I realize it’s getting cliche to say this, but I’m starting to get annoyed with the film industry plumbing comics for material.
It’s not so bad with superheroes, since the genre has ridiculously low standards to begin with, and the movies are usually at least partially new (if not so fresh) material such that they can be viewed as original stories. But I’d rather not see anymore attempts at direct conversions of comics a la 300 or Sin City. If a comic is good enough to deserve that kind of faithfulness, then it’s good enough to be left unmolested by well-meaning but misguided directors.
That said, Rob Liefeld’s characters are perfect for the movies. They’re generic, bland, and utterly interchangeable, so they lend themselves well to the formulaic storytelling that we mostly see in superhero movies.
A movie about a DC character that is not named Superman or Batman would be nice…
With Marvel LOL they are trying to make a movie about… EVERYONE… I’m not even sure it’s worth it to mention a character because sooner or later they will make a movie debut. Seriously they are in talks to make movies about a heck of a lot of characters. It’s just a matter of time. Shuma-Gorath might not be in a movie but Thanos will probably be featured in one sooner or later…
Reverse-wise I like the trend of canceled shows living on as comic books. For some properties it’s better because you can literally do anything in a comic book, so long as an artist can draw it you really don’t have to worry about a limited TV budget for special effects. So far there’s Buffy, Angel, OG Star Trek series and there’s supposed to be a Veronica Mars comic too. X-Files also, but I’m not sure if it will pick up where the last movie left of. So, I’d love to see -
Married… With Children
Beans Baxter
The Black Donnellys
Arrested Development
La Femme Nikita
Off the top of my head…
Can’t think of any movie franchises I’d like to see as comics. Maybe James Bond, though he did start off as a character from a novel series. And at the same time, I’d rather a comic follow the character from the novel series and not the movies. Eh maybe just a James Bond Jr. comic, one based on the old cartoon. "He learned the name from his uncle James now he’s aaaaaaair to the name. JAMES BOND!" :looney:
i wanna see luke cage…and im not talking current verdsion…i want this to be hella spoofy old school 70’s blaxloitation and yes i wanna see the dr.doom luke cage scene.
oh and i want my fucking iron fist movie…you have no idea how long ive wanted to see this happen.
This is a little far afield of the topic, but I’ve read a few of the original James Bond novels and they really are terrific. Anybody who’s into solid spy action ought to check them out, with the caveat that they’re closer to Craig Bond or the Bourne movies than the bulk of the James Bond film series. They’re harder and less cartoonish.
Yeah, someone once told me about how in one of the books there was a great scene where James Bond was lying on the ground on the beach and when he woke up there was a huge poisonous scorpion on top of him. So James couldn’t move a muscle otherwise the scorpion might bite him and kill him on the spot! So the scorpion slowly worked it’s way up to James’ face.
And do you know what the scorpion started doing? It started drinking the sweat off of his face! Talk about suspense! :wow:
Ian Flemming’s James Bond books have been on my ‘get around to reading sooner or later’ list for some time now. A lot of the movies are bad, but I’ve always liked the character. Connery and Moore are my favorite Bonds. Haven’t seen the new guy yet.
Alan Moore wrote a hilarious James Bond in The Black Dossier. It’s been many years since I’ve read any of the Fleming novels but I think I still have some of them packed in a box somewhere.
Back on topic, I don’t really care if my favorite comics ever get made into movies. Most of the time, I would probably prefer that they weren’t, just to avoid tainting the name. For every The Dark Knight and Iron Man, there’s two or three Catwomans or Daredevils… Also, I’m a comic book elitist. I usually don’t want to read comic book adaptations of movies (the lone exception to this is Sano’s copy of the Street Fighter adaptation), and I wouldn’t lose any sleep if they never made a movie adaptation of Watchmen.
Sleeper would make a damn good trilogy of movies, though. They could even get Tom Cruise to play Holden. Wait, I think that might actually happen!
Bone would make a fine animated movie, too. Probably a trilogy or series of movies. But that would be, like, probably the greatest animated movie based on a comic book EVER.
theres always one guy that i thought have been missing from the movie sceene. if a movie , (a serious movie) should be made about him it has to be oscar stuff. im of course talking about Captain America !!! i would really like to see a serious blockbuster movie be made about this marvel icon !!! it has so muuch potential , but i also see a lot of places it could go wrong.
well I hope they don’t screw up the cap movie.
Although one error could be casting will smith as cap because there aren’t enough blacks in the avengers. So I’ve heard…
I’m hoping they turn the Cap flick into a screwball buddy comedy starring Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Jackie could be Cap and Tucker could be Bucky. It’d be great! Just try to picture Jackie screaming, “You think this A on my head stands for France?!”
It’d be more like, “You sink dis A on my forehead stand for French?!”
I really don’t get why people show such disdain whenever theres movie based on a graphic novel of some sort. You would think with the success of Sin City and 300, people would just stop bitching and enjoy the upcoming Watchmen and The Spirit movies.
I agree, being what I consider a pretty big Miller fan. However, I feel that if a comic is held in such high regard that directors should respect the work that already exists. It seems as though whenever they go and make one of these films, usually by dumbing down the plot and adding a dash of gratuitous violence, that they are somehow improving upon something that should never have been tampered with. And to me as a fan, that’s just fucking insulting. So now you have guys like Zack Snyder directing Watchmen that claim to respect the story so much that no detail is omitted from the film, an absolute conversion, which a lot of people think is super. I think at that point we have to ask ourselves, if every little detail is that damn important then why are we so eager to see it chewed up, partially digested, and regurgitated onto the silver screen?
