Looking it up, yeah most of the development staff, art designers, composer, producer, etc. have left Capcom . Though Capcom could at least contract the Akiman who was the main art designer. They could contract Wavelink Zeal (consisting of the original Darkstalkers composer and wife), or Michiru Yamane who did the soundtracks for many Castlevania games as well as Skullgirls. Get a young new visionary as head director to hire rest of the staff. Yeah it is a pipe dream that Capcom would actually do this, but it is possible.
I disagree with the last part of your statement. That type of statement could be made about any franchise that has been away for a long time. Vampire Savior plays like no other fighting game before or since.
Exactly, even if the old team has gotten back together, I seriously doubt they’d be anywhere near as good as they used to be or given anywhere near the amount of creative freedom they were allowed back then.
People should just let Darkstalkers remain as one of the few Capcom series that ended with a high note.
while good in gameplay, unfortunately ArcSys games lack in the animation department.
it is like comparing the recent mediocre Blazblue series to an 80s/early 90s anime OVA.
Played some VS over the weekend and all of us concluded that a nextgen VS would probably be booty buttcheeks unless they do something drastic about their business/development strats (stop catering to noobs by default etc).
I think a better investment for Capcom would be sell a bit of arcade kit that adds a ranking system to all their old games. It’s clear that this is what the players want if you look at what they’ve been doing with the Danisen ranking system. Once you attract more players, then you can start talking about nextgen VS.
Capcom owes me a throw, pushblock, good guard cancel, air chains, mvc 2 air command grab, usable darkforce, I could probably go on. Please buff my character Capcom!
Darkstalkers comic didn’t fall off, they finished it. And I thought it was pretty good. You can tell UDON really enjoyed workin’ on that shit.
Yeah they can. Stop making fighting games. lol
And why make a new Darkstalkers? This goes for anything, but from a business perspective, you always wanna diversify your products/portfolio if and when you can. You wanna create more avenues to make money, especially when you’re offering a one trick pony(Street Fighter/fighters with SFs in it) in a crowded field(FG genre).
It is a trick indeed, and fooled millions including myself. Players who were expecting something akin to the quality of SF2 series, SF3 series, even Alpha series and yet new.
Darkstalkers has a much better shot at making money in the West today, than it did when it was released in the mid 90s. Back then it was too wild, too anime, too over the top. Marvel took off cause it starred many ultra popular comic book characters that kids grew up loving.
Anyways now we can see with Blazblue selling over a million, popularity of Persona4A, Melty blood, Arcana Heart, and the incredible anticipation for Xrd (which will likely sell a ton)…the market is much more favorable for a game like Darkstalkers. Japan was always accepting, but the west is now much more accepting as well.
It does have a better shot at hitting big, but not necessarily because people are more accepting of anime (even though this statement has truth to it).
When Darkstalkers debuted in 1994 (and became more established some years later), it was around the time where the 3D fighters started to take the lion’s share of the market. Combine this with the fact that it was hard to get perfect arcade ports (much less console extras) and being a new IP, and it had no realistic chance of competing with the bigger games.
Things have changed obviously. The market now favors 2D fighters again and arcade ports aren’t as problematic. While Darkstalkers isn’t a AAA brand, Capcom is, and the fact that Capcom would be printed on the box would give Darkstalkers a leg up for that reason alone (certainly over anything that SNKP or ArcSys would make).
Finally, I don’t believe ArcSys would do Darkstalkers much more justice than Capcom. While ArcSys would put more care into it’s visual appearance, Capcom has a better sense of US aesthetic and gameplay appeal. Also, ArcSys wouldn’t capture Darkstalkers zany “disney-like” animation any better than Capcom would (I don’t think I need to explain why). All in all, I’d rather have Capcom do it; I think their potential shortcomings on a modern day DS would hold better than ArcSys.
they had a small window to capitalize and they wasted it on deadrising 3 for xbox one… Microsoft finally used there rare owner ship and right timing to start developing a fighting game for release on next gen…when a next gen drops is the time most are able to make things and sale well and introduce new aspects, capcom wasted there window, i believe darkstalkers 4 would be blowing up on xbox one and ps4, they lost a opportunity to pull in alot to the franchise,
Its actually sad and proves how bad things are at capcom that they did not have a fighting game for both consoles of anytype ready for ps4 or x1 release
