Why not make Super the tournament Standard?

If it happens in every fighting game and will happen forever until the end of all fighting games, then what is the point in arguing about it in the first place?

And I don’t think it did happen in Super. Who was top tier in Super? Guile, Honda, Chun, and Bison? How many Guiles have majors in Super? How many Hondas? What about Vanilla?

Again, people overreact to tiers.

Because I want people to think. Up until now, we’ve dealt with BS simply because we didn’t have a choice. Now we do. Things have changed.

Is it the time to be making this kind of decision? No, absolutely not. And maybe time will pass and things will settle down and AE will be completely fine. But if it’s not - if we take a step back and see that Super was overall the better game - then what compelling reason do we have to keep playing AE when we could easily go back to Super? So if that time comes, rather than everyone just throwing up their hands and saying “Oh well”, maybe they can think “Oh yeah, we do have this option…” That’s all I want to do right now.

Just a thought, no disrespect intended (and still give you mad props for your work on those Super dev blogs), but if things are as you say, this thread is probably a bit premature. Perhaps we should’ve let AE marinate in a few majors before we started this discussion.

Well he lives in Japan where AE has been released for 6 months and the Japanese SF4 scene is basically flooded with Yuns & Yangs, so his suggestions are valid from his point of view. But if your point is “hey SRK is a NA based forum where the majority only care about the United States of A” I guess that’s valid as well …

YO it’s Hong kong figher 4 SON !! …beat em , join em …or STFU!!! …lol …

some people discuss Street fighter like it’s a sport…:/…

I think AE is fantastic, just as I do Super.

Super was known for being boring, and Justin Wong said he disliked Super because of this, but it was very balanced.

AE, in my opinion, awards the aggressor who emphasis on pressuring his opponent with solid execution. Even in Super, were you really seeing Dan/Hakan/T. Hawk often in tournaments? Good players aren’t going to go with bad characters and bad characters have been here since SF4. Bad as in very non-viable options against most of the cast.

I really think to appreciate AE, you have to look at it from a different angle.

Yun/Yang/Fei Long/Chun-Li/Sagat/Zangief/Ken/Akuma/Balrog/Ryu/Bison seem to be the best picks and that isn’t bad variety in itself. More importantly, Mike Ross played exceptionally well at CEO with E. Honda and lost to Arturo at the end who was using Dhalsim (and Mike still almost won, despite Honda’s nerfs). If that doesn’t speak about AE rewarding the aggressor, skill, and dedication, nothing really will.

I’m not anybody special, these are just things I observed and my thoughts. If you got hate for it, shove it. lol

I wouldn’t say AE rewards aggressive play. It seems to reward mainly thoughtful and measured offense. I’ve been blowing up Yuns and Yangs left and right who just try to play silly and crazy agressive style. AE is definitely not about button spamming. AE is putting more scrubs on blast than Super did. I had a friend who played Balrog, and although I beat him often I would struggle with him in Vanilla and Super. But his play style doesn’t work as well in AE, and now he has to focus on his ground game which was lackluster. I personally think footsies and spacing is more solid in this game than they were in Super. Even if you use the twins you can’t do anything for free. I like this. And I’m a Guile player, a turtle Guile at that. But I think a solid defense in this game is better than hyper agressive play. Even rushers need to know how to defend themselves.

AE is still trash. lol at u gusy citing american tourney results as proof we still dont have any exp in the game yet.

balance is overrated

this is coming from someone who puts up with phoenix

You’re just mad because your turtle style sim got nerf. Man up and play a different character if your sims not working out.

switch to a more balanced game MvC3

lmao

So much salt and stupidity in this thread. The beauty of this game is that you can change the fucking balance to fit your preference. Don’t like AE? That’s fine, switch back to Super. Don’t like Super? That’s fine, stick with AE. Honestly the people that complain about AE balance are just pissed that they have to get off their duff and work hard to make themselves solid again. AE will be the tournament standard because it is the most recent game and tourneys are also used as a promotional tool. Seriously, why go backwards in a professional tournament setting instead of pushing forward and challenging yourself? And it will be that way until a new SF comes to be. Also the people that complain the twins are broken are just as misinformed and the people that think that just because they are top tier they can pick them up and get easy wins with zero effort. They’re indeed stupid, but they’re also beatable. For god’s sake I play Cammy, who got metaphorically castrated due to AE balance changes and I’m not complaining.

I think its best if this thread stays open. If its locked someone will only make a similar thread and it will carry on later. As long as people don’t start flaming each other too much we can discuss which SSF4 as tournament standard is better.

Not the best example

Newer is not always better. In the past when tournaments were arcade based, we had to play what we were given because we didn’t have a choice. Now we do.

And once Capcom has our money I doubt they care too much about what we do with the game. The game itself includes the option to toggle between the versions so it seems even Capcom wanted to give us the option should we so choose to utilize it.

Would running both a super version of tournaments and an AE version be too far fetched?

I second the sentiment that AE needs time. Having a console version changes everything.
And personally? AE is fine to me.

Not really. EVO and SBO before AE, for example. I think it gets more complicated now that we have a universal version, though.

I never said that newer was better. That is always opinion based. But I’m saying that since it’s the most recent game in the series what is the point of going backward in running Super when AE is finally available to everyone. The game hasn’t even been out on consoles a month yet. I understand you said you’ve been playing it for like half a year or so. But now that everyone has access to it I’d give consoles about 6 months to a year to digest the game. If people want to go back to playing Super at tournaments so badly they can always set up a side tourney or a pool with Super’s game balance. It may not be main monitor action but at least it’s something.

Super is not really any more balanced and you lose 4 playables.
Your welcome to try but good luck selling people on going back to second impact from third strike,if you take my meaning.
