Where to Play: Arcades in the PNW

They also picked up a neogeo cab with strikers 1945 plus and kof2002. They added dodonpachi and dodonpachi daioujou to their shooters as well. My money is going to die a horrible death.

Just fyi, Dodonpachi is a temporary loaner board, so play that while you can!

Hey guys, I run the arcade games at Pink Gorilla on the Ave. I’m admittedly not a huge fighting game player (though I’m not totally unfamiliar with them either) but I’m trying to do whatever I can to make you guys happy via game selection, proper buttons/sticks, etc. So please, if you have any input, let me know! I finally switched MvC2 over to Happ optical sticks and competition buttons after being asked about it quite a bit, and got Super Turbo up and running. The $.50 price tag on ST is not set in stone, especially after watching some matches play out in a matter of seconds the other day. I might need to leave it that way on Marvel since even at $.50, “Ave rats” (the homeless kids who live on the Ave) park themselves on the machine and play it for like 45 minutes on one credit all day long. But I’ll listen to any/all arguments if the price is a big deterrent.

As for Capcom vs SNK 2, it was making next to nothing and the GD-Rom was acting up, so I pulled it for now. Buying a new GD-ROM would cost more than the game has made in 3 months. I’m keeping the PCB and could always replace the GD-ROM and put it in a candy cab if I felt like there was a desire for it, but for now it seems like a huge flop.

I handle everything with the arcade personally (there is no involvement from the PG staff), and the games are my personal collection, so if you guys have requests of any kind or just want to share your ideas, I’m always eager to talk. Ideally I’d love to keep a perfect balance of hardcore communities (fighting, rhythm game, shmup, and pinball) happy, and hopefully host tournaments and other events. The only thing I probably can’t swing is any kind of SF4/SSF4 cabinet because they’re just way, way overpriced compared to how much they earn. But other than that I’m open to whatever ideas people have. Getting the Super Turbo, for example, was based on the urgings of only a few people, so it definitely makes a difference to let your voice be heard.

50 Cents for Marvel seems acceptable, ST should definitely be 25 cents (single player will just be a dreadful time since the US board’s AI is practically broken). I would definitely play CvS2 if it was put in a cab, but if it’s acting up and you need a new disc maybe wait on that? The only other Capcom fighting games worth investing in are Alpha 3 and/or 3rd Strike. You might wanna check on the dustloop forums to see if there’s any interest in Guilty Gear (I think they still play Accent Core competitively).

Otherwise, I liked what I saw and will definitely come back to play during my breaks on campus.

Hmm, I actually have an Alpha 3 board that I was considering putting out, but a few other local players that I talked to pretty much told me the scene for that game was dead and talked me out of it. I personally love Alpha 3 so if there’s any demand for it at all I’d probably be willing to stick it in a cab! I don’t have a 3rd Strike on-hand (other than 3 dead ones… ugh) but every time a cart comes up for sale I consider buying it. Again, a few players have told me 3rd Strike is pretty much dead in Seattle but if you think there might be some interest I’d definitely consider picking one up for the arcade.

I’ll check into Guilty Gear, Blazblue and such as well. Is there any interest at all in obscure stuff like Project Justice or other oddities? One that I personally love is The Outfoxies, but sadly my PCB died a while back. I’d love to get another one and put it in the arcade, but I have to wonder whether anyone would care if I did. (It’d still be satisfying to expose people to a cool rarity, either way…)

bobbyconover - I wanted to buy a candy cabinet from you guys or see if you can import one. I was told to wait for an e-mail, but i never got it. So can you guys import candy cabinets? Do you have one for sale?

As far as Capcom FGs goes in Seattle, everything except SSF4 and Marvel is pretty much dead. However, there are a ton of people who will still play old games if they see it on a cab. I’ll personally play any Capcom fighter and having a distraction close to campus is great.

Another game that would be cool to see is Virtua Fighter, though current versions are rent-only in Japan and a vanilla VF5 board would probably still cost a lot. I wouldn’t be against a VF4 game, especially Final Tuned since it was never released in America in ANY form. Also they’re inexpensive and run on Naomi so you could drop the disc in the Naomi that CvS2 was using. It would look pretty nice on that Blast City.
:hitit:
I won’t lie to you though, the scene for VF is pretty much non-existent in the US (thanks mainly to Sega) but you never know which onlookers will find interest in the game.

BTW The Outfoxies looks hella fun, is it multiplayer?

Both BlazBlue & GG have decent sized scenes in Seattle, though checking on Dustloop how many people would be willing to go out to PG for it is a good idea. You might also wanna check on Dustloop or Meltybread fi people would be interested in showing up if you somehow got a Melty Blood cab.

Third Strike will definitely do better than Alpha 3. V-ism turns a lot of people away. I love Virtua Fighter but you will make no money on it. Seriously no money.

ST is now 25 cents:wgrin:

ggs to HeavyD, I think we easily dropped about $7 in the span of a half hour. If you’re down in the university district definitely hit up Pink Gorilla.

CVS2 on a candy cab PLZ!!!

I’ll play alpha 3 any day over 3rd strike

I’m just a personal collector and anything spare that I have goes in the arcade right now. I definitely don’t import container loads of candy cabs to sell or anything like that. The ones I’ve found have been through various connections and are almost always one-offs that I pick up for the arcade, so unfortunately I don’t have any for sale and won’t for the foreseeable future. I’m not sure why the guys at the counter told you I sell them, but if they did they were wrong. Sorry about that!

Thanks for the input guys, I’m taking it all into consideration. Honestly, there’s no real reason for me not to throw Alpha 3 out there for a couple weeks and see how it does, rather than sit here wondering and theorizing about it, so I’ll probably do that in the near future. I’ll keep an eye out for 3rd Strike deals too.

Is there any interest in Tekken 5 whatsoever? I have a line on one for sale and Soul Calibur 2 does pretty well for me despite being console ported and old (and in a kinda shitty cabinet), so I thought Tekken might have similar success, at least amongst casual players.

OMG The Outfoxies is such a fun (difficult) game to play. I first played this at an arcade that we used to have MvC2 tournaments at back in 2003 or so. That arcade was called Game Town now that I remember. In the cabinet there were several old school games but Outfoxies was by far my favorite one.

Don’t replace ST with A3 please, but I highly encourage putting A3 out. As far as tekken goes, I personally don’t play it but can tell you that the Hub on campus had a Tekken 5 machine that I observed getting little to no love since I started at UW (2005), so I’m not sure that would be the best choice. Of course it was vanilla 5 and they never got the FREE upgrade to 5DR, so that may be something. If you wanted to get a Tekken game, Tag would probably be the best.

Of course I personally would rather see Virtua Fighter over Tekken…

Don’t get any Tekken machines if theyre not dr or br. I imagine a br machine would be prohibitively expensive, so that coupled with the fact that it wouldnt get that much traffic to begin with make Tekken a hard sell to operate in an arcade here.

I would definitely go alpha 3 over 3s, if only for the fact that more recognizable characters means more foot traffic from random casuals who want to go on nostalgia trips.

Ideally, I’d like to see marvel be 50 cents to start and 25 to continue, so as to not punish dedicated players for playing multiple games (some of these can end in under 40 seconds) against other people. I could understand if this doesn’t happen though.

Also, this is super wishlist status but a Dodonpachi daifukkatsu machine would be crazy awesome.

Lastly, we should get some ST sessions going if anyone has free time. Im usually there between 12-2 or after 330 playing shmups, but if someone comes and wants to play st Im hella down.

About Tekken 5… When I say I have a line on one it doesn’t mean I’m seeking one out and paying full price or anything like that. I was offered one very cheap, locally, so I figured it probably can’t hurt to try it out. The worst that can happen if it flops is I sell it off and make money, so I’ll probably end up trying it out. Hell, it can’t do worse than Marble Madness, which is likely the game it will replace.

Alpha 3 definitely won’t replace Super Turbo – I bought ST after months of being asked by many different people and it has done well so far, so it will definitely be staying around as long as people keep playing it. I’ll probably (sadly) replace one of the shmups with Alpha 3 for a while to see how they do. I personally love shmups and want to have as many as possible in the arcade, but I’m finding they really don’t earn their keep once you have more than 2 or 3 of them. To the vast majority of players they’re all the same and they’ll just play whichever one you put in front of them, but not 4 or 5 different ones.

About Daifukkatsu, I probably can’t afford one of those just yet, but we have had two “Shmupmeets” so far where the PCB made a day-long guest appearance, with the most recent being this past weekend. Our next one will be in late November somehow, so if you like shmups you should definitely check it out. I’ll definitely be trying to get some cool loaner PCBs for the day. So far we have had Muchi Muchi Pork, DFK, Ibara Black Label, and Pink Sweets as donors for the meets, so there are some cool possibilities. We have a thread going about the upcoming meet here: shmups.system11.org • View topic - Seattle Pink Gorilla Shmupmeet & Ranking Battles

As for the Marvel 50/25 idea, I do always like to set up games with the 50 to start, 25 to continue pricing scheme when their PCBs allow for it, but unfortunately many of them don’t. I can’t remember of Marvel does offhand, but if it does I’m surprised I haven’t set it up that way already, since I’m sure I’ve looked over the settings many times. Does anyone know if it’s an option? If so I’ll probably switch it over. I know Neo-Geo doesn’t allow for the half-price continue, which really sucks.

Oh, and that’s so cool about Outfoxies at Game Town. I have heard about that place but had absolutely no idea they had it! I will definitely be trying to find another PCB. Setting up an Outfoxies was one of my main goals when I started up the PG arcade and I really want to follow through with it.

bobbyconver: Your place of operations is in the ID, no? I thought I heard mention of Pink Gorilla in UD? If it’s in ID that would be pretty sweet.

Alpha3 would be dope but I wonder if me and Trace showed up on the same day if the machine would suddenly stop working…
If you ever do replace ST, and not do it with A3, then replace it with A2:tup:

EDIT: Just re-read dkn29 post…no ID…

So I just checked on my Naomi emulator to see how to change Marvel to 50 start 25 continue. It’s a little tricky, but here’s how I got it to work

Test Menu ->
Coin Assignments ->
Coin Chute Type Common
Coin/Credit Setting #1
Coin Chute #1
1 Coin 1 Credit
Coin Chute #2
1 Coin 1 Credit
Sequence Setting ->
Sequence 1 2 Credit(s)
Sequence 2 1 Credit(s)
Exit

Sequence 1 dictates how many credits to start
Sequence 2 dictates how many credits to continue

That should make it work (at least it did on the emulator when I went into the test screen)

I personally love the new arcade setup at the University PG store. You don’t know how long i’ve wanting something like this in Seattle. I’ve always had to go up to Vancouver, B.C to get my arcade candy cab fix.

This resurgence of old school 2D Capcom & Snk fighters at the arcade is awesome. Super Turbo and Alpha 3 are definitely great starters. I’d even like to see some more SNK fighters get exposure. The King of Fighters brand itself has a huge following outside the U.S. Both King of Fighters 98 and KoF 2002 still get decent play. I’m sure when more people learn about the arcade people will come and play competitively. I’d like to see both KoF titles put into one of the candy cabs.

I know KoF 2002 is already in that U.S style MVS cab but it would look so much prettier on one of the New Astro City cabs or even the Blast City.

I know this is wishful thinking but if you ever get a Taito Type X2 setup w/ Super SFIV or vanilla SFIV, you have to consider getting KoF XIII which is so awesome.

Even some classic beat em ups like: Final Fight, Turtles, Simpsons, Alien Vs Predator, Punisher, Knights of the Round would be nice additions to the arcade.
