The mantra of so many before you…
Whatever dude. I’m done here. You’re obviously too far into your own theoretical nonsense that you’re not worth talking to.
Point is - banning characters is a stupid idea unless they’re agreed upon by the community they’re over powered.
Examples:
Shin Akuma (A2)
Akuma (ST)
Gill (3S)
G.Rugal / S.Akuma (CvS2)
On the OP: Banning characters based on people not liking to fight/watch them is dumb. Giants didn’t win Evolution last year. Zero did, thus they’re not overpowered.
If you’re talking about rinky dink tournaments that 10 locals show up to, then whatever, you can do what you want. Nobody is going to say “ban” on that premise for Evolution or SBO, unless it’s a side-tournament. It takes a LOT to ban a character in a large competitive scene.
Do you not see any irony in saying he couldn’t adapt when so many of you want the game dumbed down to training wheels because you can’t win? Holy shit… someone send me a facehugger, my palm isn’t big enough…
lol You think that’s its dumb…I agree…But what could he have done? Nothin.
“But this is the way everyone else does it and it should be done like that!”…Yeah well it wasnt.
I’ma enter into the next mma tourney and not enter cause they dont allow elbows to the face…Yeah.
What Ever. Odd’s are you’re gonna come across a situation like that at another point in time (may not be often)and you just gotta make do.
let’s just revert back to the era of “if it wasn’t in the arcade version it’s banned”, by extension if there was no arcade verision everyhting in the game s banned.
Get DQ’d at signups for MVC3
Your homework for tonight, young one, is to go into the Domination 101 section of this site and read ALL of Seth Killian’s articles.
Then go to sirlin.net and read all of Sirlin’s “Playing to Win” articles.
If you can read all of that and still come back here tomorrow and spout this kind of nonsense THEN you’ll be entitled to some kind of serious answer.
That mentality is stupid in today’s fighting games. It was ok back then when arcades were prime, but not anymore. Heck I remember being in a discussion for KOFXI about whether or not the console exclusive characters should be banned or not. Not many made good reasons to ban them aside from “they are not in arcade version so ban them” (aside from Shion and Magaki).
at this point banning chars only because they are not in the arcade version is just plain stupid
ban chars that are broken, and chars that are console exclussive (and tbh i dont agree with this totally)
They arent always necessarily broken in the 1st place.
Every time I hear somebody criticizing the Smash community for having to strip down the game in order to get it competitive, I laugh. It’s not their fault that items fuck everything up if you want it as a competitive fighter.
The problem I have with the Smash community is that they’re trying to turn the game into something it isn’t, and that effectively splits the game’s playerbase. Less than a week ago, a couple of my college buddies randomly invited me to go to a SSB tourney. They banned 3 characters (MK, Lucas, and Diddy), all items, and the only stage you were allowed to play on was Final Destination. I understand trying to have fun with a game competitively, but when you play a game you’ve got to accept the game for what it is. Banning is something you reserve for the most strict of circumstances where a certain move or tactic is literally unbeatable. As with TvC, giants are a part of the game, and it’s something you know you’re going to have to deal with. They aren’t broken, they’re just different, and banning them because of that is just plain silly.
Eh, I never did care for that rule. I know it was a factor in CvS2 where Evil Ryu and Orochi Iori were banned simply because of that. I’m not sure where the characters stand in terms of power, but I’ve still seen that same rule enforced even for current CvS2 tourneys. I think it’s safe to say that at this point in time the rule should be dropped entirely.
You’re talking like Spawn/Hei/Link in SC2, or Darth/Yoda before they were on both?
Have you ever heard of Gold War Machine? Cause those TVC Giants are tone down verisons of this guy…
Gold War Machine wasn’t banned…take that as you will.
A well thought out and put together piece. Thank you.
Speaking of which, Infinite Super is like SFxT Cross Assault on crack. I honestly thought that shit is worse than X-Factor.
I’ll read it. But I doubt anybody is getting my point. When in rome…do as the muthaF’n romans do. Sure that might have been retarded that a char he played got banned but what could you do?( Maybe play with with the community who doesnt think he should be banned!) Somebody answer me that. That’s my whole point. Whether the reason they banned him cause he was too overpowered or they just didnt like the F’n look in his eye. I can bet that if they banned yun tommorow at some major tourney then I bet the same people would be pulling out those secondaries…
I guess this whole thing on a broader spectrum Is like this: It was dumb that they banned the chars…Is this issue gonna happen often? Prolly not. This was just one incident. But In my personal opinon I dont freakn mind
if they ban characters who are considered overpowered if that means a better payout at a tournament. I’d be pissed if I put a shitload of time into the char that got banned…but I’d just pull out that secondary and keep truckn. If I aint got one then I know next time that tournie comes around I need one.
I dont know…maybe it’s just me…I down to fight, whatever the rules. And if it gets to a point where I think the rules are retarded then I wont play.
I forgot to ask you this, where would WW Guile fit in all this (mainly speaking that one list you showed me of powerful characters)?
The thing is, your example is no different from banning characters in other fighting games. It just has items and stages into the mix too, which are unique features of Smash and are thus irrelevant comparisons to traditional fighting games.
Also, the current official ruleset has no characters banned and quite a few legal stages allowed. It’s a misconception to say that we ban everything when we only ban things that are unhealthy to the metagame (like items, for example, even though we do have a sub-ruleset called Item Standard Play that has a system similar to stage counterpicks. It’s not used often, though). The tournament you went to was using a terrible ruleset, let me assure you.
And they banned Lucas? Seriously? He’s not even mid-tier.
Pretty much what I was going to say. The tournament you cite was obviously not being held by anybody of any experience, and they sure as hell weren’t using the standard ruleset. Hell, Final Destination only should have given it away.
Cross Assault has nothing on MvC1 duos. Combos aside, team WM can chip like no tomorrow with that temporary infinite super:

Don’t get me wrong, I know that there are intelligent reasons behind some bans in the Smash community. My only complaint is that tourney play is so much different than casual play. Where as with SF and other fighters you’re simply playing to win no matter what situation, Smash actually differs since there’s rulesets and all that.
I’m not an adamant Smasher by any means, but that I was fully aware of. They banned Lucas for some dumb reason about him getting 40% off of a grab (or something like that). Which gets dumber b/c the tournament was 2v2. >_< That was actually my first time being in any sort of tournament environment (let alone a Smash one), so it did leave a sour taste in my mouth in regards to the game. Eh, my teammate and I left $10 richer though so I can’t complain too much. Here’s the exact ruleset they used if you’re curious:
Here’s the thing, giants in TvC play completely different than the rest of the cast. Unless you’ve been practicing with a regular team, a giant player who shows up at a TvC tourney and is told his character is banned will have nothing to fall back on.
