You don’t need to ask a marketing research firm (although if you did you’d get plenty of hard evidence) to know that the vast majority of video games are marketed towards 18-36 year old males, that’s how it’s been for at least the past 20-30 years and it won’t change anytime soon.
Don’t take this as an insult because its not meant to be one, but you don’t seem to understand business 101, this is a capitalist market, the gaming industry caters to 18-36 year old males much more than any other demographic because that’s the one that spends the most money on games. It’s not a chicken or the egg scenario either because video game sales weren’t always dominated by this demographic, that’s just how the market shifted and the industry adapted to accommodate it heavily. Also the vast majority of people who work at publishers/developers are males most of whom grew up playing games so you have an industry shaped by and for 18-36 year old males who have still made many successful games featuring female characters and no I don’t mean as just window dressing and you complain women are not to blame
I’m not saying there shouldn’t be games tailored to women whatever that means, that’s an ignorant and sexist stance, but for a woman to complain about feeling alienated by their perception of their being no games for them is like for a mom and pop store to complain about having to close down because everyone shops at Walmart. If women have such a big problem with being underrepresented than why not actually do something constructive to solve the issue rather than bitch and whine about it in the Internet? Women can get involved in game development themselves, financially support the games that currently cater to them as 9/10 times voting with your wallet is the only thing companies in any industry respond to, talk about specifically what the problem is for women in gaming today and solutions to those problems. And yet the vast majority of the vocal women in the gaming community do none of these things and you’re actually defending them expecting not to be looked at as illogical.
The gaming industry under represents non white men just as much if not more so than women, and it’s a more important problem currently because non white men contribute a hell of a lot more to video game sales than women. Yet you ignore that because acknowledging it would make your slavery apology even more illogical and misleading than it already is.
It’s worth noting that women did become the majority of electronic consumers a few years back. A lot of studies were published on the subject and a reoccurring trend seemed to be that the simpler and more aesthetically pleasing the product the more it attracted women.
This part stood out to me the most:
I don’t know how applicable this would be to gaming but given that women were the majority of the non-gamer demographic that were pulled in the most by the wii craze…getting more women into gaming could be as simple as changing the apperance of gaming consoles and controllers. This isn’t a new idea of course and I’ve read some articles on the idea declaring it sexist and stereotypical…but given that the propositions from SJWs and feminist for "female friendly"games are vague and poorly explained I figure this could at least be a good starting point.
And you do understand that if you want the rest of that market, you have to address their needs, right? I work in marketing so I know this shit and I know that the games now are marketed towards a market that just isn’t women. They can change that but they are afraid to. What’s that saying about birds in a bush?
Now were just moving goal post at this point…a primarily complaint from SJWs/feminist is that games lack variety in the form of female protagonist. When this point is refuted by the fact that dozens of games have featured women as the lead character or in prominent roles…now it’s not about just having female protagonist but about games that “cater to them"as well. This then begs the question of"what does a female friendly game look like”…is it a game with conservatively dressed women, a game in which the development staff is largely women, a game that only has female characters. The problem here is that no one has defined what a game made for women would look like…it’s just a vague statement that has never been properly defined. It also just seems like a easy way to dismiss all the existing games that have women in the lead to yet again find another thing to complain about.
I’m not moving shit, you (how many times have you been banned already?) motherfucker. You can’t just stick a woman in the game as the lead, exploit her sexually, and think women will happily pick it up. That’s ridiculous.
Why the shit not? If cosplay is any indication, women love women in skimpy outfits. What exactly are women’s need that aren’t being met? If we are going to talk about women’s needs that should be addressed, what the fuck are they? Legit question, I don’t know wtf women want out of a video game other than something that makes them feel good.
Raz0r wrong as you are about the other stuff I pointed out last page, yeah I totally agree, just putting a woman as the lead and saying “hey women see we care about you here’s a game just for you!” Works about as well as putting a bandaid on a severed limb. Then that raises the question which I implied in my past post: What exactly is it that women as a whole want from a video game? What type of game would satisfy the majority of them?
Sees free to play Kim Kardashian game shoot up to #1 most popular game on iOS within a week of it’s launch
I imagine women who play video games do not want to be objectified. They want normal women in the lead, not women who have giant tits, super thin, etc. etc.
So women want to kill the video game industry with F2P, ‘everyone is a winner’, shiny bullshit, the same way they killed the vampire genre and network TV…
Exploit her…are you saying sexually appealing women in revealing clothing are exploitative…isn’t this slut and body shaming. It’s amazing how quickly SJW types will resort to the tactics they accuse their opponents of…kind of like how Anita generalized all sex workers as being dumb mind controlled idiot drones who don’t know what’s good for them (which she rightfully got blasted for by actual sex workers lol).
At any rate this leads me back to my eariler point…what does a female friendly game look like and what qualities does it entail. On that note…samus is only skimpy for the endings of her games and only after you beat it fast enough…are you saying her brief exposure in space underwear is enough to offset the 99.9% of the time she’s completely covered. Also if women are in fact against sexually exploited women then the existence of cosplayers is a abnormality that shouldn’t be.
Women want a game that is easy to get into and makes them feel special, something that feels like they are being rewarded up front. They also love games that are cute and have puzzle elements so they can feel smart…which is why bust a move was so popular back in the day… …and why they continue to play all these match-three tetris clones…
Men are objectified too yet I don’t see men complaining about impossible body types that aren’t reflective of the typical male body. I also don’t know if I’d agree with your statement given that the new nicki minaj video is getting a lot of love by feminist communities like Jezebel. Romance novels also objectify women a lot on their covers and lets not even get into the popularity of 50 shades of grey…anyways as it’s been asked repeatedly what does a female friendly game look like.
I suppose I misspoke eariler when I said no one has properly defined what a female friendly game looks like. According to a video by Anita called"too many dicks," it isn’t just enough to not have women in skimpy clothing but also to have women engage in minimal violent activities…she also thinks that women using swords and guns are problematic too since they are phallic weaponry (her actual words) so I guess according to someone like her the idea female friendly game would be a puzzle game with a androngenous looking female lead.
Almost all the shows targeted at women have some sort of exploitation to them. Lucy lawless was a warrior princess in a mini skirt, la femme Nikita had a bunch of sex, grey’s anatomy has good luckin people constantly fucking. If we want the average woman to play, and 50 shades of grey is any indication, they like a little bit of degradation and made to feel sexy.
Let’s face it, the average woman seems to indulge in some fantasies that don’t translate well. They love sexy looking women and then love bitching about them? Who loves dance shows? Women. Who are the ones we the skimpy outfits in these shows? Women. They love the female figure to be a certain way then feel bad when that’s no them.
Fuck it, the average broad makes no fucking sense. I don’t know how you’d make a game about complaining about yourself while not doing anything about it.
For references sake…whenever SJWs and feminist bring up the issue of objectification and sexualization just know its a fucking double standard and hypocrisy.
This part pretty much invalidates the validity to the whole “but women don’t wanna be exploited by sexualized images of other women in this sexist male dominated industry.”
I’m not going to pretend I know the answer to the issue at hand, but we could probably start by talking to women who play games instead of assuming we know their preferences.
I agree, but most women who play non-cellphone, five minute bullshit games are outliers who don’t mind a little hard work to get better at a game, or talk more shit than I do when playing fighters.
Very few that you would interview would be able to give you a solid criteria to follow, which is why the entire “female inclusion” debate has been, and will continue to be stupid as fuck.
Mainstream Journalism is not a sterling example either, when you got places like Fox News and MSNBC who literally get to create the news instead of reporting it and this is considered legit journalism, of course other forms of journalism will be just as corrupt.
We already have a indication though if we gauge women’s interest by what most women are currently playing and purchasing. It might not be the most politically correct answer but it’s one that the market is clearly indicating. On that note if only women can know what women want then what’s stopping women from creating their own games and starting up their own development studios…it’s all about taking initiatives and ambition.
A woman was largely responsible for the first Assassins Creed game, for better or worse she was the reason that Desmond was put in the game as she felt it added more “story” to the game. Originally all that modern day nonsense everyone hated was not part of the game and was added on.
