Where there’s an obvious overpowered boss character with no surefire plan or strategy to defeat her, why not ban her?
She is dangerous in the hands of literally anyone. When she finally is dark phoneix, the match changes up drastically to the point where it is near hopeless and require luck (NOT SKILL) to defeat her. People fear that character so much, they try not to kill Phoneix to bring out BOSS-Phoneix. In a fighting game, when have you ever heard it would be a better idea to not kill the opposing character?
So why NOT ban her?
P.S:
This is not a troll post or a flame-bait. I am honestly asking players this question.
Yes, there is. It’s called snapback. Kill Phoenix before she gets to level 5. If she reaches level 5 and still has teammates, continue to snap her in anyway. It’s better to try and deal with Dark Phoenix when she only has X-Factor level 1 or 2 over level 3. Two is still bad, but it’s doable.
Wait out X-Factor at full screen and then hit her with a beam super for glorious chip kill
Hit her with a beam super when she’s doing ball spam for glorious high-durability projectile kill
Snap her in when she’s normal Phoenix and has sub-5 meter and just rip her face off
Hit her with LITERALLY ANYTHING
There are others, this is by no means comprehensive.
Seeing as she has about half the health of the weakest character in the game, I don’t see why they would ban her. It’s true her damage output is ridiculous, but if she’s touched, she’ll die.
Other than the snapping in these ways to kill phoenix aren’t very good. You can spit out a million ways to kill Phoenix, but it does not mean they are effective. Things like “hit her with a random super”, and “just snap her in and kill her” sound great but with Phoenixs tools they are very diffiult to pull off. Sitting full screen while she has Xfacter? She has (almost unreactable) teleports with ways to cover them(IE homing fireballs). Meter gaining is very easy to do in this game. I think you gain like 60% of the meter your opponent gains while your being hit. You have a very small window to pull these things off.
But for real. There is no point in even considering banning Phoenix now (whether you want her to be or not). You have a new game with new mechanics, tweaks and characters coming out before the end of this year. That will (Most likley) be the standard game that is played at tournaments so you won’t have to worry about vanilla Phoenix anymore.
I don’t think Pheonix needs to be banned, we are getting a new version of MvC3 soon and she is getting a well deserved nerf. More so the new system is gonna play a major role in how people play thanks to the new Team Aerial Exchange system which puts a more skill-based approach to how you do team tags. You can tag your allies in a air combo to decrease your opponents meter or increase yours minus damage which I think will be a great help when fighting Pheonix or even playing as Pheonix.
X-Factor is getting more normalized too, so she won’t be able to reap the benifits of X-Factors speed and damage like in the current version. Pheonix players will need to be very careful how they play this time.
We are getting a new version because there is an obvious balance issue, banning her is pointless because this game will be obsolete soon and attention to her design is being revisited. I’d relax and wait for November.
Why? Maybe because quite a few people actually beat them with skill in the Top 8. It is difficult, but that is why you don’t let Dark Pheonix happen at all.
You know, back then, players rather than trying to just get everything they dislike banned, removed, or patched out, they would attempt to cleverly or gradually find ways around the problems.
Imagine if Megaman 2 on the NES was released today (hypothetically). “OMG DISAPPEARING BLOCKS, HORRIBLE GAME DESIGN, CAPCOM NEEDS TO PATCH THIS BS.” True reward is finding a way out of these problems.
Granted, Phoenix is a stupid character by gameplay design, she is far from invincible. I hate dealing with her, and most people do to, but to beat the bitch is very… VERY satisfying. Killing her with a mix-up upon snapback, or instagibbing her with a dark phoenix kill set-up (with She-Hulk, Spencer, or Spiderman) feels very good. If practice your set-ups to kill her and to defend against her and you see the results of your efforts, you’ll begin to understand why she does not need to be banned.
Capcom tried to do something different in a fighting games to keep things fresh among the character play styles. If you weren’t sure if you were playing a completely beta version of MVC3 that happened to get a distributed release…Vanilla Phoenix is a reminder of that.
Of course since it was a completely new “glass cannon” style concept it didn’t work perfectly and she completely controls the strategies of high level play. Either way we got a new game with new rules and attributes coming so we’ll see.
