Lets get something clear; saying that giants killed the game is complete bull. TvC died for reasons that don’t concern the giants, those being:
Its on the Wii
It featured an obscure roster
Capcom releasing Super and MvC3 during TvC’s first (and only) year
Ignorance
I will say that I am indifferent about the giants (though I may be biased since I play a natural counterpick team) and I don’t agree with their banning, but I can understand why they might not sit well with some of the other players. The giants warp how the game is played to such an extent that it doesn’t even feel like we’re playing TvC anymore. These references to Dhalsim and Guile make no sense as it is forgetting one crucial fact, and that is that they still function like normal characters. I can still combo/throw/mixup/mindgame these lameass characters but the same can not be said about the giants.
Some people are bringing up Yun/Chun’s 3S dominance but I ask, why? I don’t think people understand the reasoning in the ban on the giants. They are not characters that wreck the cast for free, in fact PTX had some absolutely terrible matchups, almost unwinnable when played right. But on the other side my short->short xx super still works against Chun correct? And because someone picks Yun doesn’t mean I have to completely change my gameplan to a lame runaway game correct? This is not the case against the giants because in most instances you are forced to play a runaway game or else get 50/50’d by PTX into a potential TOD depending on how much meter and Baroque he spends (all of which is un-Megacrashable by the way). And to top it all off, some characters have extremely skewed matchups against them (I’m talking 9-1) which can hurt tournament players through the “giants hussle”.
And let me reiterate that I have nothing against the giants and the people that play them, in fact their banning didn’t sit well with me but some of the facts are off. The original ban started in SoCal at one of our bi-weeklys and I’m not going to say any names but after a certain incident some of the regulars started complaining because they felt one of the entrants got screwed through a counterpick by the giants. In response, RoyalFlush banned the use of giants for his tourneys and since he runs the tourneys all by himself I think he has a right to make decisions on what goes on. (and frankly, I think he deserves to seeing as how hard he worked to get the scene going). Giants were never officially banned and had this game made it to Evo2k11 their use would have still been fair game. So this more or less was a softban on the giants in RoyalFlush run tourneys.
In the OP’s instance, banning of the giants would have brought in more players. I’m not saying that the decision was a fair one, but I think we can all understand where it is coming from. And since this is a player-run tourney, they kinda have a right to dictate what goes. Giants are not a case of “learn the matchup and suck it up” no matter how much I really want it to be. Its more or less “counterpick or die”. And no one bring up Phoenix please; “Look at how retarded this character is, it makes your retarded look tame” guess what? Its still retarded.
And let me reiterate this point one more time. Giants were not banned because they are boring. If this was the case then we might as well ban Saki as she is pretty much the TvC version of Trish. They were banned because they warped how the game was played to the point that even some of the game’s mechanics don’t function correctly against them.
You can’t blame a person for using a legal character.
You can blame a community for not banning appropiately. Oftentimes, that is done out of self-interest (people don’t want to waste the time they spent with their top tier character, and people like winning more then they like competition)
Again, I never agreed with it either but I just wanted to shed some light on why some people didn’t like them as there is a lot of misinformation going around about them (and this game in general) around here.
Pretty late responding to this, but I don’t even play giants and would have given the retort: “If Giants aren’t in I’m not entering”. The fuck is the point in playing someone if you can’t play them at their best, especially in a tournament?
Lightan was almost unanimously considered the worst character in the game, and while PTX was great he certainly wasn’t the best. PTX also had a few hard counters that scrubs were too busy whining about giants to bother learning. The big problem here is the poor communication in deciding if giants would be banned, especially when that was not the tourney standard anywhere except for Cali in like the last few months of the game’s life.
a) This should have been in the TvC section
b) The topic has nothing to do with the stated title. The giants aren’t even broken.
c) If the TvC community really refuses to play and support their game unless the giants are banned, then that makes the TvC community scrubby as shit and makes me ashamed that it was ever featured at EVO or other majors
To me, ZERO IS BORING. Dumb overpowered bastard who locks people down all day in blockstun.
To me, KEN IS BORING. Dumb keepaway character who throws out batarangs all day.
To me, TEKKAMAN IS BORING. Runout the clock by chilling at the top of the screen all day.
To me, RYU IS BORING. He’s just a regular guy.
If the game is BORING, then it’s the designers fault. Not the character, not the player. As such characters shouldn’t be banned and players shouldn’t be punished for playing the character the way they were designed to be played.
BORING is never a valid reason for banning.
There’s no reasoning to it, either.
It’s all a bunch of whining from a bunch of ADHD-riddled kids who get bored if there aren’t flashing lights or someone pressing buttons every .25 seconds. Which if that’s the case, competitive fighting games aren’t meant for them in the first place.
We’re not the Smash community.
I’ve always felt that the Giants hurt the game more than they create something different. Playing against a Giant just feels sloppy…can’t really think of how to describe it otherwise.
Sent and the giants played absolutely nothing like each other.
The only characteristic they shared was the fact that they were giant targets and had hella health.
Outside of that Sent was arguably the best character in MvC2 with the most options at any given time. His only ‘weakness’ was being an infinite dummy for most characters in the game.
People do what they can to preserve the fun when a community is small…If it means sacrificing a character that everyone deems “Cheap” then so be it. More people will be enjoying themselves and maybe comeback to play again.
It’s like having a get-together and playing against your friend who absolutly gets smashed by Geif…Geif might be your fave char…but you’re not gonna spd him for 20 matches in a row cause you know he is gonna have a good time.
Alot of this mindset is lost with the bigger fighting game communities…People being pro and overall more experience flying around.
An EVO side tournament is not a casual “get-together”.
We’re talking about so-called competitive gamers who identify themselves as TvC players, flying to all the way to Las Vegas to play the best TvC players in the world, and then refusing to play their game unless the giants are banned.
That’s fucking weak.
If a community can’t stick around and support the game without doing that, then the game doesn’t deserve to be played in the first place.
It’s like if they made galactus playable, sure maybe its not broken or overpowered, but wtf this completely turns it into a different game and I don’t like it. I wanted to play the game how it’s supposed to be, why does this exist? my shitty 2 cents
