Why play fighting games?

What an interesting question. I’m not even really that great at any fighting game. I’m pretty decent and extremely casual (due to school/work), but I’ve been playing fighting games off and on since WW came out. The funny thing is, I can’t even remember how I found this forum. Since I did though, I’ve got a nice custom stick and have done my best to provide a bit of help here or there in the tech forums.

heh why do i play them?.. well my cousin got me started w/ Mortal kombat then after i learned the rush of actual compition instead of A.I and some of the stratigies and diffrent player styles I.E MVC2 & CVS2 keep away, rush down, traps, cross ups ect… o & u cant forget about mind games, trash talking, and how to minupliate a persons attitude 2 throw them off =D i luv it when i smash on an arrigant player and the get mad instead of finding the flaw in their game plan and the community is funny or cool

i repped a bunch of people for good posts

wish i couldve gotten more but im lazy

good stuff guys keep it comin

The only genre of game where I don’t feel i’ve “wasted” hours of my life.

Things like SRK really keep me hooked, the sense of community, things like that.

damnit, i’m actually ashamed i didnt make this comparison myself.

i always feel that when i’m playing fighting game, it’s pretty much like chess/checkers. the planning, set ups, baiting, traps, etc.
all the aspects of game theory and strategy apply excellently
and of course as said, it’s simply a LOT faster.

this may sound corny, but its also the closest i’ll ever get to being good at a real martial arts fight.

ugh please dont compare fighting games to chess

yes theres some similarities but the fact that fighting games are real time while chess is turned-based makes a huge difference, as does the fact that compared to chess the effect of early game decisions on late game outcomes is miniscule in fighters

Only if you let it.

what the fuck are you talking about

its inavoidable that there are guessing situations in fighting games that you just dont get in chess due to its turn based nature

I think he means that it only makes a difference if you let it. To most sane people, for example, the going-ons in Paris Hiltons life makes no difference at all. It only makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE to those idiots who let it.

that’s pretty much what i was saying…

sorry if comparing fighting games to chess insults chess in some way.
i mean nothing but appreciation for both.

what am i saying…they’re fucking games…:wtf:
just enjoy them

actually it depends on the game and its mechcanis

what fighitng game is turned based?

but i’d agree that in marvel, you can fuck up early and lose your assist, and it will cost you the match.

yeah no doubt what happens early on does influence the outcome, especially in games like marvel and ST, but the relationship between early game and late game is nowhere near as complex as in chess or even something like starcraft

^that chess mortal combat shit they put in deception?

yeah, in SC, if you fuck up and build the wrong thing, and hold your SVC / Drone up for too long, or don’t build a pylon int he right spot, you could die really fast. super turbo only matters early on, cuz you can die so fucking fast in that game.

i wasnt reffuring 2 the turn base but more the eairly game decisions opposed 2 late game one & it could turn out 2 b not so miniscule

what.
language.
are.
you.
speaking?

this is SRK… not gaia online… PLEASE SPELL PROPERLY. I had to read your sentence THREE times to get it, due to your inability to correctly spell out words. i meen i’m refurrin 2 da wurds u spelled lyk dis yo.

THE FIGHT TO SURVIVE!

…kumite.

The second post is right on the money, right next to the strategy of course.

There are a lot of games that are comparable to Chess and saying that the comparison is an insult to Chess? Please take your head out of your ass. Eating a huge combo at the start of a match almost means certain death for you and the only real difference isn’t even the games being real-time or turn-based, it’s that Fighting games don’t end in 1 round, but even then you can just look at the rounds as phases in Chess of Early, Mid and Endgame.

Both games match intelligence, experience and execution between 2 players to see who is the better player of the match. You might not need twitch execution in Chess, but following through in the right order for an attack is comparable to properly executing a combo.

But on topic, as with a lot of people, the competition in fighters is what really compels me to play. Liking a game or not, matching wits with someone with different skills, strengths and weaknesses is what’s fun and that can translate between most games. Presenting a plethora of situations to an opponent and seeing how they react to it and vice versa, as well as seeing how their style of play says a lot about the person as well and in the end I find playing a fighting game with someone tells me more about them in that span of 2-3 minutes than I probably could if I spent 20-30 minutes talking to them.

ok now im on a computer, i was on the internet via PSP and it only gives me a limited amount of typing space and with a quote hogging up alot of my text flexiability i have to keep it short and simple. Any ways like i was saying it depends on the game and its mechanics, and i thought this thread was about why you liked fighting games not a thread where you flame people on there “Spelling ability” :wtf:
