So what say you good, are these writers only focusing on “extremes”? Are the people they talking about just “outliers” corrupting feminism? Or are there still serious issues in feminism that need to be addressed?
That aside, I think it’s safe to say branding anyone who advocates for parity between men and women as a “feminist” is stupid and pigeonholing people into an ideology(gies) that they may not subscribe to(and in many cases they don’t subscribe to it for good reason). I’ll repeat again, feminists do not own the discussion on gender and everything related to it.
I think the core of feminism is pretty consistent. Overall it’s about having equal opportunity and treatment among all genders. This extends even beyond the duality of male and female, since gender isn’t a polarity but a gradient.
I think where things get muddled though is when we try to define what that equality looks like. What exactly is oppressive, and if so, how should we fix it?
And just like any cause of social justice there are those who will try and manipulate and warp concepts like equality and fairness to fit their own agenda. It might be cause they want attention so that people buy their books, videos, or attend their conferences. Maybe they just like the attention. Maybe they want to alter the entire political system and take over the world.
But I think this is inevitable with any cause. Humans are opportunists, and if they see a cause as a way to further themselves they’ll use it. Simple as that. Personally I feel that you can agree with feminism on a fundamental level without getting caught up in all the drama and bullshit.

Fair enough Match, but having some agreements with feminism(equal treatment between genders) does not make one a Feminist. Yet feminists will try and impose a label on people who vehemently resist it, as the label does not imply to them, yet feminists can’t seem to grasp that.
Also yeah as you mentioned it gets complicated, partly because everyone’s experiences are different(as you should know better than anyone considering your field). Imposing universal experiences on a group because of a shared characteristic and not accounting for other factors(such as race/ethnicity/class/culture) is being both ignorant to differences in the human experience(and differences within groups thought to be similar) and sometimes outright dishonest(for self gain).
