Well that’s the point I’m trying to bring up. Your friends are part of an ever decreasing majority with the way these new cartoons/IP’s are gaining speed with people that look exactly like your friends. Your friends may be all part of that hard manly men demographic but for every one of them, there’s at this point one for one on people of their age who would dig something like Skullgirls or MLP with the quickness.
This is most likely a much better question for MikeZ to answer…but I’m not sure if the goal of the game is to revitalize fighters. SFIV already took care of making sure Joe Shmoe actually cares about fighting games again. Thank you Ono.
The other part of your question I will assume has to do with the idea that well…as much as people hate to bring it up Mike Z did not make any of those games. Mike Z for some people on SRK is a widely respected tournament player who made combo videos and placed highly in tournaments for such manly men fighting games as MVC2 and Guilty Gear. He’s been known for using less than top tier characters and doing extremely well with them.
The fact that he’s been a poster on SRK for YEARS and has now championed the way for all of the theorists on SRK to be able to start making their OWN fighting games…hell yeah it’s gonna catch more steam than Melty Blood on these forums. It’s literally like everyone’s good friend is making the next fighting game and well…people are just gonna jump on that. It’s inevitable like Judgement Day.
The revitalization of fighting games is just some super idealistic shit that Ono already took care of. He already begged and pleaded Capcom like people are doing here with Skullgirls to give SF a chance. They blew him off multiple times like “eh you know fighting games are done Ono…nobody bought that Capcom Fighting Jam crap…come on son! come on!” Then of course he revitalizes fighting games to the casual mass of video game plaeyrs.
The best I think this game is trying to do is help tell other game companies that “hey you are fucking up on this shit you could try to fix it for once (after like 10 fucking years) while we make this new game that people will buy and really like for cheap”. I’m not even talking about in terms of gameplay…just like basic video game features and modes. Stuff that a CASUAL gamer will understand pretty much out the box. I think that’s about as far as it goes and that’s more than enough for Reverge Labs to make a profit on.
Yeah then that just gets into super picky stuff like why one person will like one person’s rap style but not anothers (even though they’ll still listen to both any way). At that point you might as well just give both a shot.
I don’t like the art style one bit, but I’ll support the game because I like the gameplay. Anyone who values graphics over gameplay should look into playing a different genre.
I don’t think it’s about revitalizing the genre, it’s more about supporting those who understand what the competitive community wants, and has shown that they can listen and use feedback very well. It’s about making a point to say that our opinions matter and do not intrude on casual enjoyment, and the only way to make that opinion heard is with our wallets.
Even though I’m buying Skullgirls, I’m against everything this topic stands for. Buying the game for some arbitrary reason is the worst thing you can do for yourself, and does a disservice to the FGC at large by being a dishonest reflection of actual interest.
Like any other game, you should support Skullgirls if and only if you like the game. I’m confident that many people will, because it’s really fun to play (in my experience).
The developers have worked hard on this so I hope it sells very well, but personally I’m not interested in it. You guys make some pretty strong arguments about innovative new mechanics for custom assists and combo limiters, but I don’t see Ryu in any of the screenshots and I’d lose friends if they found out I played as a girl in a video game. I need that $15 for SFxT outfits. I hope they fix the sound soon.
If one person is actively playing a fighting game he is enjoying on both gameplay and graphics, do you think he will switch over for something else if he can’t stand the aesthetics ?
It’s not like there are no good fighters available at the moment.
I’m just happy to see a developer raise the bar when it comes to asthetics and interface. It’s the first fighting game that could even be compared to 2008’s SSBB (for the Wii) in that department. We’ve been very vocal about getting controller config on the character select screen for a decade, Capcom says they don’t have the resources meanwhile nobody can figure out why pandora mode exists including the developers.
Yeah I’d much rather play a game where I can literally ask and suggest things to the developer for on SRK that I’m always on any way. No having to email or post on Capcom unity and hope they see something. You get a rational guy that posts on SRK as the developer of your game and if that’s not cool…I dunno what is. Tired of games that are missing this and that feature wise and balancing too hard here and not enough there. Better to have somebody that understands that shit out the gate and anything they may be missing you have much easier access to notify them of.
I’ve even seen MikeZ get more or less mad when somebody pitches an idea that the other people on the forum should have asked him a long time ago about. He’s really about thinking about everything and wanting to make sure everyone else is thinking about what he’s not thinking about. I can’t have anything but the utmost of respect for that shit.
Most of the issues I’ve been having with fighting games over the past 10 years are like near insta fixed with this game and that just has me gravitating to it pretty free.
Everybody cares a lot about aesthetics, its just not ‘cool’ to admit it, it’s the main subject you get people ‘fronting’ over. (“I don’t even see the art man, just the frames!”)
In a way, its the first thing a designer for a fighting game should worry about, you need to draw those eyeballs before you can even think about convincing people your gameplay is revolutionary.
The MLP comparison is interesting, MLP is designed for and marketed to young girls, and just has a sizable adult male following (Faust's PPG-borrowing characterizations and design helping that a lot I expect), SkG is designed for and marketed to teen/adult males. Not that that's bad or good, but the 2 things couldn't be more different in their goals and results.
That’s fine, but no one needs to switch over, people don’t have to just play 1 fighting game. It’s simply a matter of giving the game a chance and supporting ideas that should be in every fighting game. Even though I don’t love Capcom games, I enjoy them, but let’s be real. The things that the competitive community asks for, are very low on Capcom’s list of things to do. At the pace Capcom has been going, I have no faith in SF5, but hey I’m sure it’ll look great !
-What game have we played were SRK/Dustloop/Fanatiq/Justin Wong/etc are the ones who have influence on the game is development?
-When has there been a fighting game that sparks interest in America, but ALSO the demographic who play Japanese fighters.
Japan dominates the fighting game genre, and America has never made a fighter that attracts to this demographic. Mortal Kombat fails to do this because it attract America’s taste in video games. Most fighting game fans who don’t like Mortal Kombat play Japanese fighting games. You can talk about how Skullgirl looks like a doujin, but when America made anything like Melty Blood?
I’m not saying Skullgirl is the best thing since slice bread, but I can’t see how people don’t think this game isn’t special in the genre.
Got to play and sit down with the game for a while, lot of fun but wish there was more characters for a 3v3 it feels a little weird but I’m sure with more time it will feel intuitive
You should support this game because so far it looks way better than MvC3. I mean there seems very little way in which this game could be worse than MvC3. That’s more than enough for me to buy it.
If the game has something else he likes that he didn’t like about the other fighter, it’s very much possible. Especially if he has other offline or online friends that are interested.
A game’s aesthetics can influence a player’s interest even among hardcore fans. Take a look at Vanguard Princess. It’s a very solid game with a foostie-heavy style reminiscent of older Street Fighter games with assists but few people play it due to the game laying the Ecchi on thick. Arcana Heart has similar problems. For every AH discussion I’ve seen there’s always that one guy who hates because how looks at the game makes him feel like a pedo or whatever.
Well that’s kind of the point really. When almost none of the other fighters available in the US have nothing that appeals to that demographic that doesn’t really jump for joy at huge macho character designs…that’s where Skullgirls can come in.
Long story short…if teen and adult males can get into Super Smash Bros (and I personally can’t stand Nintendo characters or their designs)…they can get into this too.
