umm ok…apparently i have a ego…thats news to me. either you mis-understood me or something but i wasn’t trying to insult you…it was quite the opposite. again, asking that question was rather redundent since Jamp had just explained its usage not even 1 page ago, not my fault you don’t read the contents in the thread~ moving on…
im happy to answer questions, and im sorry if i offended you but again i clearly stated that was not my intention…im willing to squash this if you are.
Yeah dude I have read the last 5 pages and the first 3 in an effort to keep up. I may have missed something but yeah I’m not lookin’ for a fight, so it’s squashed.
Not posting this in the video thread, as I feel that this isn’t something people should learn from, but here’s a set I played with a friend’s Rolento/Ryu team:
A few excuses beforehand: These are my first matches of the day, and we’re sitting on horrible chairs with cramped armrests for some reason, so my execution is absolutely SHOT.
Otherwise, Poison vs Rolento feels absolutely ridiculous to me. I know there’s more to learn, especially for me, but it seems like he outclasses her in every area. He can get in and out when he pleases, everything he does is safe, he outpokes her, she can’t anti-air him reliably, he out-damages her, etc. I feel absolutely hopeless until I can squeeze in a boost combo and take a chunk off of his life with Lili. It’s beyond being outplayed too, I lose to mediocre Rolentos pretty terribly too. I feel like I can somewhat stand a chance with Lili because of her counter and Andante to deal with his bullshit, but man, getting her in is a challenge.
I feel pretty good playing with Poison until I play someone really good or someone who just refuses to respect her. :S
Also, please excuse my FloeFace. I don’t look this dead usually, just when I’m getting mauled by a good player playing a silly character.
@ trike, glad to see you play, unfortunately you were not on top of your game…however there are a few things to note.
SFxTK or any fighting game for that matter you have to respect the opposing characters strength. you were not doing that at all, what i mean by this is…you never try to beat Rolento at his own game i.e. trying to out poke his standing jab, your going to lose most of the time by trying to go at him like that. you dont run into Vega’s Cr. :mp: right? same thing applies here. Rolento has weaknesses, Rolento players talk about them all the time, try exploiting them(Poison actually can). Not to try and nit pick your too back but you tech roll at the worse possible times as well, those are the times you should have just got up normally and take the mix up as you mite have had a better chance to block it.
you did do well in other areas so that is something to be commended on like when you did nail her links, did good jump ins and did pretty good punishes(if your going to do max damage with Boost Combos in the future just use J. :hp: , close :hp: , then launcher so its around 200+ damage before 50% damage scaling) you did block well, you just don’t see throws coming and didn’t adapt to his setups…he did the same set up more then a few times to you, but like you said you had a bad day so no need to make it worse right?
You dont really need any more lab time, you just need to get more experience i guess, start grinding it out with more people~ we all help each other get better in the end. the only thing i say you need work on is knowing match ups…that will help you in the long run, as it just seems you dont know how to deal with Rolento…once you know his set ups and his limitations, you shouldnt be getting mauled anymore…unless its combofeind then i cant help you there, but all jokes aside you did well~
we can all learn from your example too so bare that in mind as well. we should all critique our work as it will help us grow strong(well I think so), as we may learn from each other, im just disappointed my net has gotten slower so until that gets fixed no OnlineWarrior for me…
I was getting frustrated, haha. His stupid pogo stick mixup tends to beat/trade with st.MP and cr.HP and I don’t really have the reactions to punish it with KbaG, as I’ve never mained a character whose go-to anti-air was a DP, so whenever he did that and I did happen to block, I get rewarded by an endless string of jabs that are ridiculously hard to DP/Alpha Counter, so I’d only get a throw tech if I was lucky. So I just started mashing standing jab into boost combo. HEH. I think I tried backflipping while I was mid-screen, but he eventually slid that on reaction.
What exactly are Rolento’s weaknesses? I know that his defense isn’t great, but it’s incredibly hard for me to get anything going with Poison, especially since I’m trying to limit my use of LMT.
Duly noted on the boost combo punish. That never really crossed my mind.
My internet at the moment isn’t suitable for online play, so I’m actually a pretty hardcore training mode monster right now. Links aren’t really hard for me, especially when I’m warmed up and not in a horrible chair restricting my arm movement. :S Not that her links are anything difficult in the first place. I only get to play against other people once, maybe twice a week, so yeah, I have matchup problems pretty hardcore.
It’s unfortunate, because I actually do well against characters that Poison can actually play footsies with. :T Maybe I can squeeze in a few matches with someone else next time. Thanks a lot for the critique.
@Trike, well I’ve been trying to level up my game too so its only natural that i would attempt to give some critique(also being a Art student helps :P) but if match ups are a Problem then go to the source, that characters forum. There usually tons of info about the character there, heck even asking simple odd ball questions can tip you in the right direction.
I don’t know much about rolento but i’ve beat a few good ones by just beint patient. I don’t react to his pogo mix ups, i just block them. I respect his standing jab, and i get on his case on every knockdown because without meter there isn’t much he can do, my game plan is to train the rolento player into tech rolling then messing him for it. by doing alot of sweeps and throws(failed or successful) will get to them if the pressure is good because guessing on wake up is never fun when Poison can make it down right annonying with :mp: or :hp: Aeolus edge. Thats my general strategy, Jamp, and others have their own ways that mite fit to your playstyle too so looking at how other people tackle a similar situation also goes a long way.
I have alot to learn myself and I’ll add more to my other two threads(team synergy and Gems) as things change like if Gems ever become legal then i’ll invest alot of time into them, and team synergy is something im actively working on and if anyone have any deep insight or want to share their teams then your more then welcome(but please attempt to explain why your team works…thank you).
Rolento has pretty much no defensive options once he’s pressured. His invincible reversal is pretty bad, and he can’t really backdash out of trouble. His mix-ups outside of the corner are somewhat easy to react to, so once you get used to the match up pogo shenanigans stop being so effective and he has to resort to frame traps. His frame traps are pretty predictable as well, just don’t press buttons if he’s jabbing, don’t worry about getting thrown because his walkspeed and dash are ass, and once you block a rekka do a AC to get him out of you. Things get tricky in the corner though, he has some nasty cross-up Mekong gimmicks, and his damage output doubles so every mistake hurts way more.
Just block without pressing buttons and be ready to DP if he ever tries getting up in the air. Rolento can’t really open people up outside of the corner if they do nothing, and once Poison gets a knockdown on him he’s pretty much dead.
I’d like to compound on AC’s my fellow mad gear peeps. Please is you arereading this get to know AC a bit more intimately Alpha counter is a godsend. And it neaxt to nullifies the pressue situation bt knocking oppnents away full screen. Not calling it the end all to opposing pressue, but when used correctly will save our lives. It’s worth the meter, and this is coming from someone who is generally stingy with meter. I run poison/Rolento and a few matches I rarely see anyone re act to that nigh fatal flaw (imo) especially with rolentos tat overly PC.
Seize the opportunity to use WOL more on confirm bnb, or run Marduk as a secondary his armor and AA grabs makes rolento look like a clown rather than a commando.
As far as rolentos are concerned, I can outright clobber pogo or knick it if trails a little behind me. With KGB (forward) but don’t quote me on that most of the time I’m running clock or sitting ready to jab on sloppy links. If I caught it that means the rolento in play may be questionable in terms of skill.
None of us will be losing to scrubby rols once you know them flaws. Or even better knowing the flaws of your opponent.
His dash is terrible. Rolentos cadc at your own risk online ( you will be shoryu’d)
First off, I’m just gonna agree that Rolento is dumb.
few notes VS Rolento:
this guy is one of the only characters where Rolling is bad, he has an easy OS (nj into pogo~hold forward) where if you stayed put he’ll go forward and if you rolled he’ll go backwards and follow you, its also hella ambiguous coz his j.MK has a hitbox on both legs.
if rolento does pogo mid a jump and you’re close to him, if you neutral jump you should be able to completely avoid the mixup, you can punish him too if you have a nj normal that hits both sides (Chun, Juri, Asuka etc). He’s safe if he goes backwards (unless you have a divekick).
Dont try to block his shit after pogo, people saying his mixups are easy to see havent played good Rolentos yet, he has easy 50/50 setups where he can hit front or cross up and its impossible to tell which side he’s on.
Unless its gonna be over his head, never jump in on Rolento, just dont… his s.MP will stuff your shit for free.
Rolento’s frametraps and blockstrings are very meh, especially outside of walk up throw range, just keep blocking and dont press buttons.
once he gets predictable (usually jab jab jab c.MK) just smash through that c.MK with a launcher or a KbG. he’ll stop doing that shit after a few of those.
Lastly, if the Rolento wants to he can be a total bitch and just keep doing qcb+P (the roll back) all day after getting a life lead, he can easily waste 30 seconds just doing that shit.
Just get in that ass and stay on him with pressure as he doesnt really have a GTFO move.
You’ll notice most the notes arent really Poison specific as most my Rolento exp has been with my main team (Vega/Asuka)… should still give you an idea of how to approach the matchup.
The thing about tech rolls is that they only work on soft knockdowns. Hard knockdowns are rollable, so any combo ending in KbG or WoL means that they can roll out of the corner. But what if we don’t give them a knockdown they can roll out of?
Basically, I’ve been trying to keep corner pressure without knocking them down at all. Instead of doing a full combo into WoL in the corner, I only do the first two hits or combo into LP Aeolus Edge to keep them standing. If they try to neutral jump, I can tag them out of it using her s.:mp:. They try to jump over me, then it’s cl.:hk:
EDIT - Ugh, it’s pretty gimmicky since the second WoL actually leaves her unsafe on hit, so it’s complicated to use against characters with decent reversals. Abuse against characters that don’t, however.
We really should get a character strategy thread up…
Vs Rolento:
What others said. I mainly block, AA, and punish. If Rolento’s coming in from afar, c.HP or KBG will beat him in the air. If he’s close and gonna do pogo stuff, just block (easier said than done, but better than pushing a button). If you know his pogo habits, jump back fierce to get away and open the space.
Once you get him settled on the ground you can poke quite nicely with cr.MK buffered, just gotta be aware of his slide. If he’s up close though, just hold down-back and wait for the jab jab jab jab jab jab jab cr.mk rekka. It’s after the rekka that you need to decide your next move. Most the time he will pogo crossup after one blocked rekka, in which case you can block or jump back fierce. If he EVER does 2 blocked rekkas, punish with KBG to knock him full screen and go back to your zoning/AA game.
If you do get a knock down on him, pressure the hell out of him, he has nothing but an unsafe and crappy ex move that hits forward. May even consider using a super to kill off his gray life for time out wins.
You ever feel like taking a risk of doing EX LMT when you see them doing couch blocking on a series of jabs? sometimes I get it if I don’t then I bait out a reversal. or jump
Still having major problems connection basic combos (having trouble connecting cr.lp, cr.lp, cr. mp, rekka) can get the first three to connect but when do I input rekka? as she’s hitting them or pulling away?
Does the rekka type have to be specific also?
Since I’ve done cr.lp, cr.lp, cr. mp does the rekka have to be Hp? I’ve tried this and all it does it to fierce punch and then launch.
why are you using cr. :mp: instead of cr. :mk: ? and it shouldn’t matter which rekka you use(since they are all pretty much identical anyways) you still get some time to visually confirm if your hitting your opponent from the to crouching jabs, the rekka part will eventually come natural, it just takes practice to get into muscle memory~
Thanks, cr. :mk: does help but for some reason I am finding it so much easier to do > cr :mk: > Rekka but when I do cr. :lp: x2 > cr :mk: Rekka won’t come out… Gah! Did not have this problem with Nina I’ll keep trying and hopefully, I get it soon.
Maybe I need to see it in real time or in a replay/input display?
I’m on PSN at the moment if anyone is around
PSN: pelvic
Expanding a little bit on this. Finishing the combo in WoL is not that good, however finishing the combo into LP Aeolus Edge serves the porpuse I was looking for quite well. c.:lk: c.:lp: c.:lp: c.:mk: xx LP Aeolus Edge does around 150 damage and leaves you in a somewhat sweet spot where they can’t get out of ther corner at all. Trap them if they block the string by leaving gaps between the normals or by cancelling into HP Aeolus Edge, which will tag them if they press any buttons or jump. I still need to work more on this type of non-knockdown corner pressure though, but so far it’s pretty promising.
I intended to, I just got somewhat lazy since it’s pretty much one of the hardest threads to keep up to date
We also need to save all this tech we’ve been posting here somewhere, like making the combo thread a strategy thread as well.
So far I haven’t tried since I think they should be able to react to the EX flash and block high. Still, a blocked LMT is a free frame trap so not all would be lost.
