You people do realize that all of the most popular fighting games in the USA are unbalanced in comparison to a lot of unpopular fighting games?
#1 SSBM (fox, falco, marth and maybe a peach, IC, or shiek here and there) #2 3S (Yun, Chun, Ken and maybe a makoto, urien, and yang here and there) #3 MvC2 (Sent, Mag, Storm, Cable with the only low tiers seen as assists exclusively) #4 Tekken 5 DR (Last time I checked Mishimas, then again 90% of the tekken community says the game is random as hell… kind of like parry complaints)
At this point it shifts over to CvS2 and GG which are pretty balanced from what I can see (unless all this bitching about Accent Core insanity is true, but I think it’s just bitching). Then as far as EVO games are concerned, ST gets the old folks but not many people get into it cause of the old factor, which sucks cause the game is real cool. And then VF, as much as I love the game, America has this thing about VF which I still don’t get, and Sega hates us so yeah that too.
So from what I can see, Americans love games with 3-4 dominating characters that will always make it into placings if not take the all the placings. Americans dislike games where you have 5-6 technically top characters but character results can be all over the place due to the system balancing and every character given fair tools to win with.
Now I’m not saying SSBM, 3S, and Marvel are retarded unbalanced and Americans are retarded cause we like stupid unbalanced games. I play SSBM and 3S and I think they are really fun and definately deep. But seriously, it seems that people only complain about balance online cause tournament numbers don’t lie. I would love for everytime a person bitches about imbalance of said popular game that they would just play VF and stop bugging people who are enjoying their game, that way we’d all be happy (especially me! lol)
This argument was made in another thread. It’s not lucky guessing. In high level Japanese play for instance, the probability they will parry is actually quite high. If it was just random guessing, they obviously wouldn’t be able to do it so well. The reason they do it so well is a combination of great reaction speed, option selecting, and educated guessing (which is different from “lucky 50/50” guessing). Your post (and many similar posts) seem to be taking away the greatness of the best players in 3S by reducing it to an oversimplified 50/50 guessing game.
WRONG.DR is by FAR the most balanced Tekken ever made.Mishimas are top-tier yes, but over 70% of the cast can win if you know what you’re doing.and ‘random’ gets thrown around alot by people who don’t understand wtf is going on, when the ‘random’ player was just doing what he should have been doing; making his mix-up not perceivable.
Yeah it is balanced compared to the 3 games I listed before it, that’s also probably why there are less people and less activity for the game then there was a long time ago, but that may be just my observation. It seems TZ is alot less active then it was when T5 first came out.
And 70% is still less than the other games listed behind it. CvS2 can see the entire character select screen playable except for Kyosuke. GGS (cause I know nothing so far about AC) had every one playable except Robo Ky. ST everyone is playable, and VF everyone is playable.
See the pattern?
NONE of these games suck, they are all awesome or they wouldn’t even be at EVO. But it seems to me balance doesn’t matter as much as people on forums seem to make it. People will play what is fun and deep.
Sorry if I think the opinion of someone who’s actually played the game competitively counts more than someone who analyzes match vids in between spanking it to loli.
He’s a good SF player no doubt, but …You don’t have to play 3S competitively to see that “lucky 50/50 parry guessing” is a huge oversimplification. Stop trying to argue with me just for the sake of it, I didn’t even attack Watson in any way.
3S has a lot more guessing than many other games. Maybe if you’re someone who’s only played 3S, but at the heart of the “mixup” or “mind games” as people call them in 3S is a guessing game.
Which isn’t to say that the game is completely random or doesn’t require skill, but the old wakeup game (throw vs attack vs block) is all over 3S, even if some players can consistently win.
edit: Umm, you can have a situation that is 50/50 and do a lucky guess for big damage.
well you can have these situations in pretty much any game. Anyway, the mixups may be random, but the claim was initially about the parry being a random 50/50 guess. Some people can obviously just randomly parry, but the great success of the best players would show that it’s something more than just a random guess. 50/50 lucky guessing implies no anticipation, no reaction, just a flip of a coin. You might as well play blindfolded during those situations then, it supposedly won’t make a difference.
Every game is balanced if you simply disregard evidence to the contrary.
Was there money on the line?
No it can’t.
Anyway, Watson said it best. Play 3S for the comp. Even if A3 is a better game (I’m not saying it is or isn’t), it doesn’t have a scene. 3S does. I’d rather play a suboptimal game against lots of opponents than the greatest game on Earth against like 3 people and the CPU.
Watson covered it, and we need to add that you can play 3s on Dreamcast, ps2, xbox1, 360, and arcade, and it’s been online for years.
People love games they can play, they love games with comp, and then they go watch the videos and tell their friends. It’s really that simple… All the balance and gameplay stuff comes later for those who care enough to get good.
well i guess to each his own because i definately don’t agree with watson. parry of course has 50/50 situations but even that becomes part of the mix up (i.e. empty jump-ins for example) but that’s why i think i love 3s more than any other fighting game. things turn around so fast. also imo it’s got the best animation and visuals than any other 2d fighter
You realize it’s often beneficial to make a “blind” gamble.
Right?
There is no “educated guessing” there’s “high payoff for little risk” and “my opponent is really predictable” and “option selecting” and then theres “desperation attempt”. There’s little option weighing in parrying, if you make an “educated guess” it’s generally “hey he can’t do shit to me if I try and parry”, guess how many characters can do shit to you if you fuck up a parry? Anyone above Twelve in tier ranking.
