Will 2.5D fighting games become the standard in the future

Sadly, it’s likely that this trend will become the standard, as it’s much cheaper than painstakingly creating good looking sprites.

It’s all a matter of some letting some devs have a crack at it really. IMO, Morrigan’s model in TvC is a good first step what with her wings and all. This is why I really wish Capcom gave Ono a chance with a new Darkstalkers, the guy was ready and willing to tackle doing these kinds of animations in 3D.

I feel the same way. There is something 2D that 3D graphics just cant copy correctly. Perhaps in the next generation of systems where the hardware is powerful enough. Even then I would still appreciate a 2D fighter over a 3D one.

Yeah, probably.
But there might also be a true 2D game but in the style of Odin Sphere/Muramasa, with hi-res “paper doll” style.
And eventually something just hi res, like HD Remix but much better looking.
Whatever comes after BB will probably look like anime quality.

Anime quality :expressionless:

I don’t really like it for SF but I want it to be true, just for a Rival Schools 3!

Yeah, let’s face it… That’s what GG/BB has been aiming for all along. So far they’ve had to do “MSPaint anime style”, which worked fine, but somewhere down the line they’re gonna have smooth lines in them sprites.

Well Ono is definitely going to be using 2.5d for all Street Fighter related games in the future so, we might see the inevitable CvSNK3 , MvsC3, and rival schools sequels appear in 2.5. But that will bring into question timeless quality as 3d graphics become more evolved this games could possible render themselves obsolete just by graphics so 2d is probably going remain the standard for companies like Snkp, and Arc System whose characters personalities retain that j pop anime quality that many like.

Yes 2.5 is the new standard. SNK will probably go bankrupt and dissolve for good after they announce XII’s complete flop and all fighting games marketed anywhere other than japan will have to adapt to new technology.

Like it or not that’s how it’s gonna be.

There’s nothing wrong with 2.5D it is actually easier to make a game 2.5D than it is to make the game with dedicated high resolution sprites.

KoF XII was announced long before SFIV … And SFIV still beat it to a release date. Sprites are archaic and make artists work harder than they have to.

Well if SNK goes bankrupt the worse we could hope for is a Capcom merger that puts it on the back burner while Street Fighter Universe games continue to be created. I mean look at the Ex series great characters but a little legal trouble and they abandoned the better characters for years even though they no longer had beef with Arika. If Capcom sees that certain characters in KoF are unmarketable like Benimuara and other fan favorites that look to ambiguous or has no mass appeal they will try to do some retconning Like Capcom USA contradict and misinterpret every thing to appeal to Western gamers . Also sprites are some of the most complex things to develop in all of gaming because if something is off just a little bit it can be a game breaker .

SF4 looks great… can’t understand why some people hate it

the engine is really moddable it seems, so it should be effortless for Capcom to make new games on top of it.

go, go MVC3 and Vampire Savior3!!

i hope not, 2.5D lacks of something that 2D has
2D FOREVER!

fixed

man your avatar is scary but badass at the same time…

I’d be fine with it if the animation wasn’t so clunky feeling…

I much prefer TVC’s style over SF4’s. If only they’d made TVC on the same arcade board as SF4 then it could have blown it away.

TVC’s on last generation technology, so I’m keen to see what that style could look like on Taito X2 and above.

Yeah TvC’s animation has a nice quick feel to it, unlike a lot of 2.5d games. It has its own problems tho, like a few randomly ugly models (like ryu with his tiny head and big ass square arms). For the most part I think it looks good tho.

Ono said that they have done all of what they could do street fighter in 2d with 3rd strike , but then again Ono and Daigo Ikeno are a bunch of jackasses that can’t come up with original designs that are ripoffs or stereotypes. I mean check out King Cobra the rawest karateka ever passed him up for Rufus and Abel.

Street Fighter IV didn’t take four years to make.

I don’t know what you guys are talking about 2.5D has been the standard for years now. Rumble Fish, *Rival Schools, *Star Gladiator 2, Street Fighter EX, Naruto, *Dragon Ball Z, and many others. Up until recently, (BB, KOF12 etc) there hasn’t been any major 2D sprite based games.

Eventually, they’ll be completely fazed out. It’ll be a few years before that happens though so enjoy it while it lasts.
