Just ran a couple of sets with Cloud. Hype matches. Will upload tomorrow. Sleep time is now.
I just realized I’m playing in a tourney this Saturday and don’t even know what team to run…
Zero / Iron Man / Strange is what I’ve been running the most, but my Iron Man isn’t great yet. I do have a ton of mixups and resets with this team though.
Zero / Dante / Assist (Sentinel) is what I have the most experience with from vanilla but I don’t really like Dante anymore.
Zero / Doom / Strange is currently my secondary team but I think purely from a tier perspective it’s by far the strongest of these 3 teams. I haven’t practiced my setups with this team enough to be consistent though…
Any thoughts to help me with this decision?
I’d definitely go with the last team.
Posted the hour long set with Cloud in the video thread. Check it out there or on my channel.
Things I saw from the video:
- Stealing the j.3:h: > j.:s: > buster to get combos when you land a hit up above. Use to use j.3:h: > j.:h: or j.
>j.
before.
- Why isn’t Cloud using Ryuenjin? He gets combo extenders for Dante, but most importantly he allows Vergil to combo out of all of his grabs (even though Jam Session allows this as well). I was thinking of Weasel Shot with Dante so Zero and Vergil and mixup side to side, but they don’t really need it seeing Zero has buster and Vergil has j.:s: to get a combo on from how the opponent pops out from Jam Session crossup.
- I thought like by the 5 match you guys were going to start baiting the SJ Setsuizans. I though someone was going to stay at the bottom, wait for the other to SJ, see Setsuizan startup, wavedash and :s: from the other side.

Raikouzen > Buster > :l: Raikouzen started to look pretty dirty.
I’m not sure if he knows about the Ryuenjin assist for Vergil. I think he has it on projectile for Vergil crossups, but the hitstun is so small it’s not always worth it.
Baiting the sword dives are scary because they have a really good hitbox, and I personally am backed by Sentinel to keep it safe most of the time. I thought about how to bait them and punish after the match because they happened a lot. However no one really wants to stay on the ground because Zero’s so good in the air, and for Cloud, being on the ground means drones. I try to meet him in the air in anticipation of him avoiding or attempting to punish the assist.
I was thinking he was going to start counter assist calling, but not much happened it was just a very cool and fun air space control battle. I love Zero mirros with a good Zero player, too bad Zero has such low health to not enjoy it for long.
Buster should punish Sent’s assist right?
Oh yeah, a lot of the fight was trying to get Sentinel out without getting him hit by the level 3 buster. Cloud was really good about punishing Sentinel as much as possible. Lightning cancels in the air would have helped keep him out of the proper angle to hit Sentinel.
So as amazing as Lightning > Buster > Lightning is, I’ve realized that I (and probably most people) have been sleeping on Lightning > Buster > Sentsuizan. Sure the lightning crosses up, but one of my sparring partners yesterday noted that my H-Sentsuizan did a double crossup; he blocked the Sentsuizan facing one way, and I landed on the other side of him and hit him from there. So you get the lightning/buster crossup mixup into a double crossup.
I found out how to combo off any air lv3 buster last night (unless you’re really high from a superjump). As you all know it’s gotten more difficult (sometimes impossible without assists) to combo off of lv3 air busters in umvc3, but this makes it really easy. You just cancel the startup of raikousen (immediately) into buster (then do :l: hienkyaku, dash
whatever). The lightning appears to come out of nowhere, and hits after the buster making them fall slower.
the only thing ive had a hard time understanding about zero is how the knockdown on his dive kicks work. sometimes it gives a hard knockdown and sometimes it doesnt knock down at all. can some1 explain how it works to me?
If they are in an air combo state (have been hit by st. S) then it will knockdown.
If you do :s: first, it’s a hard knockdown.
thanks
Zero (a) Vergil (y) Dante (a) is really fun and they all work well together. Zero is really fun in ultimate
After going 0-2 at a local tournament yesterday, I realized that I’m struggling in finding the middle ground between offense and defense. I know Zero’s mixup game and low health encourages offense, but at the same time I feel that his low health means I should be more defensive. I felt that really messed me up because both of the people I went up against were Wesker players and knowing his damage, I really didn’t want to go in and risk being demolished. I wish I had vids but I’m kinda lacking in recording stuff atm. I might have footage after the next tourney I go to on Dec. 10th.
Ok, i finaly got my hands on the game and i need some direction as to how should i start to improve my Zero.
You can skip to the last sentence if bricks of text scares you. And because i am not so sure that what i wrote is quite usefull (except maybe the double rekkoha combo that is probably old history anyway)
I hadn’t played since last june/july and was using a Zero/Doom/Chris (ryuenjin / hiden missiles / machine gun M) since the end of the release week. I got the feeling that i woke up from a century long nap and that my body is a stranger to me here.
Last time i played, i had gootent all the basics of the character and some bnb like the shippuga loop with button charging done, the D-Loop almost assimilated, got my way around TK raikousen and how to time a TK M raikousen and Chris gunfire in order to cross the screen instantly and comboing afterward and was working on somethin completely useless but that i found fun to use. Ending combos by calling a hiden missile launching Rekkoha, hidden missiles hit, linking a second Rekkoha, DHC to Sphere Flames.
By tweaking it a littIe i endend up with that combo :
L (charge) MH (gunfire) 6H, H, 6H, S, j.MM xx buster lv3, 623L, S, j.MMHS, (hiden missile) Rekkoha, Rekkoha.
105 hits, 805k. and if i recool correctly builded enough meter to be self suficient.
But linking the hiden missile is still stict and i can’t pull it off that much.
And also, i never quite understood the j.mmh loop thing, never found the right notation for it nor any indication for it’s timing.
So now, i look at the game and i see some new character that seems fun. I know i wan’t to replace Chris and i am woundering by who : Nova, Vergil or Strider. From what i read, they interact well with Zero but i don’t know with which assist. And i have no idea how they works with Doom. Except for Strider that seems to be his bff since mvc2 and still his.
So i was thinking about building a Zero/Doom/Strider team. I still have no idea which assist i shoudl take and can’t find the information in the team thread.
But anyway that’s just some ( a lot) of background info.
My first concern are about the j.mmh a,d raikousen loops. Is ther any where on the board where someone explain them clearfully ?Like what’s the core notation for them ?If there is some tricky timing to know of ? In what direction should we look to expand them into better/easier combo ?
I am sure that if i spend my sunday looking through the board, i might fin some clue about them but it’s faster to ask about that here.
Then, finally, and that’s the reason i’m posting in the first place : after deciding which team to use with the right assist and order, what should i look for to bette my skills with Zero ?
When the X costume drops I’m looking forward to dozens of combo videos set to DMX’s X Gonna Give it To Ya. Zero forums, make it so.
Is anyone actually looking forward to that costume?
Yup, it’s going to make me pick up Zero in a heartbeat :woot:
