Wii Thread 4.0, WEEUWEEUWEEUWEE!

Quoted for the absolute truth. I have to play it myself before I state if she’s “whiny” or if it’s nerdrage, but the exact same thing happened with Terra when they finally portrayed her using more modern storytelling (in Dissidia: Final Fantasy). Everyone had it in their mind she was one way (in this case, some badass Red Sonja with magic and a mecha) when in fact Terra is pretty much a vulnerable, slightly timid teenager (aka what I imagined the whole time, but I digress).

Samus is most definitely not as fragile as Terra, but at the same time, she’s gonna have some moments where she’s not gonna sound so tough, particularly when she’s alone (and not killing things in a super suit). Even dudes like Dante, Kratos and Ryu Hayabusa (the real NES version) had introspective/reflective moments, and none of them were any worse for it.

Yeah, basically.

If they actually made her whiny I’d be pissed, but I suspect what the fanboys call “whiny” really means “she doesn’t act like token badass femme fatale no. 8”.

This whole ‘issue’ with Nintendo and voice acting for their main stars is probably never going to go away and for the time being I have a feeling that this game is going to be used in both arguments. I actually don’t mind Samus’ voice from what I’ve heard so far in the clips but I’m still in the ‘Link doesn’t need a voice’ camp. Unfortunately I’m fairly certain that regardless of who voices him in any future games (I’m guessing at some point Nintendo is going to have to attempt to give Link a true voice in one of the games…especially if people keep making a fuss about it) that I’m going to hate it…even if they put Steve Blum.

The moment that metroids learn to hold rocket launchers is when the galaxy is in far deeper shit than it realizes.

^ You’ve basically addressed the same things that I was thinking when I was watching it. I’m wondering if the Ridley/child crying scene she’s talking about actually has Current Samus looking afraid or not. Ridley and Samus have had a long history if IIRC from the canon of the series. IIRC Ridley was the one that basically killed off her parents and made her an orphan wasn’t it? I’m sure that’s what that whole scene is supposed to be alluding too. Regardless of how many times you put something down like Ridley the fact that this asshat showed up while you were a kid and killed off your parents is going to stay with you lol.

Samus has had the zero suit for at least 6 years now Morgan…people were checking out DAT ASS way before hand.

They put the . You can better hear the voices that you’ll be hearing from the characters. They also lip synched it.

Samus sounds…well…adorable.

Any dude that got their ass handed to them by a tiny blonde with a voice like that would probably feel like less of a man, but she is the main character after all.

Is it just me, or does Samus sound…like a kid?

She sounds adorable and precious. Oh boy, people are gonna nerdrage.

EDIT: LOL twin doubleposting again.

I was already stoked when I saw the teaser at last year’s E3. Now I’ve even more excited. Doesn’t sound like Jennifer Hale is voicing Samus, but I’ll live. Besides, outside of a few grunts and groans, I don’t think she ever really spoke. Game looks and sounds dope. Heck, all those voices sound awesome.

Yeah I saw that the game came in finally at least by yesterday. I’m glad to hear the game is pretty fun. Reviewsso far seem to be pretty solid for now. Tell us if your opinion changes or if you have any other experiences you want to share.

This game is really fun, especially for people who like extreme challenges. I completed the Main Game yesterday and unlocked a Bonus Mode in the process. I’m guessing that’s where the other half of the levels comes from. Anyway, I decided to take on the Gold challenge. By this I mean going stage by stage in Trial mode to collect Gold Medals. You earn a medal by collecting all 10 feathers in the stage and completing the stage under a certain time. It is possible to not earn a medal, despite having collected and cleared the stage. As one would assume, getting a gold means you completed the stage with “master level” speed!

So far, I’ve only worked on 1-1. And I am STILL working on 1-1 because it is very difficult for me to get the gold.
I would say this challenge is right up there with stuff like unlocking the Master levels in a Super MOnkey Ball game, or S++ing Chapters in Ikaruga. It’s the kind of challenge I’d feel proud of myself for completing. Somehow I doubt I’ll do it.

Here are my stats for 1-1 so far.
Stage 1-1
Score: 11,960
Time: 0:38:66
Medal: Silver

That’s a tremendous improvement over my first Bronze run, but still… no gold!

I want to talk a little bit about the technique I discovered that has helped me improve my times. By drawing a vine to the neck of ivy, you can move her along much faster. However, this is very difficult to keep steady. It’s easy to accidentally move the cursor in front of or just below ivy, which would decelerate her. The deceleration, of course, is worse if you change her direction by drawing a bit of vine in front of her. So if you’re going to screw this up, it’s “better” to do it in drawing a vine under her.

I can imagine this being an easier game for the DS, not that I’d want that. I’m HOPING the required time for Gold on this stage is 0:35:?? because I don’t know how much better I’ll be able to do compared to my best run posted above.

There are two things I wish they’d done with this game. (1) Each world should have had its own piece of music. For the main game, that would mean 10 different songs. I didn’t like that they reused music. The music is delightful, but not very lengthy. Reuse just makes it feel cheap. (2)The ability to record replays. Being able to upload them would be even cooler. I kind of hope all games are headed in that direction.

This isn’t really a third wish, but I guess it kind of is. lol. You know, I’m kind of disappointed that folks aren’t buying this game by any means available. The only other message board I post at is Ign’s. I’m over at the Wii Lobby basically talking to myself about this game. I know GAF has a small thread about it too, and again… very little interest. So I was just thinking, what if EVERY game had a built in Message Board? Maybe that would ensure that people who are playing these games would have the fullest group of people to discuss it with.

Game is great. It is different. The mechanics rock. It kind of reminds me of Kirby:CC. It can be VERY challenging if you opt to take on the challenges outside of just completing the level.

While I was perusing Neo Gaf’s Other M thread(which by the way is all over the damn place lol) I spotted that Epic Mickey is going to have a Collector’s Edition. Something of interest also is the Wi-Fi logo on the upper left of the actual game box.

Looking forward to Metroid Other M since it’s not one of those FPS games that I’ve had no interest in whatsoever.

I’ve played Metroid 1, Super Metroid and Fusion (had no interest in playing the rest) and I know next to nothing about Samus’ personality to make any sort of judgement call about how she acts really. I’m not too sure how anyone could. Samus is just you as a girl in a robot suit up until this point. There’s not even enough info to form an opinion on how she acts period IMHO. Unless something happens in the FPS games which I will never play.

All of the movies on the Wii Channel make it look fun and really easy to control, even when you have to point the Wii-mote. So long as the maps present some sort of challenge (unlike Fusion) I’m more or less fine. Pretty excited about a 3D Metroid that at least looks interesting me.

So I keep hearing that the Nintendo Wii is supposed to be approximately TWICE as powerful as the GCN, and more (how much more is not clear to me) powerful than the original Microsoft Xbox…

… then how is it that I’ve not seen visuals like this in any of it’s games? Doom 3 running on the supposedly inferior Microsoft Xbox, FIVE YEARS ago:

Compare Doom 3 to Goldeneye Wii, a game scheduled for release a few months from now… as in, more than 5 years after the release of D3 on the Xbox:

I know Goldeneye isn’t exactly an ugly game, but in terms of raw technical fidelity I don’t think it can touch Doom 3.

What’s going on here?

The only game I would say that looks like something you couldn’t get on last gen consoles is Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. Truly a gorgeous game. I want to see more studios paying this kind of respect to their visuals.

If we can get more games looking like Silent Hill and Doom 3 on the Wii, I would be very happy indeed.

I brought this exact point up around 2 years ago in the earlier wii thread and to be honest I have no idea why that is other than the fact that maybe developers are afraid to spend the time and money to make a game as graphically detailed as doom 3 when the wii market is as finicky as it is. Why spend the time and money to make something look nice when you do something slightly half assed and make the money back and then some easily without much risk? Then there’s the whole thing with Xbox at least being able to project out 720p IIRC and Wii can only project out 480p. Wii could have definitely have benefitted at least from 720p even if I’m satisfied with the way the games that developers actually put effort into look. Honestly this far into it’s lifetime I’m not going to expect Doom 3 graphics anymore…if they eventually get to that point then awesome but I’m more looking forward to what Nintendo has learned from this generation and implementing that into their new console. I have my 360 for when I need games to pop out my eyeballs for now.

It really shouldn’t be THAT hard to get Doom 3 graphics on the Wii. Like I mentioned, that was 5 years ago. Surely techniques have advanced since then and getting a game to look that good wouldn’t be all THAT much of a risk?

Then again, there’s a part of me that thinks maybe the Wii isn’t capable of putting out those kinds of visuals? I mean, as far as I can tell, High Voltage are considered the visuals guys on the Wii front, and even they haven’t put anything out that looks near as good as Doom 3 did on the X Box.

This will be my last post about Ivy the Kiwi? here and at Ign (unless activity picks up). I think folks over there are getting tired of me bumping my own thread with progress reports and thoughts.

I may not be able to convince people to get this game, but maybe this guy can.

The game actually has more color than the version in this video. And wow! Most skilled ItK player ever!!!

Also, stats update!
Stage: 1-1
Score: 12,110
Time: 0:36:25
Medal: gold

That’s the first stage in the game, and it probably took me 20-30 tries to earn that gold. I will not be working to improve on that run anytime soon. My goal is gold for every stage, and there are over 100 of them. Long way to go, folks! I currently have a silver on 1-2 and will be working on that until I get gold… all the way to the final stage. I’m not going to go into detail as I did at Ign, but just thinking about techniques and applying them at key points in the stage made the differences in my runs from bronze to gold. This is where the replay value is for me. I am compelled to play to that level. I guess I really enjoy the mechanic and the levels that were designed for it.

So, my top 3 suggestions for this game before its development ended would have been:
-online features
I think any game with multiplayer should have an online mode. They could have even kept the splitscreen option as the Battle Mode, and included single screen for race and score modes. Replay uploads would have been nice too.

-greater music variety
The music is delightful. I just think the package would have been better had every world had its own theme song.

-greater graphics variety
I’m in agreement with PeteDorr about this. See the review above. It doesn’t bother me much because like he, I feel the weight the gameplay carries here, and it is powerful stuff to a certain breed of gamers. But as with the music, strengthening this area of the game would have made for a better overall package.

^ I’ll be sure to add it to the list. Mr. Naka looks like he did a nice job on the game.

HVS is are considered the visual guys on the realistic Wii front…especially considering a lot of the processes in how they make their games graphically. In terms of pushing the system period it’s usually going to be Nintendo even if it’s not on the realistic front. And in terms of ‘that much of a risk?’…the reason I’m saying that is because there are games on the Wii that clearly effort has been made to do something awesomeand they’ve ended up tripping and falling on their face commercially…and then you have . There are of course exceptions but to be honest at this point I’d almost say that Nintendo would have to be the one to back one of the third party companies to make it happen so that their name can be on the package. Some people joke that Nintendo could possibly present shit and have it actually sell…I’m not so sure it’s too much of a joke anymore considering state of things currently. (Note for clarification: No I’m not saying Nintendo is selling shitty games I’m merely trying to make my point about the finickiness of the Wii audience).

I do believe that the audience that would like a game in a graphical style exists somewhere within the Wii audience the problem is I believe most of them have a lot of doubt from the plethora of shovelware that’s been chucked onto the system…so they want to make sure that what their purchasing they don’t want to end up regretting it later even despite the fact that they’d be more than willing to drop $60 on a game that they found out was 4 hours long the hard way.

Meh…or yeah maybe somehow someway ‘2 gamecubes stuck together’ does not equal an XBox for some dumb reason. Come to think of it…does anyone know of any other game on the Wii besides Brawl that dual layered? That’s the only game I can think of that I currently own that’s actually dual layered…does quick search through games nope…actually MP Trilogy is dual layered as well.

Spider-man Shattered Memories for the Wii is apparently equivalent in content to it’s PS3/360 brethren. Of course there’s a small bit of wagglan…but apparently it’s only there when neccessary (good…someone else gets it). Of course if you have a 360/PS3 I’m sure if you’re planning on getting this game you’ll probably want to play it on those systems. Trailer.

Metroid is officially out guys…I look forward to hearing your stories/rants on the game.

Honestly, I’m tired of Team Ninja thinking absurd gameplay mechanics are good ideas. I’m really skeptical about this game.

So I?m about 3 or 4 hours in to other m and I?m enjoying it so far. The game play is pretty fun and the scenes so far have not been as cheesy as I thought they were going to be. The controls are solid with only two things I feel like mentioning one is that the d pad is good but the joystick would have been better the other is that I?ve been having some trouble with those cool one hit kill moves. It?s not terrible but it does slow things down or get in the way sometimes. Also switching to first person is easy and I like that there is a slow motion effect to you don?t get killed while switching. Will probably play more later or tomorrow.

About 2 hours into Metroid Other M. Not a mind blowing experience or anything but it’s fun and the controls are pretty easy to get used to. If you dig the 2D Metroids and want something really similar to that experience in 3D than it’s a good fit. I still want Nintendo to make another 2D Metroid though but this will kill time for now.

For once the game doesn’t go through the famous video game syndrome, Metroid syndrome. You know the one where the video game character loses ALL of their weapons in the sequel for no reason whatsoever!!! She at least still can turn into a ball and drop bombs. The only thing is you have to WAIT for the General to approve the use of certain weapons. Please tell me I still have my hyper speed run and General hurry up and approve it… :wonder:

ROFL how come everyone gets a Freeze Ray in the game when it starts and not Samus? That’s my go to weapon MAN! I kinda miss characters turning all blue and stuff when they get hit with the ray because now there’s all ice around them. I used to like color editing bad guys.

So far so good. The thumbs up / thumbs down bits in the cut scenes are a bit on the silly side but I just chalk that up to strange strange Japan.

I’m about 3 hours into Metroid: Other M, and I’m really enjoying it thus far.

This is pretty much what I envisioned a 3D Metroid would be like before the Prime series came out (which I loved).
I like control setup, although it does occasionally take time to find the targeting cursor when switching to first person. I don’t mind the backstory too much (tho I could do without it also), even if the voice acting sucks, although I did prefer Samus to be silent and more mysterious as opposed to injecting some drama into her character.

I do have a beef with the fact that enemies no longer drop missiles and health power-ups. It’s seems ridiculous and too easy to be able to fully replenish your missiles and one sub-tank just by running away from a fight (when possible) and pointing the remote up.
I have yet to experience any camera issues that people seem to think plague the Ninja Gaiden games, and I really like the in-close finishing moves. They add a new layer to the action without getting too over-the-top.

So far, I really like this game. I wouldn’t say it’s spectacular, but it’s definately good, and worth playing if you’re a Metroid fan.

On a side note, there’s a reason why we don’t seem Doom 3-like visuals on the Wii. The Wii is nothing more than a GameCube with a different interface. I’m willing to bet there’s little to no difference between the 2 consoles as far as internal components go (aside from the optical drive and input devices).
