Why play fighting games?

I think a game like Ico is art.

And at times some aspects of fighting games can be considered artistic, but outside of the notion of fighting games being art becomes relative, so I’ll leave it at that ;p.-

I like all of the stuff you can do in fighting games I guess. For me it seems like one of the best ways to compete. (in games)

Clay Fighter is art (you can make art out of clay can’t you?). It’s both artistic, autistic, and well broken…

TRUE FIGHTING IS ART!!!

Actually, I think it’s because A) I’m too ADD for just about any other game and B) the community, probably the most dynamic community I’ve seen online.

I used to play exclusively with some buddies from Gamespot who got tired of the lame newbs that were overrunning the site. We would play the garden variety FPS and sports games, and everything was pretty chill. But somehow, something was missing from that experience. I just felt something inside me that yearned for more energy, more excitement, more emotion, more HYPE. Just like the kind you get from partying in real life, but without having to throw up and pass out in some random ditch at the end of the night.

One night, while I was browsing through some elaborate but ultimately boring discussion on Gamespot’s user-created boards, I got an IM from somebody wanting me to check out the General Discussion on some site called shoryuken.com. I remember telling myself “I liked SF and all, but why would I want to go back when I got Half Life, Halo, and all this other ‘good’ stuff to play now?”

Then I read the most inspirational story in my life:

“Yo, I just kicked my bitch down the stairs. Bitch lied about using the pill…”

and I just went from there, eventually catching the Domination 101 threads that actually reminded me why I like SF in the first place.

Good shit.

Games are art by definition. Look it up.

I could make fun like saying ‘To get girls’ cause its too goddam funny, but ill say a couple of things.

Like most here i really don’t know why I play it. I just know that i play since WW came out and i was 7 years old and I can remember up until now the day i stayed awake waiting for my import (im from Brasil) Alpha 2 arriving at the post office.
1 or 2 years from now I saw a flyer on the university I go to about a tournament, there I met a few people that are now friends or just random people that you know because of the game and start to hang with them. And I’m now playing this shit every week, visiting srk almost every day, postin on forums, reading about strategies, sticks. I really think that sometimes im way too addicted to this but i’m not sure yet (haeuehauahauea). And the more you dig into it, the more you know about the games and about people that are as must addicted as you, like the dude saying that he dreams about marvel 3, he REALLY must dream about marvel 3, i can imagine he and his friends playing and getting frustrated about the non-existence of other game that makes them so hyped like mvc2 or any other game.
But for me the things that fighting games have the i do like outside of them as well is: martial arts, strategy and material to read. I love reading and if you really get into fg you will start reading stuff like a bastard. Also the technical part of execution and building stick is great too!
Fighting games are a mysterious addicting shit. Period.

These two thoughts resonate with my own. Everyone I’ve met throughout my life has played SF. That’s basically how I met some childhood friends.

Plus, there’s always the thrill factor. Two health meters, 99 seconds, and a full super meter. First to choke loses. There’s just nothing better. Other genres can’t deliver that kind of thrill. And unlike FPS games, your fuckup is your’s alone. There is no one else to blame but yourself for losing. And there’s always room for improvement.

Exactly. I guess it just depends on your defination of art. As a programmer, I can see and appreciate the beauty and art that goes into games.

Well developed games that is.

[edit]:

I enjoy competition. Fighting games offer plenty. I use to play Doom2 and Quake competitively but lost interest in FPS when the Q1 scene faded away.

Single player is incredibly boring by comparison, and to me single player is worthless.

Cooperation lost it’s excitement for me as well. Cooperation can be fun, but it’s no longer exciting to me.

Co-op is like, instead of one person being bored, it’s a group of people being bored together.

“becuase its the way of a warrior”

Yeah, that was what I was trying to get at before. It’s not about your armour or weapons or how much ammo you got or some booby-trap. It’s about you and your skill versus someone else and their skill. No powerups, no graded levels. It’s as fair as versus gaming can get.

You lost? Well play harder or bugger off. No point crying about it being unfair.

i play fighting games because i love martial arts and fighting. but because of my asthma and financial circumstances i cant do martial arts. also i am very competetive. so i play fighting games ^^

Fighting games is the only genre that is capable of creating the mood and setting for the climactic 1 on 1 duel. The character diversity, the unscripted action, the endless competition, the very emphasis on “the fight.” No other genre is capable of getting even close to this. Games like Halo, Quake, Starcraft and World of Warcraft just don’t cut it.

Also, as a fan of Martial Arts, regardless of how “fake” or “nerdy” it is, I tend to get more excitement out of this than out of this.

lol

“Are you fed up of being bullied? Do you want to be able to hand someone twice your size their ass? Do you not mind looking incredibly gay while doing so? If you answered yes, Yes and YES OH GOD YES then Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is for YOU!”

Although I gotta say I find BJJ chicks incredibly hot. It should only be taught to women.

the mental/skill aspects of the games. competition, meeting people.

Because it’s fun, 1-on-1, a unique balance of technical knowledge, human reaction, and a little bit of guessing.

The Drama.

honestly i thought that thongboy thread was one of the most pathetically nerdy things ive ever seen on srk
