Wii Thread 4.0, WEEUWEEUWEEUWEE!

Muramasa is great fun…I actually hope that Vanillaware is working on something for the 3DS since I’m sure their 2D work would really look great in 3D.

Monster Hunter Tri was my first monster hunter game and I enjoyed it. I still pop it in every so often when I get the chance but it was a bit surprising for me how much of a chunk of my gaming time I’d have to devote to it. Then there were the meaty ass fireballs for 80% health when you enter into the room while chasing after a monster. Fun times…

On Wii Ware I’d suggest trying out Cave Story, Castlevania: Rebirth, Contra: rebirth and Nyx Quest to go along with Lost Winds. I’d also suggest keeping an eye out for La Mulana.

Edit:

First 4 Figures is coming out with a pretty awesome looking Dark Link statue. The price on it though will make you have a heart attack though.

Last Story topped the charts over there which is being immediately followed by Valkyria Chronicles 3. Kingdom Hearts BBS Final Mix and DKCR seem to be slipping. The Pokemon train that is White and Black also seems to be slowing down as it didn’t even make top 10. Also of note I don’t see NSMB Wii anywhere.

PSP is still tops. Hardware went PSP, PS3, Wii, DSi LL, DSi, 360, PS2, Lite, and Go

Something of interest…If you read that whole thing on SRK’s front page some days ago that was messing around with the idea of Nintendo vs. Capcom apparently Richard from Nintendo asked Ono about it when they came in to show off SSFIV 3D to them. Ono apparently had to apologize to Iwata because words were put in his mouth and fan interest had raised up pretty loud.

Apologizing for Nintendo vs. Capcom - Wii News at IGN

I’m slightly surprised that the idea got THAT much attention and it could actually lead to some type of deal in the future since I’m sure Capcom execs have $ signs in their eyes right now. If it ever does come to fruition though I have a feeling that it won’t be on the Wii.

My wii hasn’t gotten any love lately.
Interperate however you want.

If Marvel has any say, you won’t be giving any love to your wii for awhile. Still waiting on announcements from NIntendo but they’re so focused on 3DS right now.

So I finished Metroid: Other M. I expected Samus to be really emo, with the way people were bitching and whining about it. Seriously, she pretty much acts like she does in the official manga, and those that read it should already know that Samus does get pensive and sentimental with things concerning her past (being traumatized at age 3 by a huge creature certainly doesn’t help). Even if you didn’t read it, a character that is 100% hardened with no soft spots is a poorly designed one. People should be glad Nintendo didn’t go that route.

As for the first-person view “issues,” I have to call people whiners on that too. Like many others here, I grew up in an era of challenging games, especially arcade. When we had problems executing something, or getting past obstacles, we fucking got better and DEALT with it. Currently I hold the wiimote in a way that makes using missiles in battle easy and reliable. Sure it’s odd at first, but people act like if they can’t do something with ease right away, then it must be a game flaw. It can’t just be that they suck ass and need to get over it.

I really only criticize two things. With sense move you can literally mash the pad and dodge everything with no timing involved, and get nearly instant charge shots to boot. I also found the difficulty severely lacking, save a few parts. I just unlocked hard mode, so here’s hoping I get a real thrill from that at least. Sick game, otherwise. It really does feel like classic Metroid. Very glad I disregarded the negative feedback some people gave it.

^ Pretty much. I enjoyed the game but seeing people make fun of Samus is funny. The game could have certainly been better but it wasn’t bad. It’s just going to be in the lower tier of Metroid games.

There was actually a pretty well thought out write up on the game that someone had sent me that I can’t remember what the website was that pointed out some understandable things in the game from which a good chunk of the hate was from. Like I said before though the only thing that really stuck out to me storyline wise in the game was the hell run.

Kinda cool that Singularity had a reference in it.

By this logic, you can never, ever find any gameplay issues with any game, lest you get called a hypocrite.

Dr. B : Hypocrisy :: Other M : Being a good game

Ooo, bold. As if “hypocrisy” is the only thing it could be. People sure do love using that word when they disagree with someone.

Things can be considered flaws when they are unreasonably bad. I found the aiming in Metroid tricky to get used to in the beginning, but far from unreasonable. I stand by my logic.

Yeah, listen, I didn’t insult you or act otherwise impolitely, so can the passive-aggressiveness. In fact, I didn’t even call you a hypocrite: I said that adhering to the stance of “badly designed game elements are just fine when you get used to it” would eventually, taken to its logical conclusion, result in an inability to call any game bad without being labeled a hypocrite (because Superman 64 is perfectly playable once you “adjust”).

That’s not what you said. As a reminder:

Which is a giant load of “I’m old school because I had to deal with bad game design and that became a giant source of pride” bullshit.

If what you meant to say was that the controls in Other M are not as difficult or poorly-implemented as reviewers and players stated, that’s one thing. If what you meant was “suck it up pussy” when someone legitimately complains about poorly-designed controls, then see my last post.

Dr. B interfaces with the Wii sensor bar with his eyes. His Mad Sexy eyes… excuse me I have to masturbate. No masturbomo.

Looks like a so far the consensus from the mediais that Mario Sports Mix is ‘meh’. Nobody came and picked up the game today either lol. Square…maybe it’s time for that sequal to Super Mario RPG…hmmm?

Hudson Entertainment is No More
http://wii.ign.com/articles/114/1148421p1.html

Apparently a victim of the whole ‘westernization’ fad that’s been going on. The Product and Brand Manager even has a whole blog post about it and his own thoughts that you can read here if you’re interested. Hudson Soft itself is still alive in Japan and any games that they may want to release over here will be handled by Konami. Reading over this guy’s blog seems like they were kicking around the idea of bringing Bloody Roar back but now ‘that’s no goooooood’.

As I said, if something is unreasonably bad, then even being able to adjust to it doesn’t justify it. It’s so common these days for people spoiled on atrociously easy games to bash things just because they can’t adapt to it perfectly within a few minutes. Most people can’t consistently execute a DP in SF games when they first start out, and it’s an easily punished move. I’ve heard tons of people call it flawed, but it’s still a good design because it gives you extra benefits to compensate for the requirement of getting used to not only executing it, but using it in situations where you won’t get punished. Same thing, I find, with the aiming in Metroid. Not anywhere close to Superman 64. Anyway, I digress.

I’d love a sequel to Mario Power Tennis, game was sick. :wgrin:

Man, I’m sick and tired of reading bullshit articles about how Nintendo can “save the wii”. The wii doesn’t need saving, I’ve actively enjoyed the wii since its launch, and have adored the unique experience it provides to the other consoles (which I do own.)

Why do the press insist on insisting that a console that still tops the sales chart every week, and that covers the software sales chart is dead console? I really do hate video game journalist outside of The Escapist, but I thought at least by now they would stop printing these stupid ass articles based on the fact that they don’t subjectively like the games on the wii, so despite the sales, the wii is “dead.” Sorry, I’m too busy playing my Boy and His Blob and DKCR to give a shit about your trash shit Dead Space 2.

I pretty much agree with this statement.

95% of my games that I would consider great this gen were on Wii, and most of my library from this gen is also Wii titles (with 360 in second, and PS3 third). SMG2, Boy and his Blob, Red Steel 2, MH Tri, Muramasa, DKC Returns, Epic Mickey, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and Fragile were all good games.

All these people that say Wii is in trouble are suffering from what I like to call “PS2 syndrome”. PS2 as we all know, had amazing games. But because it had the market share, it also means PS2 had a metric ton of garbage games as well. At first, people didn’t say anything bad about PS2 because it was dominating the Dreamcast and had good titles. But as soon as Xbox and Gamecube came into the picture and started trying to steal PS2’s share, suddenly all these reviewers and critics were badmouthing PS2s like Xbox was the new messiah and Sony had to do this and that to “save” it because Xbox games and even in a lot of cases Gamecube games looked better visually, and didn’t have as much “shovelware” on them (although Gamecube likely would have had more shovelware if more devs made games for it like they did for PS2, due to the idiots that assume Nintendo = kids). Meanwhile, all the gamers like us are going WTF because we all still played and loved our PS2s. Needless to say…we all know how that console war turned out.

No.

This stops NOW.

The Wii is NOT comparable to the PS2 in ANY MOTHERFUCKING WAY. Don’t fucking insult one of the greatest consoles of all time with this bullshit. Getting two, if you’re lucky, three good games every three hundred and sixty five days does not redeem the Wii.

It is a bad, bad,* bad* console. The concept was one that could have been something wonderful, but the execution ended up with the system being an absolute joke to anyone who actually likes video games, with a few exceptions.

It’s library is a sea of shit, and Nintendo are the only ones releasing any games that can be remotely described as quality.

Don’t get me wrong. A good game is a good game no matter what system it’s on (I’ve thoroughly enjoyed a few Wii games myself, to completion. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories ranks pretty close to one of my favourite games of all time), but the Wii, as a console and as an overall attitude to video-gaming, is just absolutely horrible.

It’s even more common to dismiss valid complaints as coming from people who you’ve judged as “spoiled,” when you’ve no evidence they tried something and immediately dismissed it. Especially reviewers from the more reputable places (read: Giant Bomb) who do play through the games and try to adapt. The rest of what you’re saying could still be easily countered with the Superman 64 example, but whatever.

Re: The Wii “dying”

I think the issue is this: the Wii survived on gimmicks, and continues to do exactly that. A year or so ago, I thought, by now, the gimmick would have worn thin, and Nintendo would have used all the money they made with the Wii to offset whatever they lost on the GC, supplement all their damn portable money, and make their next system a powerhouse.

But fuck, the Wii just isn’t dying. And as someone who has been impressed by precisely 2 Wii disc release games (Super Mario Galaxy 1 and Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and NOTHING ELSE), 1 WiiWare exclusive (Cave Story, which I know I could get free but that game deserves to have money spent on it), and admittedly a fair number of Virtual Console titles (which should be made available at a much faster and extensive rate than the slow trickle Nintendo insists on), and who HATES to see games that could reasonably have had a non-motion control option eschew said option to push the gimmick (e.g., Metroid Prime 3, Zelda), it’s seriously aggravating that the Wii is still not only relevant, but the juggernaut it’ll probably remain for some time.

While I love me some Cave Story, some Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and the occasional foray back into Mario Galaxy (admittedly the game is probably soon going on my “to sell” pile, and Galaxy 2 is monstrously disappointing), and that new Kirby looks baller, the Wii is easily the console I play the least and the one that, if I suddenly lost it/sold it/gave it away, I’d miss the least.

I think I’m going to stop the Dr. B quotes soon. Running out of ideas and I really don’t have anything against the guy. Still on the fence. Until then Dr. B is responsible for a great many of the cum stains on my roof.

whoaaaaa whoaaa lol… I’ll throw in my 2 cents on this in a min…I gotta restart my comp and fully read all this.

Japan Numbers 2/10/11
Ace Attorney Investigations 2 Tops the Charts in Japan - Wii News at IGN

Mr. Edgeworth and co prosecuted their way to the top for their sequal. Last Story dropped to mid top 10 and the new White Knight Chronicles for PSP made 3rd. DKCR is still hanging out in top 10 and it looks like Monster Hunter 3rd is starting to taper off. Pokemon W&B didn’t make top 10 but it’s already printed it’s money at least 6 times over by now.

The PSP and PS3 tag team still continues to have the title belt. Hardware went PSP, PS3, Wii, DSi LL, DSi, 360, PS2, Lite, and Go.

Also in other news Nintendo has decided to actually do one last printing of Super Mario All-Stars and GS is taking reserves on it. If you didn’t get it and don’t want to spend $80 (yes…that’s what I’ve heard from customers who’ve been looking around for copies on Craig’s list and etc.) on a copy then now is your chance to do it. Sucks for the people who were trying to make a quick buck but hey…doesn’t matter because in like another year or so the value will still be sky high.

Metroid Prime Trilogy got bumped up to 60 bucks used…hugs his copy and a quick look on Ebay I see some copies of this game going for over 100 bucks brand new and unsealed. Jesus Christ.

Iwata isn’t going to be the only other person from the Nintendo house at GDC. Apparently Hideki Konno (Super Mario Kart director), Kensuke Tanabe along with members of Retro Studios are also going to be there giving talks. Will this lead to anything from them? I wouldn’t get my hopes up. I am expecting SOMETHING from Iwata though…

Re: The Wii Dying

@ Anemone I’m going to assume that you probably read that whole ‘Saving the Wii’ article from IGN. In which case, looking at at the list of stuff that’s coming to the console in comparison to Microsoft’s and Sony’s it’s definitely lacking this year…no where near as bad as that huge lull from a few years back but it’s definitely lacking right now. 2010 was the Wii’s best year in gaming with a lot of great stuff that came out of the pipe but the momentum they had just gathered up is starting to fade off and they need something to boost it up and not just have the latter part of the year filled with their releases. Conduit 2 and Zelda in the first half would have been nice with a small sprinkling of 3rd parties here and there but Conduit 2 got booted to April and Zelda got booted to the second half of the year. It certainly doesn’t help that Mario Sports Mix is apparently ‘meh’.

Calling Dead Space 2 ‘trash shit’ doesn’t help matters either and makes you sound like a fanboy…not saying you are one mind you but you may want to keep that in mind.

@ mrowr As great as PS2 will be remembered for it’s great games I find it funny that people just completely turn a blind eye the amount of crap that also got released on the system. PS2 had a lot of shit on that system and I should know because I have fucking thumb through the damn bins at gamestop just to find that golden nugget that a customer wants me to find. There’s been plenty of time I’ve been looking for something for someone and found something else that mad me say ‘WTF is this shit? I’ve never even heard of it’.

‘Wii is a bad console’ I just cannot get behind period. There are bad games on the system and it’s underpowered in comparison to it’s HD brethren but there’s plenty great and unique games on the system even if they aren’t Call of Reach: Battlefield of Honor IV. It stumbled out of the gate on some things but looking at it now I believe we really got to see what motion controls can bring to the table now especially with Red Steel 2.

@ Specs Twilight Princess was definitely gimmicky when it came to the motion controls…especially the sword but I loved Metroid Prime 3 because of the controls and the level of immersion that had me hooked. I’d even say Metroid Prime 3 was the first game that ‘got it’. Everything in that game felt pretty much natural to me and the only thing that I felt could have been done better control wise wasn’t even really their fault as they did pretty well with what the Wiimote itself was capable of. That game helped mold the motion control FPS scene along with Conduit, FPS games that will get released with Move support have those 2 games to thank for setting a bar and making it work.

Also to understand where I’m coming from…Games that have a gimmicky mechanic to me are the ones that aren’t really put in that smartly or a button could have probably been swapped out for ‘waggle’ a better result, especially if it doesn’t feel natural or if was shoved in just because. Sneaking behind an enemy and giving a small waggle to silence them actually feels natural…Waggling like crazy to get random sword strikes that have no difference in how you swing the wiimote is more gimmicky.

All that being said…Do I personally think the Wii is dying? Yes actually. I say that mostly because I’m expecting them to announce a new console in the next 2 years. If Nintendo can actually pull some games out of their ass (seriously Miyamoto…taps foot and looks at watch Where the hell is Pikmin 3?) and actually make this year great like last year then I’m fully expecting it to be the last great year of the system. Exclusive 3rd party support is nearly nowhere to be found right now from looking at this list which is going to put most of the pressure on Nintendo and co. to crank out games…which they very well could if they actually bring some games that haven’t been released over in Japan over. Then there’s E3…

I also find it interesting that people are still are calling motion controls as a whole a gimmick. It’s almost like they’re in denial or something lol. I understand hating on the motion controls but I strongly don’t think they’re going to go anywhere anytime soon especially since the 2 companies that ragging the most on it suddenly are seeing $ signs in their eyes. Bashing on motion controls as whole won’t help the people that are actually trying to make good experiences with this stuff instead of shovelware. If motion controls are going to be here to stay I’d rather steer it in the direction of games I’d enjoy playing then hate it and have to suffer in seeing more quick cash ins.
