Forgive the questions from a complete n00bie looking to buy his first stick. After reading the thread I was curious what your thoughts were on a custom stick like Project Giant Sword? I’ve some players using them, and I would like to get something I can use on both a 360 and PS3. I’ve seen discussion on the Qanba QR4 but it seems like the jury is still out on that one? Thanks.
Well, I see nothing wrong with buying a custom, but it will generally be more expensive than buying a store bought stick, which is the reason why they aren’t recommended for a beginner. If you buy one, you would certainly be pleased with it though, no doubt about that. But, I think it would be wise to purchase the Qanba and use it for a while until you totally decide if you want to commit to spending hundreds on a custom stick.
Basically, you shouldn’t buy a car before you have a chance to test drive it. Go out and purchase a cheaper stick to get of feel for using the parts, and if you decide you are ready to make a full commitment to stick, then you should start considering customs. Almost everyone here that has a custom started out with store bought sticks at one point in time.
I use my Project Giant Sword case more than any of the other sticks I own… its comfortable to me… Depending on how you are with money… it would benefit you to buy a more affordable store bought stick… but in all honesty if I were to do it again I would just go straight custom… not because I have a problem with store bought… but because if I were to buy a stick I want it to be what I feel is a perfect set up… quality…feel…looks… I want my design… my components… my colors… thats the only reason for me to buy a custom… even my store bought sticks I own are modded… nothing was left stock… everything changed to a degree… so its a hard choice for a beginner that sees posibilities in what they can have and what they can afford… customs do take time to make tho so time is also a factor…
Thanks a lot for the advice guys. I’ve heard the fighting community is like a giant family and this solidifies that
I think I’m going to plan on getting a Project GiantSword Classic when the store opens back up (which I hope is soon). That way I get a style and design I like, but not the super top end custom design to save myself money.
In the meantime, I may pick up a beginner stick used just to get a feel for things and make sure I want to go all in.
The Tatsunoko vs Capcom Fightstick for the Wii is pretty cheap right now, how hard would it be to mod it to work on PS3? Also, does the PS3 Brawl Stick have the same issues working on PCs that the original Street Fighter 4 SE fightstick has?
In general, For the Mad Catz PS3 sticks the PS3 SE/Brawl Stick uses the same PCB as the Mad Catz PS3 TE
How hard is it to mod a Tvc C Wii stick for the PS3?
All you need to do is replace the PCB, which is the brains of the stick.
The PCB connects to the system cable, in the PS3 case a USB cord. And attach the buttons, stick and ground wires to the new PCB.
Get a Cthulhu as there almost no soldering involved. Soldering involves adding system cables to some where other than the USB jack onboard.
The other wires nicely fits into screw terminals.
Was thinking about purchasing the Brawl Stick since I’m on a budget but could possibly mod along the way. I’ve heard stuff about it but never got an actual consensus about it. Be appreciated if anyone could give me the low down
its about the same as a Madcatz Se… The stick and buttons are a higher quality clone of the sanwa stick and buttons… I havent heard any bad reviews from the buttons like the older SE’s but I do hear they are a tad less sensetive as the origional Sanwa pushbuttons… you can dual mod just as easily as you can an SE… I think I have read somewhere tho that you cannot dual mod with a Kitty due to a Sixth pin in the PCB… not too sure because I dont use Kitty’s to dual mod… for the price I think its a good set up…
Hey dark so i was looking at your front page and was noticing the prices for the the hori fighting stick v3 and the prices for the rap v3 sa have been reduced signifacantly. I see the fighting stick v3 at amazon and the usa hori store for 59.99 the vx is 69.99. I also the the rap v3 sa for 129.99 the vx is 139.99. just letting you know so you can adjust the prices for newcomers
I’ve been saying I would get an arcade stick for quite some time now. I bluffed out of getting the SSFIV TE stick when Amazon had it on sale for a buck thirty. After playing KOF 13 at Otakon, there is no doubt in my mine the stick is for me. I’ve been playing with my cousins regular SFIV stick from time to time, but now is the time to get my own before KOF 13 comes out. Should I still grab the Super TE stick or should I just stick with my original plan of getting a custom stick? I really want a hybrid stick bad with some custom art. All help is needed and I’d appreciate it if you could look out for a brotha.
P.S - Anyone know of a site that does custom art on sticks that don’t care if its trademarked or not? I was lookin’ at those Arcade in a Box cats, but they are on the “We won’t do it” tip and it bummed me out for real. But again, good lookin’ out SRK fam.
It’s awesome that you want to get an arcade stick $Greatness$! KOFXIII is definitely going to be hype; I’m looking forward to it myself. If what you say is true, I can’t believe myself; I missed the chance to get a SSFIV TE stick for $1.30?! :annoy:
Anyways, I personally would recommend against getting a custom arcade stick as your first stick. Customs are definitely really nice to own and if you know EXACTLY what you have in mind, that’s awesome. It makes it easier for the person you commissioned to work with you to help you get the kind of stick you want. The fact is though that most people who haven’t owned an arcade stick before don’t know what exactly they want. I’m not saying you’re one of them, but I’m talking from my own personal experience here.
I know personally at least 3 friends who, when they first wanted to get an arcade stick, immediately went and commissioned a custom stick built for them. All 3 of them unfortunately ended up not using their customs anymore for various reasons. One of them quit playing fighting games entirely. Another was just really unhappy with the design of his case. The last one really didn’t like the layout of the buttons and joystick he had on his stick (the joystick was too far away from the buttons). The latter of these 3 ended up just going off and buying a retail stock stick like the Mad Catz TE.
Basically, it’s your money and whatever you want to do with it is up to you. But in my opinion, considering that this is your first stick, I’ll tell you that you should think about buying a standardized retail one from either Mad Catz or HORI. I’d personally recommend buying a HORI Real Arcade Pro V3 SA or VX SA depending on what console you want it for. The reason for this is that a retail stick comes out of the box based on a standard layout that many people in the world use. I know you’ve said that you’ve played on your friend’s SFIV stick, but it’s hard to really get a “feel” for sticks until you actually own one yourself in my opinion. The best way to get a feel for them and see what you actually want on them is to start with a standard layout and a reliable case design.
I’d also like to hear more details on what you want to do with this stick. What consoles do you want to use it on? What kind of custom layout or hybrid style did you have in mind? Etc. etc. More information will do you good since it’ll help us help you. Sorry that I can’t get into more about artwork, but that’s out of my area of knowledge.
I will take the price changes into consideration. Prices are meant as a rough guide what to expect and not a defined 100% accurate official price listing.
I also factor in that alot of sticks I found were grossly overpriced on Amazon a few weeks ago. I will end up comparing to other sources to get a better average for pricing.
Thanks for the reply, pimp. About the Amazon thing and when I said they had the SF TE stick on sale for a buck thirty, I didn’t mean literally $1.30. It was on sale for $130, haha. My fault on the confusing slang term. And when I said I’ve used my cousin’s arcade stick, you can practically call it mine, too. Since he lives less than 1 minute away from me, I use his arcade stick all the time since we play fighting games all the time together and he lets me borrow is as well. So I’m definitely accustomed to the arcade stick. I really do want a custom stick with custom art. I won’t lose interest in fighting games unless they get insanely stupid which I don’t think will happen long as gems like KOF 13 is coming out, but anyway… The stick I want is this…
I would like a custom stick with a sleek design kinda like the Super Street fighter 4 TE addition stick. I would also like it to be a hybrid stick that plays on both PS3 and 360 since I have friends who play on 360. I’m more pro-PS3, but if I got a stick and used it regularly it wouldn’t matter since I could use it on both… Now where I can really use the help is parts. I understand that Sanwaa parts are the elite, correct? And that concave parts are decent, too. That’s where my biggest problem would be since I’m new to that, but not the arcade stick itself. I would also like the stick to be Japanese curved close. Just like the SF stick and as I said before, with custom art.
The way things look, I might be better served to start with a PS3 SF stick from what you’re telling me. But I do know without a doubt I really want a custom stick to put my stamp on things. Thanks again for the help, playa.
