he’s boring, he doesn’t change his clothes,he takes himself to seriously. did i mention he’s boring?
yes ryu is boring but his story is very intrigueing and interested. The reason why i like ryu as a character is because he’s different than other fighters. He dont really care about being the champion, world domination, revenge, riches, and fame. All he want to do is to improve himself. Plus his evil counter part makes an interesting story to follow. I just wished that He actually become evil and kick the living shit out of everyone.
You know what would be a good idea for street fighter 4? since in street fighter 3, ryu trained with oro. capcom should make ryu a last boss in street fighter 4. He could have his shotokan moves and oro moves. he would be unstoppable. Imagine a hadoken flying at you while rocks, pots, pans, and brooms waiting for the oppurtunity to smack you across the head :wow: . If you could dodge the hadoken you would face a shoryuken. “…shiver…”
Let’s see.
He doesn’t fight for vengeance, justice or winning. Fighting just to win at any means even killing somebody is what leads to the Satsui No Hadou. He fights just to be the best that he could be. He is dedicated to one thing and one thing alone, being the best. It’s something we should all strive for, to be the best we can be at one single thing.
Aside from that, Ryu is like the perfect combination of two of the greatest Manga/Anime Characters ever, Goku of Dragon Ball Z and Kenshiro of Fist of the North Star. (This may help you understand his popularity in Japan at least.)
Like Goku -
He doesn’t win all the time, (Yes, Goku does not win all the time. Read the Manga.) is a glutton, they both have Eternal Rivals where the victor of their matches is never truly settled minus cheap wins (Ryu/Sagat, Goku/Vegeta, Kyo/Iori, Kenshin/Saito, etc.)was adopted by a martial artist, Goku transforms into a big Monkey - Ryu has SNH, he’s naive about woman and the Hadouken was based on the Kamehameha.
Like Kenshiro -
Soft spoken, his Master was killed by his greatest rival, he constantly roams the Earth, has a blonde haired rival, is always seen walking into the sunset and Kenshiro has a move that looks EXACTLY like the Hurricane Kick.
Ryu does change his clothes. There is plenty of Artwork in Capcom Illustrations that show him wearing plain clothes. When the SF2 Animated Movie came out, the director decided not to give him or anyone any or very few clothing changes because a SF2 Poster that had the entire cast had an effect on him that everyone in the movie should stay in costume. That’s where it started with Ryu, but yeah, you can say now he doesn’t change clothes if you want. And why would he? Fashion means NOTHING to Ryu.
BTW, Ryu doesn’t take himself as seriously as you think. In SF3 he tells Ibuki “You’re great, but you’re no GUY” so he does have a sense of humor. He even credits Elena on her “bounciness” so he’s not anti-sexual either. He has the innocence of a child. If you watch a lot of Anime/read Manga/Martial Arts Movies or hell, Asian Movies in general you will begin to understand this. Think just about any Jackie Chan Movie and the innocence he portrays. BTW, Goku was inspired by Jackie Chan, Ryu was inspired (in some parts) by Goku.
If you hate Ryu so much, ask yourself the question, why are you Posting on a Board called SHORYUKEN.COM.
In SF2V when he faced Guile in the cave, he didn’t wish to fight him for revenge, for if he didn’t get beaten by Guile he never would of started this journey. He wished to thank Guile and felt he had many things to discuss with him. While the Anime was not official, the Games have shown this to be Ryu’s true character. This was the exact moment he became my favorite Video Game Character of all time.
Because Ryu was the 1st SF2 character i pick and went up aganst Guile for the 1st time and whoop Guiles candy ass with him. To you, his personality may seem boring, but to me hes fascinating. just read the rice message on my signature and you’ll know what i mean. Its true that we do got some badass characters today, but how many badass characters do we need?? sometimes its not character design that I like, but their personality may be very interesting too like Maki. I like her personality in the game already, but i do wish capcom would expand on her more either through street fighter comics or movies would do the trick.
just look at WWE Hulk Hogan. when he became nWo Hollywood Hogan, everybody like him alright, but after he went to WWE and transform into the Hulkster again, he got even more fans coming back:wow:
Ryu does NOT fight to be the best. That’s more like Akuma, he wins full force and does it honorably. Ryu is something different, he keeps fighting to learn. He wins, he loses, doesn’t matter to him. Ryu enjoys the fight, whether it be a loss or win.
Look Assholes Fuck All Of You Bitches Ryu is cool Just like every character in Street Fighter.Quote The Power Never More.
Wow, that’s amazing logic. Don’t debate with this guy, he’s good! I love it when people create an account just to rant.
Because of his low forward?
The same could be said of Superman. They’re archetypes.
Just to add to that, Ryu does have somewhat of an attitude. He gets frustrated with Sean because he doesn’t he learn anything each time he fights with him. His win quote to Sean in NG or 2I goes something like “If you can’t learn from your mistakes, then you’re hopeless!” or something to that effect. Don’t know exactly. This behavior is sort of reflected on in SvC, even though Capcom didn’t make it. He gets pissed at Terry because he doesn’t know shit about karate, he basically tells Dan to STFU when he starts rambling about his excellence, and in one of his win quotes, he calls you a simp.
Ryu isn’t always Mr. Nice-guy. He gets mad too.
Which is why he’s MY favorite character! He might come across as boring, but he lives for the fight, and never stops learning. Think about it…how many videogame characters are actually like him? I can’t think of any at the moment…
Ryu… the vegabond who dropped off the earth… you compare him to me…AARRRGHHH
but what about him and akuma? doesnt he want revenge for akuma killing his master?
lol, I love that classic T. Hawk line.
Yeah, Ryu’s been my fav. character since I first picked up SF2. He’s the classic cool karate guy.
I personally dont find Ryu boring but his story line is…it doesn’t have a twists and such and somehow he always manages to win.
As for the reason people might like Ryu is because it might be some one to look up to because he never gives up, is not evil etc.
Btw when you say different than other fighters you mean attitude right? I mean he has like 5 clones of himself
Why does Ryu fight?
Ryu fights to find himself.
That’s beautiful in itself.
And you couldn’t be more wrong.
- Ryu lost to Ken in A2
- Ryu lost to Bison solo in A3
- Ryu did not win the SF2 tourney
- Ryu lost the SF3 tourney to Oro
He always wins “at heart” then :karate: and it’s always the “he still won attitude”
I think he did win the sf2 tourney…But that just my opinion. And by the way Ryu kicks ass.
Actually, I think you can attribute that particular quote to good old-fashioned japanese sexism. Seems to me he’s saying she can fight well, but not as well as a man.
