Well who were the biggest contributors and supporters of the gaming industry during its early years? It only makes sense for a industry mostly built and supported by men and young boys to be dominated by men. And since young males are the biggest consumer of games, what do you appeal to them with? Girls. Hence the sexualised female characters in gaming. I’m not saying that’s all it takes to sell a game to men. It still has to look fun to play, but it helps.
Hahaha how did I know you were gonna resort to that flawed statistic from Kotaku? Oh yeah that’s everyones go to argument for women in gaming. That statistic neglects to mention that the vast majority of that 48% play mobile games on tablets and phones. Women who game on console and PC are still a pretty small minority. Don’t be fooled by that “48% of women are gaming” statistic. It doesn’t tell the whole story.
Back to the main point. If women want things changed in gaming, they need to get into game design like someone mentioned earlier. But the women I’ve talked to recently. None of them are talking about pursuing game design. Where as guys I’ve talked to. A decent number of them have an intest and desire to get into it. There’s your reason for why men dominate the industry.
Doesn’t a large percentage of that cover mobile/social media games though. I don’t wanna debate the merits of what constitutes a real game but I think it’s important to establish exactly what games women are playing and on what platforms.
Anyways to echo what hoody said, the early adopters of the gaming industry were mostly boys/men so it makes sense that gaming is largely associated with male preferences and ideas. There isn’t a real issue though because nothing is preventing women from becoming involved in the industry and making their own games…it’s a big enough place to accommodate a wide range of taste.
“No longer a respected group of video game producers” all cause of the gigolo mode?
So… what makes this statement so wrong is the fact he made shout outs to his previous title when L-O-FUCKIN-L!!!
Let’s see what came out before that.
lol @ that one fuckin boss fight where that dude throws chics at you to guard himself from attacks in No More Heroes.
lol @ Shadows of the Damned, literally any part of the game at any cut scene at any time.
lol @ Lollipop Chainsaw that gives you an achievement for looking down the main character’s skirt and among other goofy/perverted awards.
Oh but gigolo mode?
Nah dawg, fuckin crossing the line… awww man… that line… that no one knows where it’s placed yet… is crossed by this fuck head.
Yeah I don’t have a problem with people having opinions that are very different and even less logical than my own, that’s fine me not berating shogunz for liking DmC is proof of that But this whole hypocritical crusade to cherry pick what is okay and what’s not is not just immature and short sighted, but when these people are called out on it they go into complete denial mode. I fucking blame the internetz as much as the people themselves, people especially these “social justice warriors” sorry @fishjie i had to use the term just can’t ever admit to any wrongdoing ever, whatever happened to being an adult and admitting when you’re wrong and learning from your mistake?
I don’t disagree that sexism is an issue in games, I don’t think anyone would dispute that, but to pretend it’s only a few specific games and not a systemic mentality like what others here mentioned in the last few posts is ignorance, denial, dishonesty, and laziness combined at it’s finest. Of course these guys are just trying to shill their site/video/whatever to get more clicks and views which is what makes games journalism a microcosm of everything wrong with news journalism and politics as @Weeks or someone else mentioned before.
The problem is that social justice warriors are very dishonest about the issues they discuss and will hijack legitimate societal problems in order to further their own agenda. The reason people like Anita and others like her don’t allow for a open discussion on these topics is because they know they are lying and don’t want to be called out on their nonsense. It’s become to common to throw around labels like sexism and misogyny as a way to silence dissenting views…not to mention the definition of these terms are increasingly becoming more and more skewed. The people who argue against SJW have always said they don’t mind if women make games or play games but at the same time they aren’t going to ruin their hobby just so some special snowflakes feel validated.
If we reduce our set of games to AAA type titles, what percentage of the players are male vs female? We can’t answer that as we probably don’t have data.
