"When I Spin, I Spin for the Children" - The King Mixup Thread

Soooo King is like El Fuerte only with a much higher damage output and an additional layer of mixups? Definitely going to start trying him.

Thanks Girlystyle and the rest in this topic!

Err not really. Although he has 50/50s, unlike ELF he can still play a relatively solid hitconfirm/poke game, its not all react/mixup.

Well that’s kinda what I was aiming for. A less one-dimensional El Fuerte.

King’s pretty much… absolutely nothing like Elf. At all. You don’t have a “50/50” game; your command throws need to be ticked to be useful at all, your Jaguar Step mixups can be jabbed out of really easily, and your Rolling Elbow Rush can work, but it’s gimmicky (as it and your :mp: share an animation for the first two hits). You’re a combo monster support type character with decent but not amazing footsies (one of the very few non-crouching lows though). You have the only non-EX instant anti-air counter in the game and loads of way to spend meter for strike invincibility. If you’re trying to make the other guy play 50/50 with your mixup moves, they’ll often guess “jab” and it’ll win.

Exactly. More and more I am finding the mix up is used to GET HIM OUT as opposed to lead to more damage. You need to keep it situational and fresh for anything to be succesful, as well as playing off tendencies you might notice in their defence with their point character

Ugh, so he really is just a tag in, knee them a few times, Liger Bomb, lead to a mixup so that you can safely tag character? I know the commentators in every tag match ever say that frequent tags are best for a tag team, but I was hoping for a whole lot more.

He has a lot of options for those mix ups, but as mutton mentioned they are all pretty much unsafe. so you can have a lot of fun mixup your oppenent with a lot of variety but like I said you need to base it off a read, not thinking it as a 50/50.

He actually plays a lot like ST Honda in that respect, which is why I like King so much in the first place.

What are you guys doing with King if they start rolling a lot?
If you take a step forward after you hard knockdown, on reaction of their roll it seems you can jump back and either J.HP to end up on one side or C.MK to hit them on the other. Is that a cross up opportunity? I’ve only tried it in training.

RJB, charge a counter, backdash out, react.

Really? I’m trying it now but it seems the counter does not charge until they have already rolled and are standing behind you.

Shouldn’t. I’ve tested it a couple of times and the counter should be charged just in time for them to start the roll. Even if they don’t, you should be far enough away to avoid any reversals or counters…well, most (just in case there is one that beats it). This is especially potent when you do the RJB in the corner, where you want people as King.

Ah. I’m gonna try faster then. I’d like for my idea to be plausible because it seems to be the same motion you’d do if attempting the normal j.mk cross up, but the timing is pretty tricky. Does every character roll at the same speed and distance?

I am fairly certain that all rolls are universal.

Relooking at it, yeah the timing is slightly off. By the time the charge is done the character can either roll or get up. However, charging after the RJB can also be a good bait.

So in this case after RJB, if you charge the counter you need to watch how the opponent gets up. If they roll forward then you can dash ‘forward’ out of it and you’ll be safe with a counter charged. If they do not roll and instead try to reversal from a normal wakeup, you can back dash to safety and start a hard hitting combo (minus long reaching counters like Ken’s HP DP). I think between this, back dash into Jaguar step (which is safe at least against wakeup ken DP), and crossup MK the opponent’s head can get messed up.

Edit: Another way to mess with their head is to cancel the charge early and not get the stored counter.
