Why so much hate mail for sim?

As someone who doesn’t main Sim, it’s apparent to me that Sim is an annoying, frustrating, practically rage-inducing matchup. Very good Sims know how to zone well, and it’s more difficult to get inside on him than on other characters.

An interesting phenomenon I’ve encountered at least a couple of times recently is that, in player matches, after I beat someone using Sim, the other guy picks Sim too as if to show that Sim is a cheap character or something and that they too can play that game. What I do in those cases is pick whatever character they were using and then just rush them down, cross them up and throw them a lot so that they can feel firsthand the pangs involved with playing a character as fragile and slow as Sim. They usually just quit or leave the lobby after that.

Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside!!:lovin:

ahahaha I was going to write the same thing

I love it when my opponent takes Dhalsim as well, then gets his ass kicked and then rage quite the game :smokin:

LOL.

Sorry Shervin! :stuck_out_tongue:

Haha. Oh jeez, some of the stories here cracked me up.

Seriously, though, I think we had a similar topic already in which I posted my thoughts on it. Most people who play SFIV online are casual players and/or new to the game. If you’re a beginner and face a competent Dhalsim, you’ll feel fucked, quite a lot.
Dhalsim having such a strong ranged game, and a projectile… Most new and/or casual people just don’t know how to get around that, and it just looks “cheap” to them. That he’s one of the worse characters in the game doesn’t matter to these players.

I can understand why Dhalsim players get a lot of hatemail - I mean, he’s one of those superdefensive characters (although there are definitely better ones, haha), and “scrubs” simply hate defensive playstyles. Not to mention that his playstyle also revolves around reading your opponent, baiting and punishing them and fucking with their minds. Of course, thus, to many people a competent Dhalsim seems “cheap” because of that.

I really dont have much respect for sim players because the style of play you have to use him in. I personally dont understand why you would want to be him, your constantly just running from the opponent which is why I think people tend to hate him, however I can respect their abilities to zone characters and get wins(which is all the matters in sf4) I would just feel lame being him

Well, not everyone is able to play rushdown characters well, those usually prefer defensive playstyle.

Just think of Sim as playing on a teeter totter. As long as you keep the guy on the other end you’re cool, but the moment someone like Rufus breaks the handle off and comes sliding in full speed you have a lot to worry about. With all the command normals sim has the wrong one at the wrong time can seriously fuck up your christmas. He requires being tight about 90% of the time. Getting out of a bad situation becomes a game onto itself. I don’t main him in 4 but he’s a regular casual play for me and keeping up that poke game is no gimme. Think of his game similar to shoto zoning with no DP to fall back on. Looks easy from the outside but against someone equally skilled you’re on you toes all day. Much respect to full tilt Sim players. He’s super fun (most important) and challenging at the same time,

Ha I really hated sim players till this thread popped up but now I kinda just want to learn to be good against them. Maybe I’ll use him in training for a bit… maybe. anyways from a sim player perspective what would be his worst match up?

You make it sound like it’s easy playing Sim. He’s not Sagat. He doesn’t have a shit ton of health. He doesn’t have an insane damage output. He doesn’t have a DP reversal he can mash to get out of tight situations and then FADC into RH and juggle into Ultra. You could have a perfect match (which believe me, requires a lot of concentration and knowledge of the match-up) and lose because of one single mistake. That’s why Sim is low tier despite all his tools.

Getting in on Sim is hard, but once you are in, Dhalsim is in an extremely unfavorable situation. Specially against Rufus, Ken, Bison, Zangief and Chun-Li.

I don’t feel “lame” for playing Sim at all. I’d argue that a turtle Balrog, Blanka or Guile is a thousand times “lamer” than Sim. On the other hand, I don’t really believe in “lame” in fighting games. Play to win, and so forth. :wgrin:

But anyway, if you want to get a perspective on what it is like for Sim…why don’t you play him for a couple of weeks? I can guarantee you’ll see the character in a completely different light after that.

In fact I used to loathe Rufus, specially because I consider him one of Sim’s toughest matchups. So I decided to play Rufus exclusively for two weeks: I learned all his BnB’s and off I went. And I realized I really enjoy playing him! Yeah, he has insane damage and more ways to combo into Ultra than I have fingers to count, but he also has some very bad matchups and can have a very hard time getting in. Plus his normals are kinda shitty. So I don’t hate him anymore. :lovin: I love the fat bastard!

As for Sim’s worst match-up: I’d say it’s a toss up between C.Viper, Bison and Rufus. A good turtle Guile can also be a nightmare to deal with.

It’s because Dhalsim can be really frustrating if you don’t know how to fight against him. But people calling him cheap is idiotic, how can a character who is slow, has low health and low damage be cheap? I don’t use Sim but I respect people who do, he takes alot of skill to win consistently with.

I get similar hatemail when I use Seth, he can be just as, or even more frustrating than Sim with his keepaway tactics.

lol, I can already imagine the message.

“y u use teh cheep boss?”

Totally agree with you there. What about Zangief?

Once you know the wheel of options versus gief its not an impossible match. I’d say its 6-4 for gief since he makes one knockdown and he’s gonna vortex (ambiguous cross up to combo/spd). It is the most stressful match up as every steps he is making your are losing. It’s like your fighting a wall that is going to squish you once you are cornered and you have to do specific actions to prevent him to come at you.

Thats how i see the fight whenever i fight a good gief.

Well said . This is exactly how I feel when I’m up against Zangiefs. Still learning Dhalsim here and I’m sure it will get easier once I get more familiar with his match ups.

Getting back on topic. So far the only hate messages I have received are “All you do is press BACK BACK BACK pu$$y” and “Dhalsim players have no skills all they do is run”

I just say “gg”

Apparently they don’t know that Dhalsim’s whole gameplay is based around running, lol.

Hehe exactly!:woot:

I never get hatemail unless I get a perfect. If I get a perfect and/or use Yoga Tower, I get hatemail. People seem to think YT is a taunt.

I main Akuma… and the only thing I gotta say to Dhalsim players is… you guys are brave.

I don’t know, but everytime I play a Dhalsim, I feel that if he can stay away from me for the whole round, he DESERVES to win.

Ok, perhaps some characters have a harder time reaching him (Zangief?), but in general, Dhalsim is slow, weak, and his limbs can be hit. A knockdown hit to his limbs can be quite dangerous (leads to a set up?), which means every hit he does is a risk.

I really don’t know how anyone can say Dhalsim doesn’t require skill.

You hit the nail in the head. Sim is keep-away, but he is the most fragile character in the game when up close. Seth is also keep-away for the most part and even more frail, but Seth has a ton more options if the other guy manages to get in. He has DP, SPD, a better teleport and the option to just wall-bounce to the other side of the screen. Sim? Not so much, other than educated guesses. For example, in general I believe the Gief match-up to be pretty even, but it’s such a weird match-up because the characters are such polar opposites. So if Sim manages to keep Gief out, it looks as if the match-up were 7-3 Sim. But if Gief knocks Sim in the corner, it looks as if it were 8-2 Gief. It’s all or nothing.

In general Akuma is a very hard match-up for Sim. To the point that, during the Bar Fights 2 stream, Gootecks mentioned he had at one point tried to learn Dhalsim but EdMa’s Akuma would beast him so hard he was actually turned off from playing Dhalsim.

And like you said knockdowns are very, very bad for Sim. Getting rushed down when you are Sim requires a lot of concentration and keeping a cool head, which is not easy in the midst of battle. Sim’s low health and stun mean he can get randomed out very quickly.
