This is a question that has been on my mind for some time. When we see a game either on TV, in a magazine or on the net, usually we’re like “I have to get that game!”. What motivates you on deciding to get that particular game?
To me, I’m a sucker for happy endings. I usually try to beat the game I play whenever I get the chance and in fighting games, particularly the ‘newer’ Street Fighter games, if someone challenges me, I try to beat them as they usually only play Ken and Akuma (no offense to Ken and Akuma players).
For fighting games like MK:Deception where you have to unlock a nice amount of characters, this is a task that I enjoy doing, although it can be very frustrating.
So to the rest of you, why do you buy and play games?
fighting games have endless replay value and are the type of games where there is always something else to learn. It is even better if you know some people to play with and learn from one another.
What he said. It’s my outlet and in a weird way keeps me happy and sane. I suck balls at anything else non RPG (e.g. shooters, side-scrollers, platformers) so yeah.
I play video games because it’s what I do. It’s my hobby. I’ve been doing it since 1989, unlike the kids today who are whining on about how cool they are that they have an “old school psx” which was made in 1995.
Fighting games, I play for 2 things. The action, and the strategy. I’m not hardcore arcade style though, so I usually stick with fighting games that have half decent AI(like Capcom vs. SNK 2).
As for 3D fighters, bleh, I hate them. Ever played Power Stone? OH GOD. THE HORROR. THE RUSHDOWN MOVES MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR OTHERS TO MOVE. THE ANGST. dsfkldssgf
cuz i like getting better and better at most of the stuff i do, especially the stuff i enjoy. in everything that i do i try to be above average even if i don’t really care for it, but i try really hard once i do start to care. when i was really little, i never really thought i was really good at anything (besides getting good grades. but that’s easy as hell in elementary school), i just did stuff… my attention was first focused on grades. then it became fighting… then many years later i added video games on to that
also, one part i absolutely love about fighters is the mind reading aspect, because whether you guys know it or not, you can learn ALOT about a person if you look at the way they play fighters.
It’s all about the competition for me. It’s the only reason why I play fighters in general. The social contact is good too, but sometimes ppl can be real dicks. Especially the elitists pricks who think they know it all.
But I like the competition simply because I like seeing how differently someone uses a character compared to my style of play.
I play fighting games because of their replay value and because it’s just plain fun. No matter where you go, you allways have some sort of competition.
I have violent tendencies and a strong fighting spirit if you can call it that, but I can’t go around starting fights with people(nor do I want to), and fighting games are like an outlet for me to get my thrills. Some others mentioned similar reasons earlier, it may sound odd, but it’s kinda like the thrill of living through the characters and stuff. When I play a game, I can visualize myself in some badass worldwide tournament kicking ass and gaining respect, I love that sort of thing.
Also, the games are just plain fun, and sure beats the hell out of sucky as reality.
Replay value, when you get hooked on a fighting game you would usually wanna get as much out of it as you can and every session with it always yields something new to learn…even from other people. So much to explore, when you think you know everything something new will always come along and you’d wanna nail it down. Fighting games tend to also bring out every bit of hardcore thinking that you have to muster. Like someone said before, it’s like chess on crack.
Most other genres you really can’t do that with , like with rpgs and adventure games. Once you’ve done everything there is to offer and followed the one path made for you there usually isn’t a reason to keep playing it over and over and over…things become predictable. Sooner or later you stop, until a new title comes out. With a fighting game you can stick with a title as long as you want regardless of how old it is, such as ST. Also you get to play with friends.
