Why most US fighting gamers dont want to play new 2D fighters?

I think at the arcade where I play at, chinatown fair. I play all the fighting games there. Its not that no one plays them, its just that we have no access to them and there is no tourneys for them. NYC has Rumble fish 2 but if Virginia doesnt have access to rumble fish 2. Then VA would have to travel all the way to NYC to play this game. I dont think its worth it at alll.

thats what im trying to say also, look at most new FG these days,2 to 3 button layout,

1button you do a whole 10 hit combo,by mashing repeatly, one button supers, grab button  ,when i was a 15yrs when marvel came out, starting off as a scrub, this guy that bein playing street fighter 1 to killer instint, way back,he said they make new games,to make it easier for you young boys,i will always remember that, and years reaching a high level of 3s,cvs2,marvel,ggxx and such,i play about everything i see comp on even t5,ill love to see a new game to come across, but looking at these new games, its just sinceless trying to make a kid game into a serious game.

I respect your opinion … thx for the feedback btw.

Yes, there are indeed a whole community in the US based around capcom fanboys … but they are not all of them. I remember when people used to say ( 2-3 years ago ) that they didnt like playing snk games coz of their graphics. Now look, they all got better … still they dont play them.

No offense to Valle or any of the REAL OG players(as in the old school top rankers). But, no one here has a duty to follow the top players. Not all of the top players play every single game. Hell, not even us regular Joes(who are good as well in the games we play) can play every fighter at once.

The new fighters are fine and all. But, they aren’t exactly the greatest when it comes to competitive play. HnK was massively broken. GGXX #Reload was an Eddie fest. And the SNK scene in America isn’t that big.

Plus, like Valle mentioned, the arcade scene in America is dead. There are probably one or two arcades in the ENTIRE country that have the better comp. I know of CF over here in NYC and that’s a long ways off for me. A 45 minute train ride for random competition(because not everyday you get good comp) is not justifiable. I’d rather get a few of my friends and get together at someones crib and just have our own tourney.

Console fighters are here to stay. You can’t rely on the top players to use their own hardearned money to start a scene just because you want competition. Granted, you MIGHT get that scene. BUT, you’re still missing the big picture here: AMERICA IS ABOUT 3,000 MILES WIDE!!! We can’t fly all the time for a tournament because that’s just crazy. We are not as close to each other as the players in Japan are. In Japan you take a train and just about every stop you get off there is an arcade there.

Well, you said that the top players would be afraid of losing their titles in a new game. And even THAT is the most retarded possibility you put in your first post. No one here can say that they’ll lose their touch in a new fighter because once you’ve played Street Fighter 2 you have gained all the basic knowledge to play any other fighter. It’s just a matter of adapting to the game’s particular engine and thus working from there.

And since YOU(reconchatumare) want people to play new games, why don’t YOU start a scene for your games? You can’t rely on the top players to make something the “in” thing in the SF community.

Thats awesome.

The problem is availability. Here in Socal I only know that there was this SHGL arcade that closed down years ago, but the rest are operative still. Bad news that they dont have new fresh 2d fighters in their arcade line up though.

So in an hypothetic world, if theres a group of people, willing to spend some money themselves in order to do something about this community percentage that wants to play new games, but cant do it coz of availability … if they go and talk with some arcade owners, telling them that they will give the new games for free or at least get a fair agreement with them, in order to have them in their arcades … would that make at least a small diference ?

For example, If I had the money and resources, and I go to FFA and talk to the bitter owner in an educated manner, that Im willing to give him a new game, pay some or most of the amount money required to have it on display, or maybe “rent” a cabinet … maybe better, what about having the game on free play for a period of time ( say a week ) ? Would that attract crowds ? While they are waiting for their turn at 3S or CVS2, they can spend some time playing for free the new game.

Well Said :wonder:

GG Slash isn’t a BS game.

Neither is NGBC and KOF XI.

So what’s the real problem?
Too many closed minded players who don’t WANT to like the new stuff.

And what’s the hell’s the problem with a console?
With the amount of quarters you spend at the arcade during the year, it should be about the same as buying as PS2 and some games.

Just because you practice 3S for 5 hours in your living room in front of your TV doesn’t make you any different then spending 5 hours playing at the arcade as long as you play good competition.

Welcome to the year 2006. There are other new 2-D fighters now besides SVC and CFE. Please feel free to join us in the present reality.

Capcom Fanboy right here. Capcom has great gameplay, bottomline. I’ve played Capcom games since the beginning (Final fight, D&D, SF2 etc…) and they’re just so much fun. In my opinion Capcom made SNK characters worthwhile in CVS2, better than they could ever be in any SNK game, the reason is phenomenal gameplay.

Capcom’s Gameplay > Everything

You are talking about having tournaments ( big tournaments like EVO, TS, etc ) not about small ones made mostly for an specific community area. I think you already took one step above. Here Im trying to get POVs of people about what do they think about new fighting games, and the process they create in starting a community. The first step is to make/gather a community of players for a certain game, then you can talk about going to national far-away state tourneys. First things first, so dont get ahead too much.

I disagree with that, but thats your opinion and I respect that.

I already stated the reasons why I cant do something at the moment, maybe you miss them. At least Im interested in this topic. Thats why I created this thread, to get different povs and ideas … have a knowledgable base.

It’s the lack of a fresh, quality game.

I took a trip into London (uk) to check out the arcades. Spent 45 mins playing CvS2… not one person turned up to play against. Fortunately Goodge Street arcade was actually quite lively and I managed to have a few good games of Alpha 3 and 3rd Strike.

But Gary (who I was playing A3 with, serious props to his Guy) said it best when he said that, at the age Alpha 3 is, it should be about 10p a credit. I mean look at Crouch Cancelling. Someone at Capcom should look at that and think “this shit cannot stand! People, we need to work on a new project, they’ve broken the last one”

Look at what happened between CvS2 and CFE. CvS2 JUST about got away with it. Yes, Capcom re-used all the old sprites (cough wheezeMorriganhack COUGHBLOOD), and yes we kinda broke it with roll cancelling but the whole thing just about manages to hold together into a great game.

CFE? Well, they re-reused sprites, and that says it all…

In short: I believe it is Capcom’s duty to provide us with another huge title. They’ve seen the buzz around Evo and actually got involved. And I know that if a new Street Fighter of merit came out I’d be all over that like a rash. I’ve pushed my game up a notch on Alpha 3, and I’m working hard on CvS2, I’m ready for the new stuff, the UK is ready… what we need is for Capcom to contact some of the top Japanese and American players, get them on board as advisers and JUST DO IT!

And to all those who say “Capcom don’t owe us a damn thing, they are just a company out there trying to make a living” i say a POX on you! If the concept of Honour is alive anywhere, surely it should be in Japan, surely it is understood there. And when there is so much love for a type of game as there is for the one-on-one 2D fighter, it is capcom’s duty to continue the legacy.

… although hey, I still think more people should be out playing CvS2, A3 and 3rd Strike. Damn the people for not having better taste, maybe Capcom would be more inclined to give us something new if there were more popular interest… but my point above is that that shouldnt be the deciding factor.

Anyways I’ve had to get this off my chest. Gary told me there hasnt been a ranking battle event in the uk for years now… it makes me sad. I hate walking into arcades and just seeing steering wheels and guns… something’s gone wrong…

so true,i find myself 98% of the time adapting against players that actully plays the game in the first match and winning, but also goes for marvel also,if you learn marvel you can pick up games in the first match,if you can block a damn tri jump, moving constanlly building meter, watching for assist, all types of shit thats goes on in marvel high level of gameplay, picking up another game is too easy.

Just to name a few…Capcom’s versions of Benimaru, Yuri, Ryo, King, Kim and Kyo suck total fucking ass compared most of their KOF incarnations.
And all of the SNK characters were toned down in order to fit within CvS’s battle system.

There really isn’t any point in starting a community with a new game when you already know that 80% of the crowd will not get into it because the skill level will still be different. You have to realize. Me, you, Valle and EVERYONE here on SRK are a cut above the rest. We have knowledge of old school fighters. We already know the do’s and don’ts of the game. We know how to pick at a game and take the good from the bad. A newbie will refuse to pick up a fighter because of what they see in us.

In my neighborhood me and a few other friends were great at all the fighters that came out. But, that’s because we adapted quickly enough and were already at a higher level than most of the people that were playing. We knew infinites, resets, setups and the whole nine. People refused to play because of us. That’s why games like DOA and Smash Brothers(although it’s not really a fighter) are successful amongst the newbie crowd. They are user-friendly games.

KOF already has an established base of players in America. Although, it’s not many it’s still established and they will learn the next KOF as quickly as they learned the last. Where does it leave the newbie? Out in the dust.

Believe me, I’ve tried what you’ve tried. Years ago when there were arcades and it didn’t work. Everyone got scared off because we were better. If anything, Tekken is the best game(with a good userbase) to get the newbies attracted to.

^randal speaks the real

Only before you learn the combos/throws/whichever move a character uses to win and start wave dashing and using Sheik’s 6A or Marth’s 2A to just slap them off all the damn time. Then they start the bitching.

Speak for yourself…

Quit with the negativity and suck it up, man. Keep playing and you’ll get somewhere. Hell, I doubt myself most of the time when I play and I still keep playing. I’m not the GREATEST of the great. But I can hold my own. Everyone here can.

No, I’m quite sucky. Don’t have the money or time to transport myself to the closest other SRKer that comes to mind who is like 2 hours away. I have my brother and sister who quit as soon as I learn how to do something (they stopped playing 3S when I learned some Ken combos and parrying. Stopped GG when I learned the good Sol combos. Stopped playing KOF once I started doing the Kyo qcf+HK, hcb+LK combos. Stopped playing Smash once I started just plain raping them. Stopped playing DOA when I just started raping them. Etc, etc.). And I can’t really fall back onto Xbox Live to become particularly great at any of them except maybe DOA if I started bugging the upper-tier players to start teaching me since the lag is minimal in that.

Bottom line: Hours and hours in training/practice/sparring can’t really teach you all THAT much.

changed, yes. toned down no (with the exception of king). It’s just a different system.

Definitely toned down, why?

You don’t see many top players picking them as their permanent team, and their animations sucks, they all look like they are all fatigue!!

Us long time SNK players know how badly characters were butchered in CvS!

Too bad Buktooth destroys that line of thought. He’s only got one Capcom character in his team ;p.
