What's with all the unnecessary nerfs to zangief?

I’m not sure if it’s a nerf but let’s use dragon punch characters as an example vs Gief in the current build of usf4. If you land ex greenhand and do delayed crouch tech and ryu does a dragon punch after you block it he either does a forward dash or backdash, dp fadc forward dash is like -5. If you want you could just do a combo, regular throw or more damaging grabs depending on how quick you feel at that time but for me personally after i block a shoryuken i’d just press upback while i’m in blockstun then do a half circle forward and if they forward dash i’d just press up and punch for a fierce spd and if they back dash i’d jump cancel lp spd by finishing my input off with up forward or just do lp greenhand to catch their backdash since you’ll be so close to them when you block their dp they’d still be in range.

Since you’re so close after ex greenhand your normal cr jab os long sweep should work easier now and might be more dependable now i might start using that instead of cr jab os st hk depending on how fast the opponents backdash is.On another note I do have to admit that dp-lv1 focus attack then back dash or forward dash could be a little tricky to punish but atleast you won’t get counter hit out of your spd if you tried it since they didn’t put that into the game, that would be terrible haha. I wouldn’t be suprised if none of these things worked in whatever current build capcom is doing right now anyway.

kinda late on the reply but st mp nerf kinda sucks, I wasn’t playing for that long but i did play a couple games against hugo 101’s Bison that match is even worse than it is now for bison lol. everything about the st medium punch seemed regular except for when i tried to whiff punish with it and got hit with st. rh, i probably threw it out too early though but thats the thing, the way the hurt box is shaped on st mp you kinda can’t throw it out too early and against attacks like bison’s st rh, I got stuffed by st rh on start up so idk. I should have tested stuff more.

The mobility of lp gh actually seems fast enough to catch someone off guard in midscreen play with lp gh into spd or ultra but it’s not extremely fast. It’s not like a Makoto forward dash into command grab. It is fast enough to replace walking forward and blocking fireballs with just hitting a fireball with lp gh and blocking right afterwards to close in on opponents but not against characters like Guile and Gouken.

Seemed like they range on st lk was reduced very slightly cr lk x2 - st strong - st lk still worked against Bison e. honda and I can’t remember if it worked on Zangief, those were the only characters i played against.

Good stuff Snake Eyez. Maybe they’ll at least take back the st.mp nerf in a later build. I seriously doubt it but it’s yet another totally unnecessary change that wasn’t warranted at all.

According to this: capcom-unity.com/combofiend/blog/2014/01/30/ultra-street-fighter-4-change-list we now can’t combo into EX GH from lights anymore (again).

^ Are u really surprised though? I’d bet anything that this will stick from here on out. Funny how Combofiend says that players with good footsies will excel in Ultra so what do they do? Lets nerf st.mp, st.lk, and the ability to cancel lights into ex.gh.

With only ONE more build left before they release Ultra SF4, there’s not much time left.

I don’t really know what more you guys expect, especially if we have a faster and safer far MK and regular GH.

I want to campaign with “MAKING CR.MP SPECIAL CANCELABLE.” This is what Zangief really needs.

As you all are aware, combos into EXGH - EX RFA - Ultra 1 or HP SPD - won’t hit on crouching opponents!
But if you can pop them up using cr.MP’s force stand, especially off a jump in, your good to go.

Not to mention, you can pop them up into numerous Lariat combos for the soft knockdown.

This hasn’t been mentioned much but I’m starting to worry about the st.mp nerf. Of course it’s totally unnecessary but what else is new. This could really hurt us in poke heavy mu’s like Rose, Claw, etc. I’m not expecting anything positive for the final build.

Well, I think the st.mp nerf should be compensated by making it do more damage.

I’m sure if won’t affect whiff punishing, which is essential for Zangief’s play. As you generally count on far mp’s speed and good range. But if you want more range, you could use far MK.

It will affect these two scenarios:

a) Trading with shoryuken or trades in general, especially after EXGH, but it may mean that you will have to use a light attack in it’s place,

b) brain dead far st.mp spam. For pro-active counters to their pokes, you will be using light attacks instead. Actually, in Ultra, every Zangief will be option selecting like crazy.

The value of outclassing their pokes with your light o/s GH just went sky high. This will awaken the Vangief in everyone.

Edit: Also need to examine the utility of cr.hp and close HP, which I’m not sure, what purpose they have. cr.hp needs to be buffed to allow it to FADC forward dash safely or EX RFA safely.

Whiff punishing with st.MP may be affected vs moves with a ton of active frames, but outside of that it should remain the same.

I remember anti airing a Vega player with lp green hand when they jumped backwards after I hit them with a lp greenhand combo.

I have to check at NCR to make sure if it’s the same.

i told you bro, just test out stuff and dont show off… gief is getting nerf mainly because of you lol… i already begged combo for some needed changes like focus to hit crouching opponents, make kkk lariat full projectile invincible from startup and make GH armor break… also to make sure exgh hits twice everytime., etc… now is your turn to talk to him :slight_smile:
i noticed gief CANT punish honda ex headbut even though he lands closer now. i just hope lpgh is fast enough to get close to blanka when we block a blanka ball.,

You can AA a jump back roundhouse from Vega with any GH right now, it’s not anything that is broken. It’s just that Vega’s jump back roundhouse beats st hk from Gief but greenhand can beat it out.

Those buffs are exactly what I want too, aside from a 3 frame jab so that gief can stop becoming a full risk character and +1 after ex hand on hit would mean something. You’re giving away the goods on a blocked ball on Gief haha.

Iv’e asked for -1 on lpgh along with other reasonable buffs, probably the same that you’ve named but instead every test loc I see Gief keeps getting jacked. Must be someone at the office.

Well Combofiend is bringing USF4 to Texas Showdown this weekend. Maybe we can convince him; I’ll try to push for those changes Eric listed as I think those are things Gief absolutely needs, especially the GH armor break and focus hitting crouching opponents.

Again, IIRC Lariat goes through Red Focus like a hot knife through butter, they absorb like 4 or 5 hits, there’s a slight delay where Red Focus gets released, and they get hit by the last hit of Lariat, making them lose more than half of their health in the process.

Green Hand as an armor breaker for me is less vital to Gief’s gameplay than cr.MP being special cancellable or focus attack hitting crouching opponents (this needs to happen).

Asking Combofiend for Gief buffs is a complete waste of time guys. He’s anti grappler, or anti Gief. I’ll bet anything that all those things we want will not be implemented at all and we’re not even asking for much compared to what other characters got. All we want is a semi-viable character but I guess that’s too much for them to give us.

It depends on when they release the FA. If regular focus can beat lariat, then I’m sure red focus can too. Either way, it’s not a consistent (or real) FA breaker and Gief needs one.

I wonder if they have read this thread. PRoabably not, I hate the new ediiton character changes in general. Just like the new stuff.
