Thank you for sharing. And everybody else who mentioned the personal stuff they’ve gone through, too.

This lured me out of lurking status. I’m Nick (xbox live:nickfullspec), 25 from London UK.
I love Street Fighter and I lost my Dad to cancer this year, so that really touched me - well done man, for winning and for sharing.
John, I have been touched and inspired by your story. Right now I am currently having my own personal battle with cancer and hearing how your father is dealing with his has inspired me to go on no matter what. I wish you and your family the best during these hard times and congratulations on your performance at EVO.
the best a man can get!..@cvs2

Wow, I just read Sirlin’s article on the Evo tourney and it brought me back here. Yours is a truly amazing story and an even more amazing father. It might sound kind of stupid, but you’ve really inspired me to be better than I am, both at my scrubby (I know I am) SFII playing style and at my life, the big picture.
Best wishes to you from San Bernardino, CA.
This.
Wow am I late to the party. Choi’s story is the stuff of fucking legends. Too bad we don’t (?) have a Homer on the forums, cause that story needs to be immortalized in poem, Illiad/Odyssey style. I don’t even think you could sell a script based on this story, because it would be denounced as being too unrealistic. Wow.
Anyway, since it’s been a while since this all went down, I hope MIISTTEEEEEEEEEEEEER Choi’s recovery is proceeding nicely. Wish I could have seen John Choi’s performance live… I haven’t seen him play in person since ECC4. Though I doubt it would be included, I think it would be a good idea (with permission of course) if this was mentioned in some form on the Evo DVD.
hey man good job at evo2k8. proud of ya. this was very inspiring and courageous memo. thanks man. inspired me much. GL next year. and yes ill have to take my cheese now ^w^
Your friend was right this thread is pretty inspirational to everyone and I’ll be praying for your dad’s speedy recovery so hope to see you next year:tup:
i can’t even imagine how hard that must have been. i kept reading til the end and i’m truly happy that everything worked out for your dad and your family.
on top of that you won two evo games after all that, congratulations!
after hearing that story i’m even more glad you won your games. your father must have been extra proud especially knowing you pushed yourself to win it for him.
good shit!!
Choi, you are truly an inspiration to not just Street Fighter players, but people around the world. You should spread your message around to others, because it is an awesome message to spread to others. If it inspires me, then it could definitely inspire others.
I will send some prayers to you and your family. I hope your dad pulls through, it seems like he will. Fighters normally persevere no matter the case. I think that you are much like your father. You could have just crumbled under the pressure or decided not to go to EVO, but you did and you simply stunned everyone.
I have much respect for you John, keep strong.
he had to take advantage of his timeshare. KOREAN OF THA YEAR YEEEEE!!!
I’m humbled…
Just so everyone knows: It’s Great British Cheese Week! We are celebrating with cheese.
Hi John,
I wanted to say thanks for writing that. It is really inspirational to read and I realize that its very personal, but maybe thats why its so powerful. Anyway, it really helped, so thanks for writing it, and I’m happy for you and your family. Congratulations.
Congratulations…
WOW :amazed::amazed::amazed::amazed::amazed:
Congratulations :woot::woot::woot:
That’s like having your legs shattered then climbing mount Everest with no oxygen!! I’m very impressed. You have helped me understand that I’ve been playing not to lose this whole time. Your story gives me courage. I pray that your father heals, and feels well soon. He is a wonderful example setter, just like you.
Peace Brother.
Fuuuuuccccccckkkk. That is an incredibly inspiring story.
Good luck to you and your father.
