That twitter fiasco is a embarrassment in terms of presenting a compelling example. For starters the so called sexism described there mainly concerned assumptions people made about women in gaming particularity in that they were surprised they worked in the industry. The other examples involved these women claiming they were either overlooked or ignored during meetings/promotions which is a rather silly point because its completely anecdotal…Adria Richards comes to mind as to why claims and accusations need to be thoroughly investigated before it can be rendered as a fact or compelling evidence. I would also think that if sexism was as rampant as these women claim it is we would have some documentation in the form of lawsuits…just seems dumb that the"sexism"is visible enough to bitch about on twitter but not real enough to take to court…WTF.
As for the % of female gamers…without knowing the type of "gaming"that is being referenced, this % can potentially be very misleading. Are we talking console games,PC games or casual games on smart phones and FB. I recall that female gamers also comprise the majority of casual gamers as well so I wouldn’t be surprised if a rather significant portion of that % included non-traditional gaming like FB/smart phone games.
On the last comment about the industry not acknowledging them…well the industry is a business that’s only concern is making a profit. They don’t owe women anything, in fact they don’t owe anyone anything. Their only concern is to make money where money exist and that’s been a status quo of most successful industries since forever.
Which makes it all the more strange to market towards 53% instead of 100%
Again, just because 47% of gamers are women, it doesn’t mean shit if we don’t know how those women are distributed among gaming platforms and what type of games do they play, how much money do they spend buying games (if any), etc.
For example as for 2010 on usa 63% of usa population was white, but this doesn’t mean that the ratio on every state was that, on Maine 96.9% of the population was white.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the ratio of female players tends towards more to free games like browser games and smart phones games or very specific games like rhythm games, rpg’s or platforms for example, i am not saying that there aren’t women playing on consoles, but i am pretty sure that they are much a little part of the population than what a general statistic that doesn’t make any attempt to give a more accurate data claims.
I know, this is just like when black people took over tv, and all of a sudden every show HAS to have a black person and when shows are about white people only they are bad. I’m not racist or anything, but I don’t see why black people have to voice their opinions in things that are traditionally white only. Is it a crime if I don’t want to see them?
I just don’t think women have contributed enough to the community to be let in. Like, maybe we could introduce a sort of “fisher price” video game console for women so they can get used to it, you know…something soft and easy…so that we can gradually let them into the real world. Like a wii with only one big red button. Maybe some kind of 1.5 player games, where the man does all the work and the woman sort of encourages him on in a way that is not too distracting. You know…so they feel like they are contributing, but not upset their delicate sensibilities.
I’m not sure about female gamers…but I would sure love to get head whilst playing a videogame…

When was it demanded that every game should cater to them? I know its easier to fight a position noone is defending… but let focus. whats being asked is that there be a better distribution. not only of types of games, but of types of characters and how they are represented. right now we have a metric ton of games that focus on a very narrow representation (of both men and women…) and that sucks. cus frankly i like varied content.

We are talking about videogames. videogames are not reality. i can zip around on a magnetic rail using my freaking hook hand in bioshock infinite. i can shoot birds out of my hands… but a women must be kept weaker than men… because reality? Yes, there are some fundamental differences between men and women. therefore working towards a better, more just playing field is a bad thing?

You have to look at a media form’s target audience. Frat comedy, yeah you’ll have floozies who take off their clothes and are there just for eye candy. Well on the opposite end you got Twilight, sparkly male model vampire who falls for a plain jane women and fulfills female fantasies.
Fighting games are male dominated, and targetted towards males…kind of like real life combat sports. If you watch combat sports you see cute ring girls in bikinis…is that offensive? No, it is there cause the audience is male and it is satisfying that audience.
As for negative portrayals of women…the portrayals of women in the media are incredibly varied from strong, smart, to dumb, sexy, ugly, everything so it isn’t like people will suddenly think ALL women are like this! It is actually quite different from say portrayal of chinese in 70s with the buck teeth and ‘me so sorry’, or blacks in earlier times where they were all uneducated thugs, cause there was only one type of portrayal. In addition to this, many people never saw/or talked to a person of that race IRL. Women are 50% of the population, so you encounter them IRL all the time.
i think the huge rise in flash games and facebook games is a direct indication that the industry has taken notice that chicks are “gaming”
