Yo Imma join in on the hype!!! So stoked to have my SF4 main back at last, and in a boss outfit too!
Never thought much of his alt 1 in SF4, but looks so much more appropriate here. Gives him the boss/champion/wreck-your-face look!
That said, I’d so buy #14 in the above concept art XD
If I’m not mistaken it’s the same kid that mysteriously appears in story mode (pictured above with Balrog and Urien). Could be that Balrog tried to sell the kid to Bison who in turn tasks Balrog with babysitting him, a task he would probably detest. I can see the kid being a season 2 DLC character (first brand new dlc character) if he plays a decent role in the story mode.
After rewatching the Critical Art video, I really don’t think that’s a bf charge super. The animations before his activation are crouch, forward step, crouch, forward step; that’s a qcfx2 input.
I doubt it’d be full invincible for active frames. Full start-up invuln at best since SFV has been fairly conservative with handing out the invuln frames.
I missed the start when they were discussing his specials, but near the end they referred to his dash upper as “flash kick.” Could mean it’s a d.u charge move instead of b.f. although it doesn’t anti air above his head. All versions of it except EX whiff on crouching.
Edit: They mention EX dash upper is his only armored move, meaning EX dash punch no longer has hyper armor sadly…
His vskill throw bait mixups look so dirty and will definitely be key to his game. He looks to have a strong neutral as well. He seems to have Dudley’s st.mk from SF4 too although I don’t know how big the hitbox is.
It was on capcom fighters on twitch a while ago. The Balrog showcase is over now but archived and available for subscribers XD. The stream is on going though with winnerstayson and some people messing around with Balrog.
I’m not worried, but I’m questioning how Balrog keeps up the pressure without forcing himself into unfavourable situations or playing into “gimmicks” - his straight, overhead, dash low, dash upper and dash v-skill cancels all look unsafe so I’m left wondering how we get in outside of abusing sloppy reactions or forcing guessing games. I guess I was kinda hoping for some safer options to progress forward.
The cr.mk target combo into stomp looks super strong, I love the space Balrog covers when he does it.
His damage output looks below average, I think he’s not doing enough from the BnBs I’m seeing and his VT + 3-bar combos are the only ones I’ve seen that look incredibly beefy. Maybe someone will find a loop you can perform in V-Trigger, or a better max damage string to do.
His normals look great, king of anti-airing once again. The range of most of them look alright, but the st.hp looks mad good for just bullying the ground.
His vskill is pretty fast and opponents will learn to expect it and have to react. He can cancel into vskill mixups from normals, so frame advantage could vary by normal. Still might be gimmicky as you say, but we’ll have to see when we get to actually use him. In Vtrigger, you can even cancel specials into vskill.
I doubt the combos shown are optimal, so once again, I don’t want to write him off, but he seems to do respectable damage at least. Most of the games I’ve seen at least were mirror matchups, so could also mean he has above average health.
cr.mk target combo does not come out if you whiff the cr.mk, so you won’t be able to do it from long range to close any distance. It is -6 on block they mentioned so definitely punishable, but can be cancelled into vtrigger to make it safe. It does look like good corner carry on hit though and easy confirm into vtrigger combos.
Edit: He also has a hold down turn around punch like before which comes out pretty fast and seems safe on block. Also his EX dash low and EX dash upper do seem safe. I’m not sure about the normal versions.
You can use the cr.mk target combo as a very strong buffer tool, I’m not referring to using it as a pseudo-dash that would be pointless, I’m talking about catching limbs and being immediately in their face for getting a counter-poke, and you’re most likely + frames. Nobody else in the roster can do that right now.
Yeah I need to see optimal damage, nobody is using the launcher target combo to juggle into his dash punches which I think will be his main damage output method.
You can’t v-skill cancel his specials outside of v-trigger? What? I thought that was the entire point of it.
Right, I didn’t think of that use for his cr.mk TC. Seems pretty solid then.
I didn’t watch much after the first showcase. I’m not sure if he can cancel specials outside of vtrigger. I only remember seeing it happen during vtrigger. I could be wrong, but seems too strong to be able to cancel specials at any time…
They were messing about with it near the end and you can punish a fireball from full screen even just after its thrown so it looks like it has some pretty hefty Invincible frames in that case.
aite lets make some bnbs even tho we dont have frame data.
