Wii Thread 4.0, WEEUWEEUWEEUWEE!

Bingo. I don’t care about roms or anything like that because I’m not interested in pirating anything. I know with home brew you can do some cool stuff including turning on DVD playback. I’m moving the wii out of my tv room and downstairs so my kid and wifey can play it and watch movies. I just want to make sure if I do hack it that I won’t run into issues like with the psp, which requires firmware updates in order to just play games. I also don’t want to void my virtual console stuff.

Speaking of which, I’m running out of wii system memory. What’s the max ammount of memory I can put in the system via memory card? Can I play my virtual console stuff that way? Or does it have to be on the system itself?

Also, just to be clear on hacking, guys, we have a thread all about hacking a psp and hacking an iPhone. It’s talking about where to get roms that will get you in trouble. I do not care if you talk about home brew or anything like that.

Ronin: You will run into issues with firmware updates unless you wait for a fix from the community and use that rather than updating via nintendo. Otherwise, everytime you update your system will revert. If you screw up the hack you can brick it, but I have yet to hear of a case where an update bricked the system. If you wait for a fix from the community, then you won’t be able to play lots of games as they come out that require them (like the new mario for example). It gets pretty tedious keeping it up to date, and you pretty much force yourself to go the rom route for VC and wiiware since there is no way to DL them without being connected and there’s no way to transfer the games legally between systems.

@RoninC

I’m going to jump in here with my .02 cents. Hacking does force you to have to keep up with the scene but which can be a little annoying as nintendo releases firmware every ten seconds (or so it seems) however if you put on the proper hacks you can prevent a lot of frustation. My wii is brick protected as I have a preloader on it and if you get a loader for HBC that will usually take care of any game that you may be behind on firmware updates for. For instance I was still sitting on 3.2US when muramasa came out as I had no internet at the time. It would not load in disc channel (it was a legit disk) but it did in my boot loader. Also there are programs that you can load that skip the update on disk. I can’t comment on those personally as keeping up with scene updates and my boot loader has served me fine. I think there are also Shop channel hacks to keep you still able to purchase wii ware titles but I tend to not have broadband more often than not (don’t ask…my ISP sucks right now) so I haven’t bought a wii ware title in years. To put this in perspective I use all legit games…hacked because its cheaper than buying a Jap wii.

Now I’ll just throw my .02 in the ring as well.

When it comes to homebrew on the Wii there are two rules you follow. Never update till you get the OK from the community and always have a way to recover your shit if it does get fucked up.That’s pretty much why I have my shit done. If you remember those 2 things then you should never have an issue. And RC if you need anything further clarified then get at me.

And I figured I’d drop this off here as well.

It’s my Gradius ReBirth review. I’ve been in this thread forever shouting how much the crack the ReBirth series is and now it’s recorded for the whole world to see. I’m also taking a look at Contra and Castlevania as well this week. I’ll post those up as they come out.

I’m really excited for Red Steel 2. I’m hoping it’s as awesome as it should be. Just 6 more days…then I can run through as many people with a katana as I want.

Sakamoto on Metroid: Other M

soooo apparently Samus being a woman at the end of the first metroid seems to have been a complete afterthought lol.

Resident Evil Creator Opens New Studio:

named Tango. I thought he was with Platinum with Kamiya but apparently he’s just been working freelance?

IGN Fragile Dreams: Farewell review:

6.7 Matt reeeeeally wanted to like this game too lol. He had issues with contols (specifically no lock on or strafe for enemies, and you can’t change the sensitiviity settings so you’re going to have to stick with what turning speed is there). Also complained about the some of the fetch quests they sent you on…he mentions one in particular involving running after some kid for 45 minutes. Reading the comments it seems to be a mixed bag so far from the people who have actually played it. If you’re picking this up ring in your own thoughts.

Red Steel 2 - Exclusive Customizable Controls Walkthrough

they ripped it straight out of The Conduit and added more stuff. Awesome…I’m probably going to spend at least the first 20 minutes of the game making sure I get the controls just right.

Red Steel 2 - Enemies Vignette

Edit:

Oh yeah before I leave for my SFIV get together

@RoninC

You can put your wiiware and your VC games onto SD cards and also play them off of them now. I can’t remember what the number of the update but it was last year. You can use High Capacity SD cards for the wii of up to 32 Gigs now. There should be a little icon at the bottom of the Wii’s screen that’s sort of blue near the lower left that has SD on it and that will allow you to access anything that you’ve moved onto the SD card and be able to play it from there. You can also set anything that you dl from the Wii shop channel directly onto the SD card as well. I should probably update the front page with that info as I had completely forgotten about it. I’ll get to it the next chance I get.

Hopefully it doesn’t pull a no show at E3 like it did last time.

IGN Cave Story Review:

8.5 looks like commentors have a bone to pick with Daemon lmao. They are correct though…he doesn’t really mention the fact that just about everything has been redone for this game.

My hype was through the roof for Red Steel 2 but it’s faded a little bit due to reading some mixed impressions on the game. I’m hoping a couple of reviews pop up tomorrow. If they’re positive, I’ll preorder this beast on Amazon and get those two exclusive guns. Either way I want the Motion Plus bundle because I’ve been wanting a second one for Sports Resort.

If you think about it, these reviews are gonna be huge because if this game is a success, it’ll set a new precedent for the FPS genre on the Wii (and it would’ve been able to do it even moreso had the game had true 1:1 swordplay like Sports Resort).

^ I’m assuming the people who have played it so far got the game from some place that broke street date. Where are you reading the impressions from? I wouldn’t mind reading some of them.

Edit:

decided to do a bit of digging on the Neo Gaf forums and found their Red Steel 2 thread.

There’s one review they posted that gave it an 8.5 and then another gave it a 6.5 which one of the points was taken off for it not having blood. rolls eyes Seriously now? How the hell did Uncharted 2 get all those perfect scores if all anyone cared about was blood? Also found it a bit too cliche which I could probably see. I’m going to buy the game regardless when it comes out. When I get a chance to really dig in to it I’ll give impressions.

According to some people in the thread…Toys R Us is giving another MotionPlus for free if you buy the MotionPlus bundle. Don’t know how true this is or not.

The 55P4Q7duaVo&feature=video_response"]pirates seem to be enjoying the game at least…and Ubisoft is actually putting some [power behind it. Commercial may be kinda meh but it’s better than throwing your game out there and hoping for the best lol.

QNIUsa05zI8"]I think Monster Hunter](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTdmRR9U_3s"[/media). Scottish hunters ftw!

My bad, I shoulda specified a little better…I was talking about IGN’s positive impressions vs. Joystiq’s negative impressions

EDIT: Okay, after looking over the videos and stuff that you posted, my hype meter is almost full again. And it turns out that the Toys R Us offer is true! Good looking out, that’s a pretty sick deal.

^ I’m wondering if this guy is upset that you can’t just shoot at everyone willy nilly if they’re blocking your bullets? Like he shoots a random low tier grunt and expects the skilled ninja to also take the bullet as well without any other tactice or something? In any case it impressions seem to be up and down right now.

Cave Story for Wii Ware is out

Podcast stuff:

IGN’s review will get put up at 9 am (their time i’m assuming). He did have some issues with it but he did have a good time with it. Sounds like 8.0-8.5. His arms are hurting lol. Game is about 10-12 hours on normal difficulty. Soundtrack is awesome. Praise for the graphics.

yyyeah…that’s about all that came from the podcast really since news has been pretty slow…that and the fact that Optimus Prime decided to ruin the podcast. Yeah…they’re probably definitely gonna get some hate mail for all the cuttin up they did.

Yeah…so ignore IGN once again, Fragile (yes, I still call it by the Japanese name) is excellent. Yes there’s no lock on, but combat is easily manageable. It plays more like an FPS in terms of aiming and targeting, and I’ve had no issue with it. The graphics and presentation of the game are simply amazing (most notably the game’s opening, I absolutely love it), and the story is extremely sad (think Lost Odyssey’s dream sequences for those that have played it) but also extremely well done. It’s short, but it’s a old school Resident Evil style game at the pure base of its design so I expected that. I’d definitely play this folks.

Sorry for the post!

It’s not just IGN. In either case though, thanks for your impressions Infini and if you reccommend it I’ll add it to the front. Has any one else played this game yet?

Edit: DAMN YOU SRK!!! shakes fist

IGN Red Steel 2 review:

8.6 Awww… .1 off out of my predicted range. complaints included the game accidentally doing the wrong moves every so often and the third part of the game felt off with your character over powered.

video review

I’m going to pick up this game now and head to work. I won’t be able to play it until later tonight.

Edit:
GT also put up there’s as well.

GT Red Steel 2 review

8.6 don’t have a chance to fully watch it.

So I’ve played a good looks at watch I guess…3 hours or so of this game (Red Steel 2) since I got back. So far I"m really enjoying this thing =D. Getting used to the controls in the beginning and how the game worked took a small bit of getting used too and as I expected I spent a good 15-20 min near the beginning tweaking the controls to the sensitivity that I wanted. I still don’t feel I got them perfect for me but I think they’re pretty damn close. Stabbing and running through people with the katana is so fucking satisfying…especially the assholes who decide that they want to take pot shots at you while you’re dealing with the cohorts. Quickly dashing over to them and delivering The Guilliotine (Overhead jumping sword slash) followed by delivering a right punch to the face to lay them out almost feels like the perfect ‘Fuck You!’. I just recently picked up The Eagle (Sword launch attack) and was having a lot of fun with that. Spin attack is spammable as hell. See a bunch of people in a group? Dash in between them and let it loose and then run through. Then there’s the no look stab finisher where the game tells you someone is attacking you from behind and instead you end up gutting the poor bastard lol. I almost whipped out some Bruce Lee wails anytime I did that but I caught myself.

So far I have the difficulty at normal and the challenge is pretty decent. The first time I died was against Payne but that fight fun (Payne is an interesting character…The QTE sequence on the truck was awesome lol). I’m still having issues with remembering that I can block bullets but it’s slowly becoming second nature. Which will come to one of the small issues in the game that I’ll get too at some point in a later post.

Story is ok so far…It’s definitely the Elmer’s Glue that’s holding the action bits together at the moment but things are starting to pick up a tiny bit.

Overall though I’d say based on my experience of this game so far I’d reccommend it. I plan for more people to taste steel tomorrow. If anyone has questions on some things I can try to answer them tomorrow.
