Why play fighting games?

Bumping a ~5-year-old thread that pre-dates SFIV

Interested to see if anyone bites.

OMG this quote was awesome! Not to infer, however, that I enjoy causing damage during sex…it just happens sometimes…

Dunno. Fighting games suck.

Fighting games are like coming back home for me. Nothing has kept the satisfying feel of oldschool games the way fighters do.
I like action games, but comparing modern Ninja Gaiden to the old one seems like learning a lot of pointless shit that you don’t really need to except to mix it up to lower the monotony level. On the other hand, the NES games took half a minute to learn but took me years to be able to beat and then to speedrun them.

As good as classic games were, competition and co op will always be the better type of gaming. I don’t really like shooters because I can figure out all of its tricks and dominate after a month of play. With fighters, there is always a stronger opponent, and you really really use the style you want.

Finally there’s all of the fan service and hidden stuff, which we have Mortal Kombat to thank for. It caught on and spread, but it still feels like MK really likes to give the fan everything it can and not just some nostalgia or inside jokes.

The thrill of it all.

I, for one, play them because here there’s a ton of strategy involved, and coming from a team-based game background I needed to find out if I was ever skilled, here there’s noone else to blame and noone else to praise whether you win or lose but yourself, and I like that.

Honestly, sometimes I don’t know. I’m not really a competitive person, I’m not at all into actual fighting, and the whole tough guy/ghetto swag aspect of a lot of the community really turns me off.

But I enjoy the fun and addictive gameplay, and the constantly evolving, never ending meta-game. And I also love the flashy characters, cool visual styles and awesome soundtracks, at least in games like BlazBlue (which is what got me into fighters in the first place.) But really I only enjoy them casually, which is totally why I’m on a competitive fighting game site…

Fighting games are the best form of competitive play imo next to racing games. I’m mediocre at sports games and horrible at shooter games; always getting shot from out of nowhere. Wrestling games are also fun, but they have gotten slow and stale lately (except for WWE All-stars; that game brought the spark back into wrestling games). Puzzle games are also fun, but I’m lousy at them. I would be gdlk if I put more time into them.

Different people, different playstyle. Fighting games also demand practice to be good, unlike Call of Duties.

And finally the sweet, delicious hype.

I play fighting games because they are a breath of fresh air.

Every reason everyone else has already said. With the exception of “Dunno. Fighting games suck.” Because it’s such a fucking lie.

This was worth the 5+ year old bump.

its fun to see you get better and win

Fighting games are a great stress relief for me and a good time hanging out with friends. When vanilla Marvel 3 came out, we made it into a big event. Pizza and hoagies, figuring out teams, nostalgia over Marvel 2, all good shit.

marvel is still more controlled than every OTHER type of video games. you have control over what you are doing. there is no teammate that will make you lose the match. you are responsible for your own actions.

I dont really play much now. but when I do its for the quick fix. I can spend an hour messing with 3s/sf4 online and call it a day.

Because every other genre of gaming sucks.

Its the competition and community that keeps me here. Also, there’s no subscription fee to keep playing.

Remember the quote from Al Michaels: “We love this game!”

…the answer lies in the heart of battle

The core reason I play fighters, and video games in general, is for the excitement, thrill, and hype.

The reason I pick fighters above rts or fps or whatever, as my favorite multiplayer competitive genre, is because I see it as the only genre that truly rewards all the skills that can be brought to it. Strategy, reflexes, execution, timing, multi tasking, game knowledge, focus…All of these have their place. Strategy is king, and the supreme deciding factor in most cases, but that’s natural and how it should be.

There are other things I love too. I love the human interaction (obviously). I love the near infinite possibilities for play styles. I love how no two matches can be the same. I love the almost limitless skill ceiling. And I love how the most skilled player always comes out on top.
