I remember that match, I wanted to know if Balrog had a good counter to instant air drills…st.mp hitbox didn’t go far forward enough to catch Sim’s hurtbox. Think he just st.lp - st.lk - instant air drill’d me to death while I was trying to figure out the timing/validity of it

He bodied the fuck outta me, first Sim match I’ve had as Rog. Was testing a lot of stuff mid-match like teleport counters, drill stuffers and counter pokes to his stretchy stuff.
Not making any excuses though, dude fucking trainwrecked me in quick fashion.
Lots of mediocre Ibuki’s running around, I’ve only met one who had any form of mix-up with the bomb. I personally think Rog shits over Ibuki at every angle until she manages to get a v-trigger activation off cleanly, then it’s “time to guess”
You’ll need to face better Ibukis. She’s really good at whiff punishing and counter hitting since shes’ a rushdown character with the walk speed of a footsie character. All it takes is one counter hit or one buffered s.MK into target chain and you start falling into target combo screen carry combos into throw/counter hit mix ups.
I only had time to upload a couple, but here are a few of my matches with some of my local players. I realize a lot of Balrog stuff is going unpunished, but I think I’m starting to get an okay handle on what to do!
Ok so you have to have serious footies and defense and on point charge handling to play rog effectively.
I jumped the gun with him being the worst in the game, but I still think he has the worst match ups in the game vs laura, Gief and especially mika. Mika for sure is probably the worst match in the game right now.
1st thing I’d suggest is get comfortable blocking, really comfortable. Next work on tech throwing… if you can do those things you already ahead of the game.
Rog isn’t a rush down character, they lied to us. But he has almost instantaneous burst damage and his stun output is stupid high.
I wouldn’t put him any higher than mid tier…With terrible match up and good match ups vs all 900 life characters out side of Karin.
As someone who enjoyed playing as Barlog in previous games, I think they made a mistake by making his super move/critical art a single hit. Gigaton blow was ALOT more fun in the older games as it hit multiple times (see video below). They should have made it hit multiple times but do the same damage (even on an air borne opponent). It wont make much difference overall but would have been fun to both hit, and to parry with ryu/alex.
Any doods figure out how to get in or any use for cr.LK? I get a knockdown and I do cr.LK, cr.LP but from the dash I never have the charge to land a LP Rush Punch.
My strats with Tyson have been mainly the occasional Rush Punch cause doods can hit him out of it. Occasional HP. And if I’m close I’ll just pressure with cr.MK. I don’t do the target combo.
He feels mid-tier. He could be better. Either make HP CC or give it faster startup. And either make one of his target combos safe on block or make his V-Meter 2 blocks instead of 3 so I can do cr.MKx2 and V-Trigger cancel to safety. I think if they buffed the Rush Punch to have better priority like Dicktater’s scissor kicks he’d be a little too powerful.
Kinda pisses me off how they almost make colors 1-7 lame almost on purpose just to save 8, 9 and 10 for hard trials, which are crazy unfair and not the least bit fun. I just got the normal trial colors for balrog and they are fucking awful, man. I’m sticking to color 3 pink rog till I get to 15. I actually find that for all 4 characters I switch between, color 8 is always the one I want the most
So point blank pressure atm consists of double st.hk and fishing for whiffs with cr.mk. I think it’s almost better to deliberately put some distance between you and your opponent when they’re cornered and just poke at them and wait for whiff punishing. I really, REALLY wish he had an overhead that was non kkb. Maybe a slow target combo ala guile would do.
I think whoever can reliably counter poke or outrange rog in neutral has the upper hand if they play right. Cammy can just st.mk you out of everything, lol. I don’t see where the issue is with laura though, I think it’s even. If you let her charge a fireball then it does become an issue, I like to just chase them around the whole time without giving her much space. Her jumping mk is a giving me headaches though, it seems to beat st. mp at almost all angles.
Maybe irrelevant but try logging out and logging back in, there have been some instances where frequent input drops have occurred even when you’re just in training mode.
Had it happen yesterday and it was really messing with my charge/combos.
