Good to know that people need to make shit up in order to find things they don’t like about the game .
The game sounds Japanese? First I’ve heard of that.
There are no annoying screaming lolis, for one.
Exactly. The one character that could have an annoying, squeaky voice - Ms Fortune - has a completely normal, badass voice.
I think cosmetics is pretty huge for a lot of people even if you are or aren’t serious about the game. I consider myself kinda above the casual level. Casual hardcore? The looks matter. Like I don’t even want to play older games now because they are just tiny blops of pixels blown up on TV.
The art style in this game isn’t my cup of tea, but I can appreciate the good work they’ve put in. The characters are designed to a kind of short and stumpy look so it makes chest and butt appear more gratuitous.
I mean you can say that for a lot of games though. I think it’s just some people aren’t used to having an INITIAL (there will be men just give it some time) all female cast but it’s been a regular thing in other US and Japanese fighters for a while. There’s been legitimately competitive Japanese fighters designed around this and a few really indie troll US games designed around this. I’m glad a US developer has tried to take a more serious approach around such a concept.
At least there will be men in this game at some point rather than in most Japanese fighters with a similar theme for the roster where you are surely going to get nothing but girls period.
Like I said…people are just going to have different tastes for different things. It’s the same reason someone might not want to play Madden because they don’t like the concept of football being about a bunch of sweaty guys running into each other. The same reason someone might not want to play WWE Smackdown because it’s a bunch of sweaty men hugging and throwing each other around in tights. Ok sure…Skullgirls is themed around girls with ideal or overly ideal proportions fighting each other out. Well…it’s really more like some girls with ideal proportions fighting other girls that are disfigured or tiny bodied.
If anything the art style of Skullgirls will attract new people because if the game was just another fighter with typical serious looking fighters and character archetypes, people would probably take even less of a look. I like what Alex Ahad is doing because to me it’s like how Nintendo uses the Wii to gather out to people who aren’t already interested in the PS3 or Xbox (sorry for bringing up console war shit here but it was the best initial example I could come up with). It’s almost the exact same approach where Alex knows there’s a big demographic of people (if you don’t know how big this demographic is…find out how many people like My Little Pony) who are into things that are not quite macho despite being teenagers or young men. The macho thing is obviously played out for a lot of guys if they have no problem focusing on things with more feminine tones for entertainment.
Maybe macho character loving guy won’t pick up the game (until Panzerfaust and TJ Maximum releases), but that guy at the anime con who just hasn’t really been intrigued by any of the other fighting games that tend to put in cliche heroic anime characters will most likely get into the “cutely dark” world of Skullgirls. The macho/bishounen demographic has already been bought up with SFIV/MVC3/SFxT/KOF13/Tekken/Soul Calibur etc.
Long story short…this game is reaching out to attract the clearly BIG number of people that aren’t into visually/artistically what some guy who was 10 years old in 1991 would be into. Which I see nothing wrong with that considering that men especially have shown if anything less interest in such old art styles and storyline themes that purposely cater to the manly men that are boys demographic over the years. Capcom/SNK and other developers have already got the set of people that like what they like. Now let’s go the Nintendo route and reach out to what everybody else is missing and maybe pull in some of the manly men in the process if they like the gameplay enough.
tbh, i can understand when someone says that the art is not their cup of tea, but a lot of the reasons sounds more like insecurities to me than real reasons
its like if it doesnt have men in them many people would feel like they are some kind of pervert or something, wich its fucking sad tbh
remember, srk is a place were even phoenix wright is considered a loli style character, or poison for the matters
When did SRK become a site for casual players that care about aesthetics above all else?
The game may be good, but going with this art style and design may also be an extremely poor business decision.
I can’t stand watching this more than one minute, but I hope for the game I’m the minority here.
2009, the year where srk was nerfed to hell to be more casual friendly
SKULL GIRLS WTF? LMAO, HELL NO! lol… Porngirls. i’m alright, keep that trashy hentai porn game out of our community. Helllllllllllllllllllllllll Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
HELLLL NOOOOO.
If it ain’t namco or capcom with the exception of mortal kombat. don’t waste your time.

SC5, mature fighting game for mature players such as yourself, amirite?
Like I said…after My Little Pony has had such success (sorry to point it out specifically but it’s the biggest example), Skullgirls will probably help you realize that you are in more of a minority than you really know.
It was sometime around when companies that weren’t Capcom made games.
What is My Little Pony ? Another fighting game I did not heard about ?
Um…it’s 2 things really. Well let me first try to seriously take in the fact that you may actually not have any idea what MLP is…
Ok…well firstly it’s a hugely successful cartoon series on The Hub (cable/satellite tv channel) that emphasizes personified ponies getting into different adventures. The cast, like Skullgirls being centrally female but also having prominent male characters.
Ok…now yes you are right in that it’s also having its own fighting game being built around the characters/art.

This would sell like hotcakes on XBL/PSN even if it only had like 2 modes. I kid you not (especially if they got the voice actors from the show…instant sell). That’s how many people like this. Which sends in the potential for something that at least has human beings and not straight up female horses fighting each other.
I also kid you not that I have friends that are SO INTERESTED in this shit that they literally told me how hype they are about this shit. Then when I told them about Skullgirls they were like…“oh I’ll see when it comes out…looks ok to me I dunno yet”. Of course now he’s much more hype for the game but…I’ve been supporting Skullgirls for a while and this guy comes out of the blue talking to me about horse fighting game with the hype.
It’s that serious.
It matters to an extent. I wouldn’t say above all else.
This has been the case for a long time IMO. I don’t see more people scouring to play other fighters if it weren’t based on looks to some extent. Blazblue? Melty Blood? Ougen Musou? Arcana Heart? And whatever else games are out there I don’t know of.
Dont understand me wrong. I wish the developers the best luck. I like the idea to create a serious fighting game and the fact, that they work close with the community (they are answering questions in the forum by themselfe, couldnt say that about capcom lol).
And I respect the fact, that they sticked to their vision or dream of this game (containing the look and style of skullgirls).
This is all good and respectable.
But I think they should have had the casual gamer in mind in the first place.
When I have friends at home, who dont play fighting games serious and just want to play for fun and mashing around.
I will definately not pull out a game like blazblue (they would say like, lol anime, and so much noise and screaming, same like skullgirls in my opion (its not anime here, but perhaps “childish” comic, I dont know how to express it).
I would rather take a game like Street Fighter (either Sf2HDR, everybody know how to do hadouken or j.Hk into sweep lol) or SF4. Or perhaps even KOF, the style of the characters would appeal them much more, they have cool “clothes” and are not that “kidlike” animestyle. KOF too has those weird screams on some of the female cast, but there are a lot of female chars with more of a mature voice and a lot of “cool” or stylish male chars. (no homo).
But ofc we’ll see in the future how Skullgirl does. I for myself will try out the demo. But if they aren’t a lot of casual gamers and only highskilled tournament players, I leave them alone for themself, and a lot of beginners will think the same. Thats why it’s much important to attract new players, and the look and style dont help here im my opinion. But this has been discussed very often now.
Lol If you guys are THIS picky over a $15 fighting game I can’t even imagine the torture y’all put y’all friends through when your trying to decide what’s for lunch.
I’m sorry but hating a game based on artstyle is pretty fucking stupid IMO. But personally I’ve never been one to stop playing a game just because of how it looks, and I think Skullgirls looks real smooth and clean.
Let people buy what they want. I thinking wanking about the game or saying “You must buy this” hurts more than it helps in the end.
I’ve supported more than a few “losers” in the past. I’ve got cases full of Sega releases to prove it! LOL
But I never bugged people to support what I liked.
I mean, geez, some of you guys sound like otaku!
Besides, it’s not the only XBL/PSN fighter download being released this year… Girl Fight is coming out and at least 1-2 other downloadable fighting games, too.
SNK and Capcom, if they’re smart, will probably release more of their retro-fighters for download, too.
Why they haven’t done at least another Samurai Shodown (2 or 4 would be best) release or one of the more popular KOF releases is beyond me… SNK’s really dragging its feet on downloads.
There are already more of those retro-games on XBL to be sure but more on both services is a good thing, too…
(Besides it’s pathetic that the available Fatal Fury and Darkstalkers games on PSN are the WORST entries in those series…!)
Why, again, is this game supposed to revitalize fighters? It just seems like another semi-doujin all-girl animu fighter (no offense). None of the previous hundreds have made a difference. Why this one? Why not Melty Blood or some of the other doujin fighters srk raved about in the past?
