Why i think the Darkstalkers games need a next gen game

DS violence goes along with the game’s premise on horror. It’s artistic and gives the series more Halloween flair.

MK violence looks like it’s done by a bunch of 8-year-olds. It tries so hard to be gory its hilarious in a bad way.

I’m 50/50 on a new Darkstalkers doing well. On one hand Vampire Savior does have a respectable sized passionate community. And alot of people like the characters. On the other hand Darkstalkers has never sold that well outside of Japan. And SF4 is still going strong.
Assuming Capcom doesn’t get bought out. I’d say when Street Fighter 4 begins to die down. Then Capcom could release a new Darkstalkers. But as of now there’s just too much competition for an obscure series like Darkstalkers to stand out and catch consumer’s eyes

One thing to keep in mind is that DS2/Night Warriors/Hunter/whatever you want to call it was actually the most successful game in the series (and Capcom knows this, they frequently refer to it in particular in merchandising and such), so if a fourth game were to ever happen it might end up more like it than Savior.

Also yeah, the thing about Arc Systems staff having formerly worked on Darkstalkers is a myth. I have yet to come across any documentation of such.

Wow really? I never would’ve guessed seeing as how I see most playing savior. I prefer Savior, but I enjoy Night Warriors/ Vampire Hunter as well so I wouldn’t mind a new Darkstalkers playing like Hunter. The thing is though people would compare it to SF and it’d be the whole ( SFT halloween edition/ SF with monsters ) jokes all over again. I heard that’s a big reason why most didn’t like the series. Capcom will have to add more to the mechanics to seperate it from SF.

The Arc staff worked in The Last Blade, not Darkstalkers.

Savior did a better job of keeping a devoted playerbase over the long term than Hunter did (although Hunter is seeing a small upswing lately thanks to DSR), but back when the series was new and in its heyday Hunter was apparently the one that got the most play and sales.

Ah ok. Hey by the way I love the drawings you post on the Darkstalkers unity off topic thread. Especially the one with Felicia with the "Will fight for a new game sign*. Would it be cool to use it as my profile pic?

Thanks, glad you enjoy them. And sure, feel free to use any of my drawings however you’d like.

For those who don’t browse the Capcom-Unity Darkstalkers forum, here’s the drawing in question.

Hey sorry if this is a little off topic, but what do you guys think of the PS1 version of Darkstalkers 3? Is it worth getting since I dont have a ps3 or 360 and cant get any of the collection releases outside of it?

We need a new Darkstalkers so we can have a new game to talk shit about.

I heard the Sega Saturn port is the best one, then Darkstalkers Ressurections. You could get the PS1 port. But I highly recomend buying a PS2 which should be cheap now and get the Darkstalkers collection.

As a general rule the PS1 ports of contemporary Capcom fighters are the worst since the PS1 just couldn’t handle lots of sprite animation (supposedly the PS1 port of Darkstalkers 1, the first attempt at porting a CPS2 game to the PS1, was a very long and difficult process which explains why Darkstalkers 2 ended up going to the Saturn instead and was actually released shortly before the PS1 port of DS1.)

As it currently stands, Darkstalkers Resurrection is the most accurate port of arcade DS2 and DS3. The PS2 “Darkstalkers Collection” has a few small inaccuracies that were fixed in Resurrection, but it is by far the most fully-featured port, featuring 99.9% arcade-perfect ports of all 5 original arcade releases plus bonus modes that fill out the rosters of DS3 and its variants. The Dreamcast and PSP versions are an oddity in that they try to combine all the games in the series into one like Hyper SF2, but they don’t accurately represent the original games.

The Saturn ports of DS2 and DS3 were both great ports for their time, but have since been one-upped by the PS2 Collection and Resurrection.

Yeah the PS2 collection is japan only so i cant play it  and I dont have a Saturn so i cant play that. Ill just stick to emulation for it. I told my friend last night that the Resurrection set was worth getting. If I see it for $20 or $25 Ill grab it for later when I eventually get a now last gen system.

It really erks me that Capcom wouldnt release the PS2 set in america, but gave us the PSP version

And also I can get the Saturn version of Night Warriors to work fantastic on SSF, and the PS1 version of VS works great too, but getting the actual game was just a way to practice on tv and at a friends. The Dreamcast version of the collection set doesnt work on NullDC, nor does the PSP version on PPSSPP. And the PS2 collectio nruns HORRENDOUSLY SLOW on pcsx2, but I need to get a quadcore anyway soon. Also I have winkawaks recognizing both NW and VS, but FBA doesnt. Practicing on arcade emulators is kind of annoying though, but Ill see if I can get an infinite time infinite health cheat for VS on winkawaks so itll be a barebones training mode.

Nice art felineki. Felicia is definitely the greatest cat girl ever in a fighting game. A nun, runs an orphanage, a singer who dreams of stardom. She’s very well designed gameplay wise, and has a look that is iconic. Her look is also much more like a true hybrid of cat and human than others.

@Orocidemon If you ask me. Darkstalkers Ressurection should’ve just been the damn PS2 collection with on-line play.

Felicia’s look makes her one of the most polarizing characters not just in fighting games but in gaming period. People either love her or despise her. Rarely do I come across someone whos opinion of her is grey. But as outrageous as her design is, it’s actually good. A perfect blend between cat and human. They could’ve made her appearance a lil more modest to fit her being a nun, but it’s still good. Speaking of which her nun outfit should’ve been an alternate skin in Darkstalkers or UMVC3. Would’ve been cool to see a nun throwing down lol.

Don’t forget she didn’t become a nun until darkstalkers 3, so obviously it’d never have been a factor in her design phase.

DS universe is not popular at all with general audiences (excluding cosplayers)

i’d rather have Capcom get the license for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and make a TMNT Tournament Fighters reboot with it.
has potential for a godlike singleplayer experience for casuals (think of NRS styled story mode), also an interesting universe to pick characters from that still has some brand recognition with wider audiences

It’s not really a factor. The SF universe is popular because of the games, not the other way round. Also brand recognition can be built through marketing no matter what (as illustrated by watch_dogs which seems to be commercially successful despite just about everyone agreeing its characters are lame). Any comment that the characters aren’t appealing etc is just marketing not doing their job properly.

Oh yeah, good point.
