to be, let them look like KoFXII. Sprite overlay on a 3d model. Gets you the shading/shadowing from 3D without making characters look retarded (like Abel. WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH DUDE’S ARMS?).
er, yes.
because its ten times cheaper, ten times easier and ten times more likely new or non hardcore fighting gamers will be impressed by the razzle dazzle of fancy 3d gfx.
my biggest problem with 3d over 2d for characters is that they dont feel right.
they just dont seem to move with the same sleek snappy feel of proper 2d.
also i dont think 3d gfx are good enough.
maybe next gen or gen after 3d will be able to look just like 2d or something.
2d plays better, looks better, and overall makes for a beautiful presentation. 2.5d is okay and all, and no doubt raises the brow of the next gen. But old gen mostly differs, I hope we don’t see 2d vanish I feel we will have lost out on something what I thought was once timeless.
It definitely makes more sense financially these days. Also the quality has really been improving. Old ones like rival schools felt weird and floaty, but new ones like SF4 and TvC actually feel really tight to me.
However, I do like old school 2d better.
I think by now both looks very good when the right amount of time and effort is put into either style.
For Capcom? maybe, but 2D isnt going out anywhere, at least not in Japan, a country that 2D is an art and a part of the Anime culture.
This. Pretty much, 2D fighters will be around for a good while.
Financially yea. Most likely, but I feel like 2.5D games just don’t have that same “feel” as strictly 2d games. Maybe its just me but its irked me with every 2.5D game (especially SF4). Maybe it was just a design decision but thats pretty much the only thing that keeps me apprehensive of the whole format.
