Optional content? Not at all. There is a fine line between extra content and premium content though.
On the DLC debate:
Simple, we, as consumers, go out and purchase a $60 disc which then entitles us access to the content on the disc, this includes everything. Buying a car for example, just because you can’t see inside of the engine does not mean that it is not yours, it’s like saying ‘well, you wanna use your trunk eh? well thats gonna be a $10 charge, it may be part of the car you bought, but you aint got duh right to use it’. Content on the disc works the same way. If I hear the opposition correctly the DLC issue is akin to a company deciding “lets slap two new games together on the same disc, (MvC3 and AE for example) and lock one of them off. Then, later, lets charge another $60 fee to unlock content on a disc they already own!”
No mater what your stance is on the issue, you are straight blind if you can’t at least see the underhandedness.
No it doesn’t. That’s never been the case.
As for the car example: Cars with onstar or satellite radio units or similar services installed don’t necessarily provide either of those to you for free…
Uh…? How are those comparison even close to the DLC issue?
You’re spending several grand on a car and $60 on a new game. Why are you using those example in comparison to charging $5 for character unlocks?
People are blowing things out of proportion, just like his comparison.
itd be nice if the DLC characters were tourney banned…that way the “fanboys” can buy them and enjoy them, while the “hardcore” crowd can just focus on playing the game with the characters that game on disc on launch
problem?
People who want to use such a character in a tournament setting
As for the title question in particular: People hate on pretty much anything on SRK… though in general I think part of it is the standards they’re being held to.
DLC was planned for MKvsDC, but canceled due to the bankruptcy. Ed’s has always been successful using his formula of marketing and giving what his largest, money making, target audience (ie: casual) wanted. DLC appeals to that audience. the only difference this time around is he claims he’s also targeting the smaller, non-money making, audience (ie: competitive). of course, this remains to be seen. i think the reason why the response seems so different is because this is a recent development for Capcom players and a new formula for Capcom.
shoultzula and Bman have a point. one of the criticisms of DLC is that it gives developers a reason to withhold content.
no, consumers bought a license to use the software in a manner dictated by the company. EA is charging buyers of pre-owned games for continued online play. i wouldn’t be surprised if this happens to FG as well. gotta make that money.
Here’s the thing. No one here is going to want to pay for patches. If you want the companies to keep supporting the game with patches and added modes and such(which are incredibly expensive to create, test, have microsoft and sony test and approve, licensing fees in the tens of thousands, ect) the way the companies make their money back is by paid DLC. Whether it is on the disc or not is meaningless unless you feel the game is not worth the price without the locked content. I actually enjoy that fighting games are coming back and I want these titles to be successful so I support DLC even for stuff I don’t care about like Marvel characters/costumes. The reason is because I want games like this to keep being made. Gaming is a business first and foremost and there is nothing wrong with that.
After all the shit capcom has pulled, people simply just hate them. How often do you hear good news from capcom?
“SOrry we changed the buttons”
“sorry our netcode is still ass”
“Comeback mechanics? Perfect!”
“Sorry, even though there is obviously no problem with sentinels health, rather his damage, we nerf him now and make him free to his bad matchups”
“No spectator mode, no replay mode, we give shadow mode instead. You like? By the way we will never fix spectator mode, and we will always dodge questions about online.”
“Yaaaaaaay, the characters are on the disc almost 100% complete are being released around the same time we planned to have the game released in the first place. Capcom, we da best.”
“Portable games have spectator now. Capcom, we da best”
“We have spent all year hyping up a story, didn’t include it, and then left no explanation. Capcom, we da best”
“We hired Ono, and then didn’t fire him. Capcom we da best”
“Rather than hyping up AE, we will continue to lie becuase that is hype. Ono, da fucking best”
Almost every time Capcom opens they’re mouth, they are pissing people off. The very way they breathe pisses people off, whereas MK 2011 has gotten nearly nothing but good news all year. Peoples brains are basically wired to keep hating anything that Capcom says, because 90% of the time it will cause an upset. its just knee jerk reaction from what both companies have been putting on the table.
blame capcom. kratos wont be tourney-useable in mk9, jill and shuma and whoever else is coming it would be nice if they were treated the same
Nick, you’re usually good with your anti-DLC tirades, because they have meaning. This however was a crappy sentence, because it makes it seem that you don’t know why Kratos is banned but Jill and Shuma aren’t, and I would hope that isn’t the case.
Kratos’ problem is that he’s not in the 360. AFAIK there’s no plans to ban Skarlett, Kintaro, and the other guy from tournaments.
Expectations don’t help either. Following MvC2 ( and all the other old good capcom fighters ) people expect a lot more to start from MvC3, whereas MK9 is following… MKvsDC… there’s really nowhere to go but up from there.
I don’t see how charging for characters that are all ready on disc is anything but a big fuck you to your loyal costumer base.
I am more forgiving of whatever company makes MK because they suck…MK has been garbage since 3, so whatever follows, EVEN if it’s only halfway decent I will be happy.
Capcom was following MVC2 for gameplay, and SSF4 for options( Tournament mode, Spec mode, reply mode) and we get this shit called MVC 3… See my point?
I dont know about you guys, but I never got an update when the 2 DLC characters were “released”. But I was fighting t hem in matches that same day… “DLC” all right…
You got an update earlier that week for Shadow Mode, in which the rest of the Jill/Shuma code was put in. The same way how the Event Mode update (along with Sent nerf) was put in 3 days prior.
This. Lowered expectations.
i realize why kratos is banned. hes banned because hell be ps3 only, and 360 owners wont be able to practice with him or against him. this is merely an extension of that train of thought, with the idea being those who dont want to buy the dlc shouldnt have to. banning them from tourneys really wouldnt hurt anyone in the long run, those who learn shuma and jill will just have to deal with not using them, and those who dont have the DLC wont have to worry about being matched up against a character they have no idea how to fight.
just my .02, i know they wont be banned, but i think itd be a fair way to do things
Well that’d be good for all those who hate any DLC, as if Shuma and Jill were banned, along with any future DLC characters, none of us would ever buy them, which I assume is the main reason you’d want that (not that that’s a bad thing).
Though I’d rather people decide on their own not to buy DLC characters, instead of being pseudo-forced into not buying them. Makes for a better statement.
Besides, we won’t see a good Jill for months, and Shuma…so far the only really good one we have is Chen (sorry P.Gorath, I do like yours though), and his Shuma gets beat by simply blocking low.
Besides, using your train of thought, I can extend it further by banning ANY character in ANY game that’s unlockable in any way, so that way people who don’t want to waste time in single player unlocking people (damn you Seth…) don’t have to and can just play the game.
nah unlockables are on disc, so thats not forcing the player to spend money or do anything other than play the game, i dont have a problem with unlockable characters
This is so incredibly wrong, I don’t know where to start.
