Yun/Yang were somewhat basic designs but certainly had some interesting aspects mechanically in SF3. Also their supers are pretty unique too and would probably make sense with the powerup mode they are giving everyone.
People care about the roster size being too large? I actually like that. I’d rather have a lot of options. But I can see where the lazy player would hate learning all of those match-ups. Coming from the early days of Marvel 2, when every character was still viable since Storm or Magneto were not unlocked at at CF, I learned to play every character to some degree and how to defend against them. That’s the best part of competitive gaming, imo, but whatever.
Anyway, I’m down for 3-4 returning characters and the rest of the cast being brand-new. I really hate seeing old characters come back in a sequel and would be fine if it were just Ryu and Ken while every other slot was a new character.
That’s a pretty good list for a game that is starting off with 16 characters, no Yun, and that kind of makes sense to me for some reason. But C. Viper is a perfect character for the list, SF5 needs at least one derp non traditional SF character at launch, and it sure as hell isn’t going to be dumb ugly El Fuerte.
Not a single traditional grappler only hybrids (Abel/Alex), only 2 new characters for a whole new game? SF4 Launch had Gouken, El Fuerte, Abel, Viper, Rufus, and Seth before the console release. That is 5 new characters out of a cast of 19. 26% were new characters. 2/16 is HALF of that with only 12.5% new.
In addition that list doesn’t include a single character truly oriented solely to fireball zoning. Juri - Rushdown + zoning. Rose/Ryu/Chun their zoning is really secondary to their poke game. Nash looks to be much more of a mixup character than a zoning character now.
I don’t feel that list provides a particularly interesting variation of playstyles.
It wouldn’t surprise me if 3/4th of the roster would be filled with returning characters. I don’t think the original 8 WW holds up anymore as the essential roster, especially since there is such a rich, diverse history to choose from. Technically, it would be competing with Ultra 4 so it has to be unique.
You’re right, there should be more new characters, 16 just seems so small nowadays, but don’t lecture me on “balance” of having a small cast, yep i know. Also, i kind of just expected the new characters to come as DLC, cause they seem really bent on releasing this game just for a major fighting game tournament, which would be totally unprofessional if it were to be the case. Everyone on that list are characters that don’t annoy me or look stupid, they got the top tier look. None of that Blanka
** Gen** (just let the old man die already), Dan (waste of a character slot, and fuck tradition for once), Deejay (he’s been low tier for a reason, the developers don’t give a fuck about him for good reason, not cause he’s black) Rufus, El Fuerte, and Adon all need to go. The only reason i didn’t say Hakan is cause i’m pretty damn sure he’s gonna be in it cause he’s never been in a single game besides SF4 sadly, i pray he’s not in it, or ever going to be in it.
If Gen is gonna die, he better die in a game. He’s a unique character design, I think he would work in SF5 and if it’s gonna be his last game before he kicks the bucket let him bow out with dignity. That’s why I added him to my list.
Well Chun Li is in, and Gen is a bit of a rival to her, so I could see it happening. What Capcom needs to do is make wall jumps not useless like they were in SF4 unless you were using El Fuerte or Seth.
