What's a proper age to stop playing video games?

I’m 24, and I’m going to go with “never”. We’re a new generation. We’ll be playing old retro games in the retirement homes and complaining about todays games when we’re old.
And with some luck, we’ll have robot bodies and live forever.

I can picture it now.

Back in my day we had to push buttons to play video games! None of this motion sensor crap!

shit…i just turned 30 in march and i play more games and attend more tournaments now than I did growing up.

there is no age cut-off for playing video games.

This is a different generation. The generation of kids who were younger than 10 when the NES came out are slowly reaching their 30’s. Those who are nearing their 40’s were around the great video game golden era of the late 70’s and the arcades of the 80’s.

Today’s generation of gamer, who have the 360 and PS3 as their SNES/Genesis (I feel bad for today’s gen tbh), will have been born in a world where gaming is well rooted and is already a strong aspect of entertainment media. Much like cinema and music, there is no “age” where gaming is over for someone.

One does not outgrow the desire to have fun.

Asking when the age to quite video games is just like saying someone is to old to ever go back to school. Why should it ever matter if you play video games for the rest of your life. I will play games till it is physically impossible to play video games anymore, and when that times comes I will miss playing video games. This was a dumb question to ask sorry but true. I just turned 25 last week and I will not be quitting any time soon and I hope to share gaming with my daughter long into the future.

Cool will the first thing you teach her is a wake-up shoryuken? =]

Just like weed or drinking.

You quit when you die. Otherwise you are just a worthless quitter.

I have monthly get togethers with my friends all the time I’m 32 the oldest in the bunch is 38. Playing fighting games and drinking til 4am is the shit. And we don’t bother any one. My girlfriend excepts it and she has a night out with my friends girls or wives.

Add me on Xbox

My dad turned 72 this year and he still plays Tiger Woods and Crash Bandicoot.

Just sayin

Shit… i have gamer friends that reach between the ages of 18-40+. There is no age to stop playing games. Nor is it, at least from what I have seen looked down upon when you reach a certain age.

Like i said, i know gamers of all ages, races, social status, etc. Games will always be a part of culture. Is there an age that you should stop playing chess, scrabble, puzzle games, etc? And now what is the difference between board games and video games. They are both one in the same. Just played on different mediums.

That’s pretty cool. I was at a friends house playing sf4 and his mom came in the middle of a match, hit the tray button, took the game out, put guitar hero 3, grabbed a guitar and started playing saying its her turn. lolol shes like 53

Take a look at the Wii’s marketing scheme if you’re so insecure about your hobby. The Wii (and consequently, gaming) is often specifically marketed towards “middle-aged” and even elderly people.
Blackberry devices have tons of games available for them. iPhones, too. $600 handsets are not childrens’ devices.

If you’re genuinely concerned about how you will “look” to other people, at the age of 24, then… well, I don’t even know what to tell you. Most people get over that shit by the time they hit mid teens. I’m not going to say, “grow up”, but it would serve you well to worry a little less about the superficial things. There are indubitably better things for you to be concerned with. Assuming you have a job, are working for the things you enjoy, support yourself and your loved ones (or at least contribute), then I don’t see why you would have anything to be concerned about when it comes to your recreational activities.

Because my brother is 21 and gives me shit about still playing video games.

My friend turns 38 this month. He still plays. He collects systems, and repairs new ones as a hobby. He finds time to play when he doesn’t have work to do around his house, and on his day off from work while his wife is at her job. Works out nicely for him.

You live in NY. Go down to chinatown on a weekend, you’ll see people 30+ playing Chinese chess. Go to Washington Sq, you’ll see people playing chess. Go to a bar, you’ll see people playing trivia games. Go to CF, you’ll see a number of gamers from every age playing things from Street Fighter to 1849, Pac-Man, and the likes. Go to any corner in the hood, you’ll see people playing celo, craps, spades etc.

People will always compete at games of skill. Video games are no different.

Great post my man.

I go to chinatown arcade fair 4 times a week during the weekdays.
I hate the ssf4 machines they have there though.

12 minutes $1? wtf? lol

i’m pretty old compared to most people and their plenty of stuff I don’t do anymore. I don’t watch cartoons, I don’t play with gi joes or transformers, I don’t read comics, I don’t do anything I did as a kid but the one thing I have always done since I was old enough too is play video games. I started on atari and arcades and I don’t know when I’ll stop but I am sure it I will know. As far as habits go video gaming is way better than chronic masturbation… oh wait…
