Why Do People Play 'Broken' Characters:In Defense of Character Selection

For what it’s worth, I liked hearing both sides of the argument, and I actually learned something. I know Smash is a taboo topic around here, but it’s pretty petty when people give off the air that Smash players are ‘beneath’ other FG players. Both parties may not agree on everything, but there’s nothing wrong with having an on-topic discussion.

It does sound pretty idiotic until you realize I was not talking about accepting it with a competitive mindset. The point was to understand what the game is and if you decide to take it a little more seriously than what it was intended to be than don’t get mad when the developers decide to not cater to your wants. Thats like dissing Nintendo for not making Wii Boxing more realistic for the competitive crowd.

Of all the random things that happen in Smash Bros: lava covering the screen every other minute, F Zero cars hitting you at 900 MPH, fighter jets shooting at you on Corneria, stages that transform and can kill you with no assistance (not even mentioning items). Randomly tripping on the ground for 1 second is what turned you off and made the developers retarded? You forgot that Super Smash Bros was slow to begin with. But in any case, you’re right. Opinions are opinions so enjoy your day playing anything you like lol

Even a casual game like Halo could be played competitively because they let the game be played it was intended to be. They accept the issues of spawn points, and weapon spawns.

Even if they game is fucked up, it doesn’t mean it can be competitive.

Retard arguement.

But really? Melee WAS played with compeitive items, but due to random capsules killing players above thier heads at EXTREMELY low percentages made the game unplayable with items on. Capsules can’t be turned off in melee so they simply had to ban it, for the sake of the game. The game was REALLY enjoyable untill someone dies from like 2 capsules everygame.

Oh and just becuase Infinites (THOSE AREN’T EVEN FUCKING INFINITES) work in MvC2 doesn’t mean that they work in every game. I personally think that they work in melee, but brawl just becomes unplayable And falco running away forever? DId you REALLY compare that to storm D3v? THIS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USWnh3z33MM To fucking storm? That’s gambit shit, which was … BANNED. How much do you honestly know about the games in question?

If the Falco green shell glitch worked like the Gambit glitch It will kill Falco.

What Falco can do is stay at the edge of the boundary, out of reach of anything that can reliably touch him and without killing himself.

If you do that you will constantly take damage.

Furthermore, couldn’t someone toss an item upwards and smack Falco upside the head when he’s floating like that?

HMMMMM, no damage, or NOT DYING? I like my stats to look nice so yea. Why would anyone care about damage if they KNOW that they are not dying. How much do you know about the game honestly. I think you are talking out of your ass.

Its written in your ruleset in case of tie in lives the person with the least damage will win.

Well, it only increases up until 150%. If you have a stock lead it’s irrelevant whether you’re taking damage or not if your stock is preserved.

Actually, this kind of talk is also irrelevant, now that I think about it. I forgot about the “no stalling” rule. And no, I do not want to hear complaining about such a rule existing, thank you very much. That goes under enough scrutiny on Smashboards.

  • Bunny hood
  • Fire cracker
  • Smart bomb
  • Mega Mushroom

Many items have the potential to ko Falco at the top of the screen or at least end the jump infinite.

Let’s not pretend the other guy doesn’t have options.

How is it retarded? It’s pretty cleared that Smash wasn’t meant to be a normal tournament fighting game, and it wasn’t meant to be without items. You are turning a game unto something that it’s not. The item spawning is enough to suggest it’s not like a regular fighting game.

Game was alway enjoyable, just because it has random or something broken doesn’t mean the game sucked. XvsSF, MVC2,UMK3,etc are good example of “overpowered” shit that didn’t stop the competievely play of the game.

Also, why would Falco always have access to the turtle shell? It could happen, but it might not. It’s just a random factor, but it’s not something he always has access too.

…This really is pointless to argue. I’ve already made my points as to why randomness has no place in competition. I’m out.

Late 90’s Capcom fighters seemed to mostly be about abuse of glitches. I suspect this is why 3rd Strike came out so popular: in spite of its flaws, since it wasn’t all about abusing glitches at the high end. High level Smash Bros. seems to be a glitch-fest too. (Or abusing the open-ended physics.) Some people seem to like these types of games, and that’s cool.

The only traditional (Street Fighter clone) fighting game analogue to Smash’s random items I can think of is Samurai Shodown. (Unless you play World Heroes in death match mode.) The green shell thing is about the first time I’ve heard no-items being justified. The other is hearts that heal you, what, 200%? I can understand that. The exploding crates thing is silly, though. If you can do all those advanced movements and stuff, you can know not to start a combo on an item spawn point. I’m not sure where I’m going with all this, so that’s all I have to say about that.

ST had random input windows. Just saying.

its my favorite Gocart game of all time, my brother and i were so ultrahardcore about the game that at one point the tournaments that we entered were basically to see who of the 2 of us would be the series leader (though we also were being very jerkass between each other trying to make the other finish in last place )

i remember a funny story on one of the tournaments, on the last series. we were doing our usual stuff of trying to finish 1st while making the other get last, so the 1st race of the winner series was me 1st he on 3rd,
the 2nd one me 3rd he on 1st,
the 3rd was me on 3rd he on 1st
and the last one he on 3rd and me on 1st
so when we jumped to see who was the tournament winner, it was the guy who always ended on 2nd on all the 4 races

we usually do them on a movie theater that its close to my house, a friend of mine is the manager, so we do a lot of tournaments (racing, fighting games, soccer, even stuff like Guitar Hero) with the movie theater screens :smokin:

tbh, i dont know, at least here in my country ther arent tournament for blur that im aware of, plus i have not made one for the game, i dont know people who play it

iirc they were “random” because the game could drop your input frame when using the turbo option

Nope, they were actually random. I think throws did random damage or stun too.

They were very random… still are, actually.
Try this shit… Map 3 kicks to one button via FBA, and hop around with Blanka… 1/20, you’ll get kick.
Just sayin…

@Hecatom - Cool! I don’t have much input there.
Anyway… This thread’s dead… just sayin.

There’s a competitive scene for GT, it’s called real life motorsport. (seriously, drivers use it to practice off track).

This.

Also, speaking of random, Peacock in Skullgirls has a move ( :qcb:+:p:) that summons random items (all with different properties) to drop on you. Yes, that’s a character in a fighting game, designed for competitive players by competitive players, that has randomness built in (one item, basically Dio’s steamroller from JoJo’s has a 1/5000 chance of dropping).
