Hey, guess who I am.
OH MY GOD RYU IS SO OVERRATED! He reminds me of Cerebella in Skullgirls even though they aren’t even remotely the same.

What are Ryu`s weaknesses?
Not so much a weakness as Ryu doesn’t truly excel in any area other than having one of the best wakeups in the game thanks to DP/FADC. But his footsies and fireball and frame traps are all above average but not amazing. His frame traps aren’t as good as Cody, Sakura, or Cammy. His fireball game isn’t as good as Sagat or Guile. His footsies aren’t as good as Chun Li or Gen. However in all of those areas he is competitive and having such a well rounded set of tools not only lets him be played in a huge variety of ways but also means that he tends to have less unfavorable matchups (though it also arguably means he has less outright favorable matchups as well.)
At least that is what I think.
Ryu’s wakeup actually isn’t “one of the best”. It, like most anything about Ryu, is just solid. But nothing like Akuma, Bison or Fei where you just have to guess because there’s so many options. The SRK just forces you to be honest.
And agreed. Ryu has enough to win, but Ryu never wins the game for you, like, say, Cammy or Akuma or someone like that might. He gives you the ability to do that but his offense is so ungimmicky it’s all up to you to open the opponent up and take the game. There’s one thing Ryu does excel though if you ask me: His armor break game is excellent. quick EX fireball, armor break tatsu, j.mp, sps, he has it all pretty much. But rest is good enough to work with but not in the least oppressive.
You can’t “think” Ryu has one of the best wake ups in the game unless you “think” a fourth of the cast can be generalized as the best. One can only assume you are in fact not thinking when you follow that up with the claim his footsies, fireballs, and frame traps are only above average.
Ryu’s cr.MK is practically the golden fucking standard. It’s even better now because his normal FBs hit for 10 more damage. He has good normals to fake out his attacks with. cr.MP is practically the best normal in the game when it comes to shit you can throw out with no fear what so ever. His sweep is 5f - one of (the?) fastest in the game, it lasts a while at four frames and goes pretty far to boot. His walk is basically the only thing average in the footsies department.
Only four characters have better actual fireball games…and Ryu wins the match ups despite that. How many characters actually get a “no charge needed” EX fireball that starts up in 12 frames and is +1 on block point blank, anyway?
There are six, maybe seven characters that have a better frame trap game. Ryu hits pretty damn hard now too. He has access to one of the easiest, most effective frame trap tools in the game. He has a great variety of gaps to choose from, 3f normals, chainable attacks, a (admittedly slow) normal that moves him forward and is 0 on block, +4 on hit. He can choose to push you out safely, he can push you to the corner, or he can combo into a hard knock down. He gets almost any attack he wants on his counter hit EX fireballs. Nobody has a frame trap game like Ryu does that can zone and play footsies as well he does.
:nono:
Ryu’s wakeup game is only good if you attempt to attack it linearly, or are forced to because your character sucks.
No matter how much they nerf, buff and change characters in the game, you fuckers will always be complaining.
Every character that’s not your own is broken or useless and has no point being in the game.
Don’t get why people complain about Ryu of all characters, I mean we all agree Ryu is mostly play by noobs, good Ryu players are rare, even the good ones are predictable and you always know what to expect from a Ryu player.
It might just be the stigma of online Ryus. Due to lag and input latency,a lot of his tools and set ups become much more difficult to deal with than they actually are offline.
you really dont get it?
he’s fuckin everywhere
if you play competitively, the only match ups you’re gonna learn is x vs ryu and not much else
if you play for fun, you’re going to be bored out of your mind because he’s popular and monotonous
insert video of damdai smashing dsp ssf4 launch party with ryu
i agree…this game almost dive downward to the abyss of monotonous,
because of we keep bumping with Ryu.
gladly there is ryu haters…who pick other non-shoto character as their main,
which had made online game and not to mention FGC colorful again.
Ryu fanboys should thank to us (the Ryu haters), unless they
prefer mirror match 24/7 online.
I don’t know what do you mean by fun, I get fun when I beat the shit out of my opponent and Ryu players are generally free so I won’t complain.
Plus there is this insane upside to Ryu where he actually makes some goddamn sense, plays a fundamentals game. Not skid noise, skid noise “TORTII~!” (Have “fun” countering the spastic luchadore folks)
As a pretty new player (this is my first fighting game ever, but I’ve played almost 400 hours and 2000 online matches) this is why I actually love encountering Ryu. I can understand that people who have been playing the game for a long time like the enormous roster and 10 different special moves per character that all have to be countered in weird ways etc etc… but for a totally new player, the time investment required before you get to the level where you at least have some idea of how the game is played can be somewhat off-putting. After you’ve put 400 hours in a shooter you’ve got a pretty good idea of how to play the game. 400 hours into SSF4, and I still regularly get annihilated when I face a blanka or el fuerte who spams a move I’ve never encountered before.
But place me against Ken or Ryu or in a mirror match, and the game suddenly becomes a lot more interesting because I at least know what the other guy is doing and what I can do against it.
Because its boring.
Playing the same character in 70% of the ranked matches having to slowly play footsie/fireball wars, then when you get near them hoping the don’t mash shoryuken(they will).
you’re really fine with vsing ryu 24/7?
you must be really easy to entertain
Ryu is incredibly boring, and incredibly safe. His priorities are ridiculous. He has NO weaknesses, there is NO situation where you can put Ryu in which he will have problems. Add to that the fact that he is played by everyone, all the time… it makes the game so dull.
However since Infiltration won Evo now the PSN has been infested with cheap, dive-kicking, sweeping and jump-back-air-fireballing douchebag Akumas, which makes me long for the good old days… when all there was was Ryus.
All of you who play online all the time, don’t you just LOVE when the faceoff screen pops up and you see you’re up against a competent Abel , Makoto, Dan, Dee Jay instead of a shotohomo? I love it man.
Exactly why people use him…
That and he’s the main character fighting for good and defeating evil and wants to become the Pokemon mas-… woops got a bit carried away there but yeah that’s why…
Also because Daigo uses him and everyone that has B rank or higher Ryu think they’re Daigo…
Also most people will start with Ryu as a beginner character, think of switching then most of them will find it too difficult to not use a shoto and just stick to Ryu.
He’s just easy to use… IMO, even though he’s low on the tier list he is probably the most balanced character in the game.
He can stay back, rushdown (shitty but still possible), footsies, no vortex but still pretty good… I guess his fireball pressure in the corner could be a vortex?
"facepalm"
man this thread became shit
if you wanna hate ppl channel it to something that makes sense ( viper, cammy, akuma…)
