Okay, we got really lost here. Let’s break it down. You do have to be a literal rapist to be a rapist. So far so good. BUT, you do not have to be a literal rapist for women to be scared of you, or for that kind of fear to affect your life, or the lives of the people around you.
You also do not have to be intentionally trying to oppress people for your actions to be harmful. As annoyingly suggestive as the term patriarchy is, I’ve never seen anyone suggest that men operate as a unified conspiracy. Nobody tries to be biased on purpose. Which is why dumb white people can think the system is biased against them, and whine about affirmative action, while millions of young black men go to prison for basically nothing. The whole point is that the unfair system creates biases that blind people to awful shit.
I’m not a woman. I can’t really live life as a woman. I trust women when they tell me shit is fucked up for them. I trust men when they tell me shit is fucked up, too! Nobody really gets out unscathed, and the really ridiculous thing about this whole discussion is that a lot of men’s and women’s issues have common causes. People should, and often do, work together. That said, feminism has a lot of voices, and a lot of them are pretty terrible. I don’t have a solution for that one. Avoid jerks, I guess.
On giving shitty advice in particular, people mean well, but the flip side is that when a woman or a man, or anyone is raped, that shit comes back up. She shouldn’t have been dressed like that, shouldn’t have been out alone, he drank too much, etc. Even if they are talking about real risk factors for rape, is that really the discussion we want to be having?
Also, I don’t really buy the implication that rapists are incomprehensible sociopaths, at least not too many of them. If you believe it, you should be confused when shit like this works.
