Not really. I’ve seen this movie before with 3s.
First 3s Evo. Lots of variety. the better player wins out causing more interest in the game because of its untapped potential.
2nd 3s Evo. Half the turnout are ppl playing the character that one the year before (Ken) Yun player wins it.
3rd 3s Evo. Everyone says fuck it and shows up with top 5 or bust top 8 Ken’s Yun’s Chun’s Makoto Mike.
4th 3s Evo or 'Wow these mofo’s are about that fucking paper". Top 8 Chun, Chun, Chun, Chun, Akuma, Ken, Yun.
Games with clearly defined S tier characters are doomed to follow this timeline as long as there is money involved. With 5 grand on the line why wouldn’t you give your self the best chance to win? As good as the Turtles were in Super, they still had a lot of 5-5 matchups.
yeah, because its boring to watch a player who could beat you with any character in the game, give himself a better chance in his eyes at winning against other players who could beat you no matter who they picked
Because of so many changes to the game that made little to no sense. Removing characters and failing to actually improve balance. Buffing character who were already strong and nerfing characters who were already weak. ST was already a great game with good character variety. It didn’t need to be changed. This is why I support 3s OE with no balance changes. I hate 3s as an SF game, but I wouldn’t try to rebalance it. (even though it may need a rebalance more than ST)
New Sagat was never top tier, and if you are referring to O. Sagat he was never the weakest top tier.
Rog def beat him down the hardest. He had no issues with shots and his footsies of course were much stronger. Once he got in things get really hairy really fast. Claw is debatable. But even then Rog and Sim are still better then him as chars and gat got bashed pretty hard with the nerf hammer which I don’t get. It’s like Sirlin just said fuck it tiger shots are ghey so fuck this guy. For the record I do think the tiers are more compressed in this game and Sirlin did a damn good job fixing up retarded ass glitches and making moves useful that had no use at all before as well as fixing the supers that didn’t function correctly.
Try it out and see how that match changes. When I got top 16 in HDR @Evo 2k9 I did by beating a few Rog’s.(with assy new Gat) I beat them by understanding how to zone him. Standard Sagat zoning doesn’t work on Rog due to his HB. Fast shots only change that.
Jump MP. Forward, Backward, neutral. All good against Vega wall dives and jumps.
How so? Gat has better matchups overall.
Actually New Gat got buffed, not nerfed. O. Gat was just removed with the rest of the original characters.
Most matchup charts I have come across, even ones that have Gat losing to the other top tiers, have Gat as higher overall in matchup points due to how Gat destroys so much more of the cast.
And obviously #1 overall was Akuma. I believe all his matchup were 9/1.
I know the game has been out for a while in arcades, but I say give the console version at least a year before we start talking about regressing back to Super. Yeah, some things in AE are a little rough right now, but let’s give the game time to breathe, and see what people come up with. I’m not rejecting the OP’s suggestion out of hand, but I am saying that it is being made way too early.
I’d say banning Yun Yang for future tournament would be a better solution. I mean if you can ban Akuma from ST / HDR tournaments then I can’t see why not.
IMO these 2 characters are NOT designed for competitive game play. The reason they get designed this way is solely because Capcom wants to sell more copy of SF33 and SFxT, it’s a way of for profit company marketing.
I seriously think this is a question we should ask ourselves down the line if things get out of hand with them. What’s the landscape of the game look like without those two involved? Serious question here.
Then how do you define “game breaking”? For me, being “exceptional” is already pretty much broken in a competitive scene.
There’s nothing wrong being “powerful” or “cheap”, but only making certain characters so standout while the others have to work their ass through the whole match is plain unfair.
