Whip it, whip it good - The Poison GD Thread

I see Poison being one of those characters that use the fireball as bait(since it dies out) . Kinda like how i use Nemisis in UmvC i bait with the rocket and then catch them by surprise.

her fireball can be used in many different ways, it has multiple applications, however its a main component in her wake up game. she can effectively bait out un-innvulnerable wake up reversals and tech rolls by using the Fierce version of her Aeolus Edge. She can also use it to jump in on opponents as well, and setting up tricky block strings. It’s one of the better projectiles in the game and it doesn’t even go full screen.

I think her best normals are going to be cr.hp, st.mp or st hp because they push your opponent far away, then cr.mk.

For her special moves i think her best ones will be

Whip of love to apply pressure on her opponent. The recovery on it reminds me of rose’s. If its spaced just right you might be able to get a counter hit off your next normal.
Lk and Ex Love me tender because the light version seems to be safe on block or very difficult to punish so we can also use that to set up some counter hit comboes and ex Love Me Tender to chase down back dashing or run in opponents.
Finally i think her lp Aeolus edge will be a very good tool to set up some meatie combos or tricky set ups. Your opponent won’t know if you’re about to do an overhead, walk up and throw, or cross you up.

I believe her main issue will be from the fact that she may or may not be able to take pressure. (But she has 3 ways to escape so idk.)

Gems:

I think the best gems for her would be the meter efficiency gem and a power gem. I’m saying a eff gem would be good for her because she throws out a lot of projectiles to gain meter and with that gem she’ll be able to gain massive amounts of meter for her partners and a power gem so when she comes in she’ll be able to deal a bit of damage to her opponents while her partners heal.

Ehm, the Poison player just did random stuff and nothing really interesting imo. Not even a decent combo, just LMHH shit. ^^

Its better than watching people on stream lol.

She has five, actually. There’s her backdash, her backflip, her DP, tech rolls and raw launcher to beat low attack pressure. And that’s not considering the possibility of properties like throw inv on some of her moves / EX moves that we don’t know about.

Her defense is really solid, IMO. Though that doesn’t mean we’ll be able to get out of pressure for free, since without FADCs you have to commit to the risk of mashing things - and thank God for that.

Poison’s Crouching Jab and Short are good hit confirms, only Close Standing Strong is good, you can’t do much with far standing strong. you can’t cancel out of far standing fierce from my knowledge anymore either, but it has good reach but bad recovery. Crouching Fierce is good for anti-air, but I know of any other use outside of linking it from Crouching Strong. Standing Forward is if not her best footsie tool outside of her Crouching Forward.

Fierce version of Aeolus Edge is what your thinking of, Jab or LP version is her small slow fireball version that goes about mid-screen. Like you said you can use it in meaty situations by forcing them into blockstun if they get up normally. You can use it to bait out forward tech rolls as they visually see it, you can take advantage of this by back dashing or ever walking up and throwing them as tech rolls are not throw invulnerable in later frames.
Interestingly enough, you can set up a meaty jab version of her Aeolus Edge after her backthrow(midscreen), doing this after the throw they will catch the tail end of the fireball, if they roll you can throw or OS Crouching forward or meaty Short/LK version of Love me Tender on reaction to the tech roll.

In recent builds of the game you can use Love me Tender similar to Adon’s Jaguar kick, however other practical uses include punishing mid-screen wiffed normals, or getting over lows in footsies to score a nice counter hit, keep in mind if Love me Tender hits, you can score a combo off of it, however the damage from the throw is a hefty reward on its own.

Poison can deal with pressure and with meter has a get out of jail card(EX kiss by a Goddess). She can run away and play it lame with correct spacing and zoning with well placed fireballs and command flips, her dashes allow her to run away if needed to so the tools are there. her Cross over Counter is Kissed by a Goddess so thats also another thing to think about, you can either time it or try to mash it out yourself…they both cost 1 bar~ lolz

I cannot wait to destroy FADC happy Ryu’s in this game…

Its more situational wouldn’t you agree? Dealing with Wakeup/Okizemi is different from dealing with blockstrings and offensive pressure of that nature, or a character with better footsie tools then herself. everything would have to be taken accounted for…

on wake up, sure back dashes or her command flip are good options, i wouldn’t bet on of her DP’s unless its EX and even then I would use it sparingly like i do in KOF(but thats me as a player). Tech rolls you gotta be careful as you just seen the wall of text for situational set ups for those above~ but are almost a no brainier in the corner. Generic Launcher is good during footsies when you can read your opponent, but like with Focus attacks, I see that some Launchers are better then others, Poison’s seem rather good so I’m a believer in it(Gotta use it against Ryu’s and Sagat’s Low Forwards!).

During blockstrings or ones with holes in them, she can do Cross over Counter, or to a lesser extent mash out EX DP, I’m also a believer in her Crouching short as it can be a good OS in those times to beat out tic throws or other annoying things during those pressure moments. Being able to OS Crouching Shorts to Crouching Strong/Forward is beyond good for Poison…as it can open up alot of things. notably canceling into Aeolus Edge for the push back or Love me Tender for counter hit/punishing low’s over even mixing up after its blocked with an overhead or throw…the options are there Jamp.

That’s pretty much how I played her at NYCC…and this was before I knew the properties of all her moves. Incidentally, I also play Nemesis in Marvel 3, so I get the fireball analogy. If my rockets don’t get them, Deadly Reach or something else will.

And I’m quite glad for that. Not only does Poison seem solid enough to compete at a pretty high level, but she isn’t so easy mode that I won’t have to watch myself, thereby breaking myself of my bad habits during a match (which I admit I have a few of).

^Cool Man u know what i mean

Coming from a Rose player, how do you think I should approach Poison? What skills would transfer over, what would I need to work on?

I know its hard to tell since the game isn’t out yet, but are there any obvious strength’s Poison had where Rose had weaknesses or vice-versa?

I’m going to do a comparison.

Poison
-Has about 5 ways to get out of pressure.
-Good normals
-Can Deal Decent damage
-Decent walk speed
-Possibly Decent pressure game
-Better fireball

-Cons… don’t know yet

Rose
-only 2 ways to get out (I am not counting soul throw for it is an iffy move.)
-Good normals
-Decent walk speed
-Great pressure game

-Slow fireball that can get punished quickly
-Cannot deal with pressure very well.
-Low damage

I think you’ll transition to poison very well they both have basic gameplay so it shouldn’t be too difficult.

honestly, i used Cammy, Cody, Guy, and Adon, and she feels alot abit of them so i dont know.

Edit: but in truth, shes closer to a shoto like Jamp has been saying(even though the idea of Poison being anywhere related to Ryu makes me cringe…) so starting with just using basics is the best way to approach her…play lame, get a feel for her, understand how her moves work, go from there. I think thats the best advice i can give…the only thing i can say of being a rose player you can take advantage of is Poison’s forward dash(being pretty good) but her back dash is where its at.

We need to break all rose players from back dashing. Anyways we should use the cr.mk fireball feint into a overhead for our mix ups.

She still cannot combo into overhead am I correct? If so then I’ll be playing a lot of footies and fireball throwing to keep the opponent where I want them. Using LMT to gain some advantages in the footies game which I think will be a big advantage if used correctly against characters like Ryu, and others who heavily relie on lows in their footies.

Since cody likely won’t be in soon I’m thinking of placing Poison with Steve or Paul; a couple of hard hitters who look like they can deal with my opponents pressure and turn back around on them. Not sure where to go with my poison team now; really I had my heart set on Cody/Poison day 1 but now I’m having an Identity crisis.

I cant comment really on that really, hahaha!

but i think it would be better to do what the CPU was doing and pressure/mixup after LK. Love me Tender, either that or after HP. fireball. Maybe the Feint is good…, im not a huge fan of it yet but that can change~

right now im just thinking of set ups and tag combos with King and Kazuya…Cammy is my go to SF character but i can think of anything note worthy for her atm.

Edit: @ Reason4U, for right now that seems to be the case with her overhead, however you mite be able to link from it on normal hit(no one has tried it really) you can get a combo from it if counter hit(ground bounce) but also take into consideration you can use EX Love me Tender, do not input the next Kick button and link into a combo after the initial hit(it has pretty good hit stun) thats another option~

I really only want to play Poison because she has a fantastic ass. I feel the same way about Juri.

lol this

I’ve been oddly entranced by Poison ever since seeing her walking animation in 3rd strike.
But since then I’ve really got into the character’s “violent” personality. Same reason I really like Vega.
