Why I love this game

So, most of the people around here in the Richmond area have given up on SFxT, leaving me pretty much stranded until a semi-major rolls around to test out my skills in this game. The most common complaint is that there are too many time overs, and then they said that gems are dumb.

I still thoroughly believe that once that tournament patch comes out and gems become tournament legal, we’ll be seeing how this game is supposed to be played rather than just playing it “safe,” but that’s not why I will stick with this game for months and possibly years. The reason I am going to stick with this game is because this game, maybe more than anything I’ve seen in the past few years, rewards me for fundamental knowledge.

Everything I learned about hit-confirms, magic series, different ways of waking up from a knockdown, footsies, blocking, frames, all of the intangible stuff is put into play in this game and I’m rewarded for knowing how to use it. If a win a match, I win it honestly, and if I lose a match, I lost it honestly as well. You’re rewarded for blocking correctly, and most Magic Series are unsafe so everything you do in this game is a commitment. There’s no Rage Mode or X-Factor to worry about an unfair comeback, and there’s no Ultra forcing me to change my attack strategy mid-match so I don’t eat a full Ultra and lose 450 or so points of damage. There’s Pandora, but the only way that’s going to be effective is if you have a Gem unit gimmicked around it (again, why I think Gems are necessary, and being they’re all going to be free anyway it shouldn’t be a problem). Anti-air specials like Shoryuken and Tiger Uppercut aren’t nearly as good as they were in IV, and are no longer the get-out-of-jail free card that they were in IV. Proper execution is rewarded, and sloppy execution is punished.

I keep hearing how flawed this game is either IRL or on the forums, calling it incomplete or whatever, but I love this game WAY more than I did Soul Calibur V, a game that I’m apparently not too shabby at using what I know of Astaroth in 3 and 4, at but can’t be assed to buy into it or improve my game because it desperately feels like it needs a Super/Ultimate. There are a few infinites from what I’ve seen, but apart from the Jin Swag Kick I haven’t seen anyone actually do anything worthwhile in a tournament playing these characters. They’ll be patched out soon anyway, so whatever.

Between this and KOFXIII, I’m a rather happy camper right now, and I didn’t think it was possible for me to love a video game like I love these two games, especially now that I work as a teacher and for the most part have bigger worries than I did when I was in uni.

That’s why I’ll continue playing this and continue hyping about it. Everyone in this game is so fun and despite how much I sang the praises of this game pre-release, somehow it still exceeded my expectations.

It’s really refreshing to see someone praising the game for the various things it does right, rather than attacking it at every angle. No, it’s not perfect, but it’s the most fun I’ve had from a 2D fighter in a long while. I think gems add a little something to the game, characters are varied and fun to play as, and the whole system has had some real thought put into it (with the exception of Pandora, I don’t really understand that one very much…).

I love it because Lili is in it

This sums up pretty nicely why I’m enjoying the game so much as well, and will continue to keep playing. I keep saying this but it bears repeating: Capcom’s PR surrounding the game is horrible and they made some crappy moves in regards to DLC and features, but the game itself and what’s already there is damn good, and I’m really enjoying it.

I feel differently about SCV as I’m actually really enjoying it alongside this and KOF XIII (although I still need to play both more), and plan to play all three a ton at locals and online.

Despite all the DLC crap, I must say this is a damn good game it feels like a lenient KOFXIII. Not sold on the gems they feel kinda pointless, but i’m looking forward to the streams in the coming months

This is as close to a Final Fight fighting game I’ll ever have I dig it. Also I’m learning how to combo much more in this title than SSF4, and MVC3 I don’t really enjoy the combos all that much.

I love this game and it has been a long time since i have loved a game this much, Probably not since third strike to be completely honest. The characters, the mix-ups, the timer. I love it all above all the gameplay of course. As for the dlc i dont care, im just happy that i get to explore more characters. I just cant wait until the tourny patch and we are able to use are gems in majors, that’s really the only thing i feel is missing. I agree with Seth killian when he said the gems add to the balance of this game. Andi cant wait to see what it becomes in the coming years.

Another thread praising the game for what it is, and its a good fighter without a doubt, so far out of the games i’ve bought in the last 6 months I’ve played the hell out of KOFXIII, SCV, and SFxTK. In the coming months SFxTK is going to continue to blow up and maybe be bigger then SFIV at Evo…you never know~

This game is good, that is all.

Thank god we got grapplers who dont suck for once.

Totally agree this game is awesome. One of the only games, that i find myself wanting to go to the training mode. Heihachi is so fun to play, his combos are a blast to pull off in a match. Everything else i really like to, the graphics, sounds & music, the stages, and the presentation are all great in my opinion. Hope this game is enjoyed for what it is, and not overshadowed by the sketchy dlc practice of Capcom. Now i’m going to go play some more, gotta get my fix.

If SfxT became the main event at EVO this year it’ll be the hypes top 8 of all time. I love AE but i really think this game is the bees knees

This game is incredible. Marn was right, it really is better than Guilty Gear.

I wonder if there is any MvC2 players who would say this game was better then it? No third strike player would dare however…

you just started a nuclear war

I was one of the lucky guys who had MVC2 back when it first came out for PS2 before it promptly disappeared off the market again (I didn’t have a Dreamcast until much later). I will say unflinichingly I’m having a much better time with this game than I did with that, and back then I still had “teenage obsession” mode on with SF and Spider-man. Of course, back when I was playing MVC2, things like “IT’S MAHVEL BABY” hadn’t come into play yet.

I second your opinion completely. this game really is a lot of fun

It IS good, it’s great, but I can’t fight the feeling that “something is wrong”.

I can’t put my finger on it. It just doesn’t excite me.

Perhaps when I get the PC version and don’t have to wait 5 minutes to play online.

I know the answer. There’s no real comeback factor at all in this. SFIV has ultras, UMvC3 has X-factor, SCV now has supers and EX moves, KOF has an awesome plethora of new features including HD and Neomax. SFxT only has the Cross Arts/Cross Assault. The Cross Assault was hype when you could control both characters but it was deemed broken so its less hype. Cross arts are pretty hype though. Basically unlike Marvel and SFIV, the best player will most likely win.

Yes, that’s it!!

Matches in SFIV between two equally skilled players had exciting moments where you had no idea who was going to win.

You spend 60% of the time in a SFxT match watching combos that anyone can do, and they always start with an easy cross-up or a standing light punch that neither player had any plans to block or hit confirm. It’s just too random when some combo starts, and when it’s over one player is at 50% health. At the end of the match, there will be EITHER huge differences in health, or time will run out.

I’m sorry, but I don’t find it entertaining to watch.

I found SF4 to be more of a spectators sport than SFxT. I couldn’t get too much into SF4. The ultra/come-back potential, the safe on block stuff and the focus attack I couldn’t quite wrap my head around. Some characters fared better than others and things seemed a bit too match-up dependent for my liking. Sure this game is in its early stages and we’ll have tier lists and ridiculous claims about it eventually (or already), but there is so much potential and depth to this game.

This game I actually want to play when I see other people playing it. Like, after watching a stream I wanna just load up the playstation and try similar things I see and try and alter things to suit my own scrubby playstyle. With that said despite online being pretty painful for waiting, etc., offline and training with a group (2v2!) is tonnes of fun! People don’t have to be great at the game to have fun, especially after doing the basic tutorial modes. Cross-assault in 2v2 is about as much fun as I’ve ever had in a fighting game
