Why Do People Play 'Broken' Characters:In Defense of Character Selection

I realize that when it comes to bigger tournaments and scenes…but that aint the same for smaller ones. Check the smash scene…They might not ban characters…but stages are banned out the ass while things like wobbling are allowed. I’ve been to a small call of duty4 tourney back in the day where they banned claymores aswell…Are claymores too cheap? Not enough to ban them in my opinion But I can see that the tourney would turn into a campfest with them.

Stuff like that goes on all the time…Do I agree with it? No. But the choice is with the tournament organizers. They just want things to be fun enough for people to comeback and do it again.

The fuck are you bringing up Smash or Call of Duty for on a fighting game forum?

The lines between what should or should not be banned become very fuzzy when you base them on “boring”. What if some people like using claymores? Camping is a perfectly legitimate strategy that can be fun for some people. Do you think Quake becomes boring when the person having the lead just protects the spawn points of the good weapons and ammo/health?

Smash is accepted as a fighting game.Maybe not by you…but by the people who do play it. Like it or not. The call of duty example was an example. Stop trying to be a jackass.

…And the Cheap/Boring thing starts to delve into a discussion that I’ve seen many times on this board…I’m not going to go too far into it…That’s that mindset…“Scrubbish” Maybe. Maybe people should just learn to play the game multiple ways so you arent caught off guard by junk like this…You consider you’re self a competitive player? then makes sure you can compete nomatter the rules…Learn multiple ways to play…whether that means learning characters that arent Giants or what.

EDIT: By creating “ways” and rules to play ANY game you limit someone elses fun…No matter who that might be. Learning multiple ways to play is your job.

IMO As far as TvC Giants go, Lightan isn’t really that broken. PTX kinda is though. PTX is freaking amazing.

OK great, what does this have to do with banning stages in smash or a single explosive weapon in CoD? Name CoD classes that are banned. Just Claymores? Despite the stupidity of it, that’s hardly the same as banning full starting characters is it. It seems to me that the only reason these people would keep going back to small tournaments like you described, is because everything they whine about gets banned. I’ve seen small tournament ads where people are practically banning half of the game content. I wouldn’t want that kind of scene to survive because you’re sure as hell not playing the game as intended, you’re playing ‘lite’ which means you fucking suck. I’m surprised you guys aren’t banning fireballs.

Remind me again how this is for your enjoyment? If I turn up to a tourny with so much banned crap and still beat you with pokes, are you going to ban pokes because you didn’t enjoy the loss? Again, nobody is turning up for your enjoyment.

I can agree with banning console specific characters or perhaps those who have to be unlocked or bought, but starting content?

Yes they should, they should learn multiple ways including the way that beats characters and “cheap moves” that they cry so fucking hard about, but they won’t. They’ll play one way which they will percieve to be the most honourable and respectful way (because suddenly we’re all samurai following a code of bushido now) and any other way that deviates from their perception is wrong - even when they do it. You could put two of these “honourable” scrubs against each other and they’ll be arguing well before the end of the set because each others play style was too cheap.

Hell, you could put these people up against their gamer idols and they’d accuse them of being cheap when they get beaten into the ground.

You say that people should learn multiple ways? That’s called adapting, call me when you and your friends learn.

banning claymores???
now i know that humanity has no hope

why was hilde op?

As soon as she touched you she could pretty much just ring you out no matter where on the stage you were if I’m not mistaken.

It had to do with the fact the SC community allowed you to button map at the time as well.

Because you don’t create ways and rules to play Smash on a competitive level? You have to strip the game down to nothing in order to have a competitive aspect of it. While it is a fighting game, it was intended as a party game. You literally have to manipulate it to be a completely different game in order for it to be competitive. Fuck that.

Yes, you said it… By creating ways and rules to play Smash, you limit the entire fun of the game for a LOT of people.

My thoughts exactly. These people would have us believe that either these tourneys are set up like some fucking downs syndrome olympics where everyone is treated with kid gloves and no matter what happens, everyone wins something, then everyone hugs, says peace and love before going home. Or, they can’t even win anything unless the game is stripped bare of any of those annoying little features they hate so much… you know, the gameplay, strategy and tactics.

Ahhhh ok. I was just curious. I didn’t really play 4, but im gonna get back into it with 5.

Fighting game or not, Smash is pretty much the most broken thing ever since the game itself isn’t designed to promote competitive balance. Even then, these are real balance issues (since certain stages could favor certain characters), not just banning something because it makes the game “boring” or it “changes how the game is played.”

The fighting game community has standards that need to be upheld. Banning only when absolutely necessary (in other words, when a character is truly broken) is one of the most important ones.

Banning the giants sets a bad precedent, and it should be made known that this type of ban is looked down upon and shouldn’t happen again.

I Dont have a problem at all with some of you are saying. I dont have a damn thing against tournament standards…Seems like some of you think I do.

Nah. My argument is : Tournament rules are tournament rules(that particular tournament). What do you guys do when peeps host Marvel 2 low tier tournies? You either enter and play or dont…you dont cry and bitch about it. some of you have this “HARDCORE EVERYTHING!” type attitude…and that shit might possibly draw them away. Some people do go to tournies to just have fun. You could care less if they’re around? Fine…but that’s less potential money in your pocket.

If there’s a tourney with shit like the giants being banned that you dont like…Dont enter that shit…And when only 2 people show up…They’ll know next time to change those rules.

Having a tournament designated as low tier is very different than banning a character from competitive play.

It’s a tournament…And Certain characters arent allowed to play cause they’re stronger than the characters allowed to play…Maybe I’m missing a point here??

Low tier tournaments are a specific type of tournament.
Banning from all tournaments is a completely different ballpark.

It’s like saying, “There’s no guitar in this rhythm and bass group” versus, “There’s no guitar in music”

Well I’m not talking about tournies as a whole. I’m talking about the tournie you’re in at the moment. That’s just impossible.

All the tournaments that are worth anything are all under the same rules in terms of bans (e.g. NEC, ECC, Texas, and EVO all banned God Rugal and S.Akuma in CvS2), so unless you’re talking about some random tournament in bumfuck Idaho, which nobody cares about to begin with, then what I said applies. The only things that change are the best of, and whether it’s team structure, round robin, or double elimination.

The OP’s situation aint agreeing with what you’re sayin at all. It was EVO right? I’m guessing that tourney was “worth anything” if cats were flying out to get to that junk.

The fact of the matter is that He missed out on fun and money cause he didnt adapt. Those rules are frowned upon? Frown all you want. The people that did play prob enjoyed themselves. Frown all you want. Maybe next time they’ll change it up.
