Why do people hate defensive/keeping-it-lame strategies in FGs?

That’s a really good example actually. I have a friend that plays magic and he hates anything that is blue, or any other kind of control deck. He is “100% aggro all the time!” There was a point in time were control decks were the best to use but now the meta has switched to a more aggro based meta, and he still bitches about control.

This is a very interesting topic. Anyways everyone is different, some people have great cat-like reflexes some people are patient and have good analytical skills(like me) some people have god-like execution and some people just want to beat the crap outta everything etc.
Zoning is annoying yes, but there is a difference between zoning and spamming that some people can’t even tell the difference between lol. Just like FlipBoy said, training isn’t just for combos, use it to understand your character, understand how to use his/her tools to deal with zoning, defensive and rush down players.

We never had this kind of discussions before SFIV.

It’s been over… 20+ years? People should just simply play the game. If it means using a certain character of your liking, a move, a game mechanic, glitch (if it does not break the game), a combo, or strategy then so be it.
SFIV… had good intentions but… :wonder:
Getting angry about other peoples strategies is… more or less… pointless. Imagine playing a chess game. Would you get angry at your opponent for moving his Queen around so much during much during the match? Every move should have a reason behind it…

…I doubt that, I really do. I mean I wasn’t around for the “good ol’ days” but bitching about stuff that forces you to change is pretty much human nature. And it’s not like the old school players are above bitching.

Just wishful thinking.

Let’s all improve our fighting style to deal with any situation in the upcoming future! (Real advice right there!)

:stuck_out_tongue:

good point i bin playing for a while and i think thats the key part im missing is jus sitting back and reading them but eventualy my patience runs short very i go in and i get punished or the opponent anticipates my move b4 i can his is there any way of practicing that at all or it jus cums natral??and are there any pratice methods to work on wat moves can be punished???

You can learn how to do it by setting that as your goal for the entire match, don’t even try to play a mixed game just learn how to hold your ground. don’t worry about winning or losing just worry about achieving the goal you set out to do which for you should be not running in recklessly.

If a turtle knows that you are eventually going to eventually break and rush in then they have no reason to move in on your, especially once they have a life lead. what happens is the turtle gets a life lead, and stays back the reckless player chases, usually get hit and give the turtle an even bigger life lead, making the reckless player more desperate causing them to make more mistakes and get hit even more.

As much as you are losing to the turtle you are also losing to yourself because you can’t control yourself enough not to rush head first into exactly the situation that they want you to be in. Not that you shouldn’t advance on them, but if you do it do it with an actual gameplan in mind and not because you are angry, frustrated, or just can’t stand “nothing happening” any longer.

And you can practice punishing moves by using the record function in training mode, just have the dummy do the move and then block.

I tend to do this myself as well. Except I think I do it 25% as well as you do, probably due to all that jumping around that I do. However, I do tend to adapt when in a pinch, but it’s not always clear cut and dry.

That said, I don’t hate players for playing defensive/zone - if a strategy works and it isn’t broken to where it’ll flatten even top tiers who play smart, then I’m all for allowing an opponent to use it. I mean, seriously - if everything in Street Fighter was supposed to work like Ryu and Ken, then it wouldn’t be called Street Fighter, it’d be called “Ryu and Ken: The Most Ultimate Hadouken”.

Yes, I’m aware that’s a corny name, but so too are scrubs who act like they make the rules in terms of how FGs must play. They’re just as corny, if not more so.

Ultimately, it comes down to who can think of all the options - and pick the best one to use for the situation - in the shortest amount of time that truly is the best.

Great FG players know that the reason they lost is not due to skill alone - it’s how that skill was applied and being out-thought by their opponent that gave them their loss. And truly great FG players will accept that loss without applying too much salt (AKA sportsmanship, which 95% of these scrubs lack).

Because people only see and enjoy cool flashy combos, that’s sad for them.

the same reason why people think that when you get into an actual fight, youre supposed to just go crazy (but with a bunch of unwritten rules)

it doesnt help that people think that fighting games are button mashers, so when they get hit with reality they whine.

I play Juri and I zone Damn near the whole cast. I’m lame as hell and proud. I’ve found my niche. I like to slow the game down and be patient…lame play has helped me understand the game better…I pick and choose when the “flow of the match” makes it a good decision to stay aggresive and when i feel i need to space the screen back out. I like knowing which normals to use when in footsies and not feeling like I have to always be on offense to be effective.

I use to zone w/ Ryu/Guile just to troll.
I eventually grew to like it…
It definitely is a frustrating playstyle to deal with but it’s very tense and tests both players patience and smarts.
Just play Ryu v. Guile. You’ll learn to appreciate zoning and learn that everything you do matters.
Hell, I had match w/ another Guile player (Mirror) the other day… Lamest fucking match I’ve ever played. 1st round he won clean. 2nd round I sneaked by w/ a time over. 3rd round last 7 seconds we both found openings and ended up in a Double KO…
During the whole match my brain was on overdrive and heart was pumping crazy…
Might seem boring to spectators, but for the competitor it’s a fucking rush…

I feel this is a big factor, it’s been stated in this thread a few times.
With SF4 brought in a bunch of people new to the fight streeting scene (including myself), and out of those there are a lot of people who think fighting games are all about BIG COMBOS BIG KNOCK OUTS YEAAAH.

Managing to: 1. Stay alive, and, 2. Still have more health, might look like a boring skill to learn - but it’s no easier to win by laming it out than it is to rush down and have the match decided by 2 counter-hits to max damage combos.

Also, these people can’t understand the fact other people can enjoy and have fun to play “lame”. To them, there is only one way to play “correctly” and to have a good time : offense & awesome combo. They are called scrubs i believe.

Just read comments on Youtube on popular channels (Yogaflame24, blackvegeta etc…) on a defensive match.

Rise of the necro-thread.

People don’t like defensive strategies because they’re effective. They are designed to make you feel like you’re in a vice, and you have no hope of winning. Some players and characters aren’t interested in seeing how well you’re able to do mixups, combos, and close-game aggression. Some just want to zone you the fuck out using pure fundamentals, and it’s beautiful.

thanks man you hit the nail on the head its exatlcy wat happens lol idk i get super ancy sumtimes specaily after i fck up on a combo to try to regain my momentum rush in and dont even know it myself

A discussion about Zoning and nobody has mentioned Nu-13 in Blazblue CT?

That bitch has to be one of the greatest zoners in FG history. I don’t recall anyone who didn’t despise her. I don’t mind zoning really, it just becomes a real thinking game. Until you play against Nu. I remember her having Full Screen Overheads that were safe. Legitimate Blockstrings anywhere on the screen, huge damage if anything hit you, and she was fast as hell with full screen dashes and shit.

That’s when I get mad.

Defense is meh. Surefire way to stop pressure is to stop blocking and take it like a man.
