Every time I watch recent footage from Japan, I don’t see Ken players doing that well. Is he definitely worse than Makoto? Is he possibly even worse than Dudley and Yang?
I thought this was another Wicked Bob thread.
tournament footage represents a few select matches out of the thousands that are played each day. i think fad tier lists where makoto is #1 or hugo is mid tier aren’t really that meaningful. it might be easier to play high risk and pull out a clutch win in an individual match with some other characters compared to ken, but if you add the matchup ratings up and ken is still third best, then he’s still third best. despite what single match or team tournaments show, overall consistency still matters most. it’s not like ken is getting his points against low tiers but is suddenly disadvantageous against other good characters. if that were the case i could understand characters with less total points being considered “better” in practice, but that isn’t that case. just my opinion.
edit btw, the idea that ken isn’t as good anymore isn’t recent. iirc some people who went to japan a long time ago (circa 2005 or thereabouts) used to say that ken was dropping in japan because he was getting “predictable” and things like that, but tournament results, matchup ratings, etc. weren’t really changing to support that belief, as far as i’m aware.
fundamental ken is/always be top.
ken sucks
Ken is solid.
Ken is still extremely good, it’s just that (IMHO) there aren’t many really sick Ken mainers around nowadays. Besides Deshiken

It’s over nein…over nein…nein, neinTHOUSAND!
I think it’s right…
You guys don’t even know how to play the game, how are you going to gauge our a character’s strenghts? Learn more than one way to play and then you’ll see how stupid it is to ask where a character is at any certain point in time.
fuck scrubs
this place is the best
I don’t think so…
Matsuken, Roku, Shie, Gesuyarou, Chinta, Kitagawa, Shoutarou,…
don’t get me wrong. Those are all very good. But Deshiken is/was still on another level. Like saying that AFM has a very good Chun Li but MOV is on another level. We have 3 god chuns but only 1 god ken - who, coincdence? - i think not - is the only one who doesn’t get steamrolled by the holy chun trio
Ken is way too solid to be any less than top. Can link/cancel a lot of his normals into SAIII, solid buttons, good damage, can be played in a variety of styles; he’s just a very complete and consistent character.
deshiken is overrated…
How can he be overrated when a lot of top players agree that Deshiken is on another level from most Kens? Xiao even said last night, that during the first Coop Cup, beating Deshiken was arguably his proudest achievement that whole event.
Pissed off Kuroda stopped being mad for one second
to say yeah Deshiken is dope.
I remembered this ^ due to the Dander comments above!
Bob just wants Ken to do well in Tournament and more people to play him even though umehara is gone. This guy at the LA25th event had a LAClippers “bandwagoners” shirt, BUT HE WOULDNT SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT SF4->SF3
“alright a shoto match this can’t get any easier!! WAKEUP ULTRA!! does this game have wakeup ultra? the one that goes all the way up and you mash for the most hits and damage, shinryuken is kens best super right? is there SRK shortcut in sf3?”
standing right behind the 2 players in the Tournament match saying all this really loud.
BASED
Edit: basically this description of why Ken is top also applies to Duds and Mak, if not others too. (Saying it in a less assholey way than I did before.)
While there haven’t been too many Ken players that have been showing strong performances lately, it would have to take something completely game changing for Ken to be kicked off the Top 3 spot. KO changed the game with Yun, MOV changed the game with Chun and made her best again. Ken players have shown that he is definitely deserving of 3rd best because of the amount of consistency shown, despite the various playstyles each player offers.
There was a period where not too many Yun players have shown strong performances a little while ago. Does that mean he should get kicked off the top spot? No. Yun players just haven’t been representing much.
