Hey, hows the DS UMK3 WiFi and controls? My friend wants to buy that game on DS, so I’m going to get it just to kick his ass. I have’nt seen UMK3 DS around lately for sale?
In addition to never really trying to be a good fighting game, it always seemed like it also never really tried to be a particularly well put together one. Digitized actors was cute for like 5 seconds back in the 16-bit days, but it effectively screwed the visual quality as well as the overall char design by limiting it to whatever cheap spandex crap they could put together with the $5 budget they apparently had. Oh no, black bodybuilder inexplicably wearing purple tights vs. the BMX cyborg! Which of these mighty challengers will win this epic battle?
I loved MK back in the day too, but looking back on it, every aspect just oozed mediocrity, and it actually applied to just about every Midway game back then even moving into 3D. The Cruis’n games looked pretty crappy too, like they were trying to use relatively high-res graphics to make up for completely uninspired visual design. Problem is, if there’s one thing that somehow manages to look even crappier than digitized actors, it’s early-era 3D. Except early era 3D also meant it ran at a choppy framerate too, which is always a bonus.
Plus the gameplay everyone else mentioned. MK vs. DC? Everyone could smell a marketing deal masquerading as a game.
i dont hate mk myfav is umk3 cause you can do combos and mk4
UMK3 is one of those games alot of SRK’ers missed out on, when that shit got revitalized numerous times. I caught the train again(I’m sayin, after it was out long ago) when it came out on XBL.
I remember a few years ago on srk, like maybe 03, Lex posted up some high level shit for UMK3 and this forum was drooling. Then in 06 I think, the game dropped on XBL and it was time to give the game your new ‘not a lil kid anymore so I don’t mash’ mindset, and truly see what the game was all about, even in XBL lag.
Not many on SRK was playing. This happens repeated times, for multiple games that aren’t entitled Street Fighter. The fact that everyone tries so hard to get others to understand how good street fighter is, if they haven’t played it, to dismiss other games so quickly is outrageous.
Thanks to Lex, Shock, and Crazy Dominican, for showing me what UMK3 was really all about.
UMK3 is/was mad fun. Too bad I sucked at it though. BTW, Kitana for life, and a lil bit of BMX ninjas(Cyrax), motherfuckers.
Wifi, no idea.
Controls are good, and configurable.
Only thing I miss is a practice mode.
=> AMERICA HAS INFINITE (COMBO) POTENTIAL
Yeah, just like he balanced Akuma in remix, right?
But as an aside, glad to see all the MK support in here, wish John Tobias would come back as welll instead of just giving Boon free reign, as well as add some other guys onto the team that know wtf they’re doing, get the game back to the point where the fights were the important parts with the fatalties as icing on the cake.
Only thing I like about the new 3d MKs is that one Cooking with Scorpion segment that was a krypt extra in DA I think.
Also the original MK fatality theme = too good, just a couple of drum beats for ending someone’s life, actually creeped me out when I was younger.
I never hated the MK series, in fact, I liked the games a lot when I was younger, they were part of my childhood. Back in the day I remember all my friends were playing the first MK games with much interest, everyone loved dem ninjas, obviously Scorpion being the favorite of some people, I started to play the series from MK2 (I never had the chance to play the first game) long time ago, I remember having good time while doing silly stuff like Fatalities, Babalities, etc. I had fun with all the 2D games, then the series went to 3D and that’s where the problems begun, the mechanics changed drastically and the feeling wasn’t the same when playing the games like if it were Tekken or something like that (the games are nothing alike, but is just an small example of another 3D game), I feel bad for what happened to the games and I know there are still MK fans that wants to revive the series with UMK3 and I support that, the game was full of hilarious shit, the game was/is too fun and wish I could have a Gold account in 360 to play games with some users of SRK.
Is good to see some MK love around here, I never though I could see some serious UMK3 scene in my country until I found this site, and that’s actually a good thing, I appreciate it.
I used to be a Cyrax/Reptile player by the way, I’m not that good, but I wish I could play UMK3 again someday.
The people that hate on the MK series are just your average Shit Fighter fans who play a game where there is a little pause between every punch.
Yes, I went there.
I remember that, lol.
The only flaw about UMK3 is “No Baraka” ?
Can someone with MK2 for PS3 talk a bit about the online and such. I can say that UMK3 runs smooth 80% of the time on 360, and you can always find a ranked match.
Honestly? I hate the MK series for the simple fact that it is the 2D equivalent of a dial-a-combo fighting game for me. Of course, that isn’t to say that those type of games are bad, but they’re insanely aggravating when you incorporate juggle combos that can 0 to death you and can’t be broken out of depending on the set up (Safe of Tekken 6.)
Granted, I don’t know any much about MK so my getting raped could be credited to my lack of know-how, lol.
One of the things I don’t like about MK now that I think about it is that you have to hit a button to block instead of the standard back/downback to block. Playing it on a console, and having to hit the start button was extremely awkward. Hell, I didn’t even know you could block in that game until I was older. It’s just something that I think should of been obvious from the start.
In MK, theres a separate block button cause holding back activates throw protection. Since early games have no overheads, holding back+down+block results in absolute block.
There really is something special about the “feeling” of gameplay in 2D MK games, both because of the actual gameplay but also the graphics/sound effects. A very different feeling from other fighters. Or maybe it’s just deeply rooted nostalgia from the time when playing a video game was magical. In any case, I love it.
Also, Sektor is so much fun to play.
You know, I was just looking at a video of MC1 the other day, and all I could think was “wow, this game certainly hasn’t aged well”. I am sure it is still fun once you get into it but with so many superior fighters out there why put in the time?
It’s spelled with a K
And isn’t MK1 horribly broken? If one is going to put time into a MK game, I don’t think MK1 would be the first choice.
Damn, in UMK3 there are so many characters who are just plain pure fun to play as. MK9 as a 2.5d clone of UMK3 would be gdlk.
Tried a bit of MK2. Way slower than I remembered. Frankly, it felt too slow. Not intense like UMK3. So we went back to playing that.
^Sonia is the goddess of MK1, and Mileena rules MK2 iirc.
I really like the series. It’s very unique as the other fighting games. I don’t have a problem with a block button. While making MK1, Boon and Tobias were trying to not make it a copy of SF2.
I’m really looking forward to MK9. Boon says that it’ll have stop-motion characters so it’ll be like the first three MK games.
Mileena and Jax rule UMK2
Jax because his ground pound controls the screen
And his spandex controls my heart.
