Why play fighting games?

As much skill required as sports and FPS’s, and takes individual strategy and personal style as well.

Also, most characters differ greatly from each other requiring a completely different game-plan depending on who you choose to use.

Since I never posted an answer, here is mine.
It fills my delicious soul with YESSSS!

Yup. Instant gratification. Plus, when the matches are really good, the whole experience is rewarding- regardless of the outcome. How many times have you died in Metal Slug (for example) and said to yourself, “Ya know, I may have died, but damn that was good!” ?

Co-signed.

Also, I enjoy the mind games aspect as well. Out thinking your oppenent is just so pleasurable. Nothing’s better than knowing your anticipated and countered whatever the person next to you was thinking before they knew what was up.

Basically, the mind games of traditional competitive games such as chess or Go, but with the simple hand eye co ordination reflexes combined with the nice artwork draws me in.

Yea… that pretty much sums up why I’m into 2D fighters. =P

Some fighters do rely on button-mashing, though; fighters like Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter dominantly outnumber such fighters, which evens things out…

I am absolutely TIRED AND SICK of single player games. I always played 2 players games and single player games, but I just got tired of wasting 50-60 dollah on a game that will last me 10-15 hours. Never liked co-op either. Total waste of my money.

I like fighting games because the replay value is infinite. The…the…bah…the different emotions that you feel, specially when you are playing with someone better than you. Other genre that I like because of its infinite replay value (at least to me) are RTSs. You can, literally, play them for years. People still play Starcraft, HELL, people STILL play Warcraft II to this day.

Do you have no soul?

So true. And when you can play them online, things get infinite…

I’m fairly certain that causing damage to someone, be it virtual or actual, causes endorphins to be released…so it’s kinda like sex.

…I like getting owned

Games are art in every way possible, the making of and playing/execution.

Insane styles and interactions…

I just had this discussion with my wife last night over dinner. I had just finished playing a few DC SF3: Third Strike matches on our new HD TV and felt the need to explain why I’ve given up on almost all other video game genres, other than Shmups.

Here’s what I decided: fighting games offer a more unique experience than any other video game genre. I love that the player must constantly adjust his/her strategy in order to win; I love that when one does lose, something new is learned. Memorizing techniques is only half of the game - knowing how and when to utilize each attack is key. I love competing with myself - usually when I lose, I become even more determined to win (as the fortune cookie said,“One can do what one must.”) My favorite thing about fighting games is the unique comradery/competition that comes with it - having friends over for a few hours of playing, smack-talking and bonding is quite a unique experience.

All of that said, I miss arcades.

It has probably already been said but I will go on either way. I love the genre because the strategies are not limited to game, or even character, but players as well. One must be able to adapt well and know the characters well if you are to succeed. I don’t get this with any other genre because even in FPS, the differences between you and opposition aren’t many, even against different opponents. Having to take into account elevation and where in the stage I’m located with some fighters now, it makes it even more tactical. Of course there are games like VF where frames are so important.

I could go on and on, but really I love the genre. As long as it’s not overtaken by mushroom throwing queers.

jacks off to a combo vid

Amen.

I met all my closest friends (including my current girlfriend) @ arcades

and pretty much all my friends in general I have met through some form of gaming.

When I was younger, I played mainly because it had fireballs - that was back when I was still hyped from reading the latest ‘issue’ of dragon ball.

Eventually it became about the competitive aspect of the game, where players can practice and develop innovative strategies and techniques to improve.

Currently, it’s mostly about the social aspect of the community and meeting new players to develop friendships.

(as you can see, I’m steadily growing into an old fart)

We play for nostalgia. To a simpler time, when arcades still existed. When move lists were printed from Prodigy. When a jump in meant certain victory and Chun-Li wasn’t such a whore.

We play for competition on an equal playing field. On a field without hate or blood, without lag or bots.

We play for honor. There are no sponsors, no extreme games, no boobage, no big money.

We play for perfection. We do not seek defeat in our opponent, but to be better than ourselves. Victory is not a goal, it is a result.

We play for respect. To prove our skills to our peers. To show the world what we have learned and impart that knowledge.

We play for brotherhood. Those we face are not enemies, they are kindred spirits. We may not have met, but we all know each other.

We play for gameplay. On a field where poly-counts and bump mapping don’t matter, where we demand that the learning curve be high. Where gameplay amounts to what you can do and what you will do, as opposed to what you can see and what you will see.

We play for fun. When we play, we awaken a spirit inside us. One that can only be sated in this fashion, in this medium. It brings us joy and sends our hearts into a happy beat.

We play because it is what we do.

i really appreciate the responses in this thread.

seriously, you guys are good.

Hopefully one of my combo vids :karate:

For me its the thrill of testing your skills against someone else. Hell I’m the cat that will root for my opponent in the middle of the match. Fighting games drill the “Practice Makes Perfect” mantra. And for some weird reason its found its way into my everyday thinking. And I’ve met so many people of higher skill levels which of course makes me up my game to even higher plateaus. And mainly so I can let go of my frustrations on something virtual. The Big Bonus is of course the side hustle. Gettin Money!!!
