nsc wanted to point out that the button arrangement was different from other sticks. They are arranged specifically as Project Soul wanted them for SCV:
X Y B LB
A LT RT RB
But they can be rearranged/rewired any way you want. When I customized mine, I arranged them to match the standard licensed MS layout:
B X Y LB
A LT RT RB
Of course, when I had my artwork printed out, I had 3 of them done - two with the labels for the layouts above, and a third with the labels to match the standard SFIV style layout.
Okay! I had some awesomeness just happen. I got a random check for 250 bucks from a place I used to work, appparently they skimped a few of my checks and recently got audited lol. Win. I was going to go for a SCV because of the cost to quality ratio. So glad I didnt order it yet. Now that I have all these free dollars, I can afford to get what I really wanted. A HitBox! Now I would be getting a Multi console version. 225 plus 20 to ship. But I would end up customizing it. All new color buttons and custom artwork, so in turn another top plate. This is going to be kinda pricy I think, and thats not a big deal thankfully (wooo free money) but I was wondering. Would it be the wisest choice to just buy a brand new HitBox, then tear it up immediatly and replace everything myself and have it cost whatever, or should I try and find someone to make me a custom one. I mean with all this added price, is it smarter to just have someone build me one to my specs to begin with? Or just do it myself? If the wiser choice is to have someone build it for me and have a true custom, is there anyone you guys would reccomend that can do the job amazingly? I know B15sdm is a god of the trade, but Im pretty sure I dont have quite that much money to play with unfortunatly. So any good custom makers that mess with the stickless style?
lol buying a multiconsole hitbox which probably won’t work with next gen.
IMO you should buy a ps3 one and stick to ps3/pc if that’s an option (ie you have ps3 and don’t already have all the xbox games and you don’t need an xbox stick for lan events near you)
If this isn’t viable then go for it because fighting games will still be this gen for a couple years (probably until SFV comes out)
(because learning hitbox hand motions now is worth it, hence my recomendation for the ps3 version, I just personally wouldn’t invest so much at the turn of the console generation but I can understand why one would)
If you’re looking into custom then the best way to get a cheap custom hitbox is talk to that guy who makes the empty plastic cases. he can do the hitbox layout and since you want all different buttons it’s something to consider.
Another question is would you be able to assemble the stick yourself? If no then start looking for modders near you and get a price check, if none are available then you should definitely just buy one since button swapping is simple.
Yeah thats a good point about going all out before the next gen. But I plan on getting Plenty of life out of this gen too. I need 360 compatability, as I own everything for the 360, the pc and ps3 are just bonuses. I guess Ill just get myself an Official Hitbox. That expidites things lol. Looks like Ill be placing my order tomorrow and then waiting by the mailbox until it arrives lol. Ive wanted to try a hitbox for so long.
Whats the Canadian site for Amazon.ca?
Hahaha but seriously, Starting tomorrow Ill be checking my email every 5 minutes to see when it gets done and shipped. Then Ill be staring at the door till it arives. Sooooo amped.
My friend in SC/NC area is going to get into FG’s soon and wants me to pick up a controller for him. Right now I’ve got my hands on a Hori VLX size custom hitbox that’s very nice and weighty. The guy I bought it from also can make a Madcatz TE size hitbox for me. The VLX uses all 30mm while the TE will be the standard all 24mm’s and a 30mm for jump. I’m located in China and don’t know which to get him and obviously have no way of letting him hold them/feel them while he also has never even touched a fight stick. He won’t be travelling much. What do you guys think?
I figured since he has no prior experience there is no real learning curve for him in regards to stick > hitbox transition. Or do you think I should get him a Qanba Q1 Cut with Sanwha buttons and just make him go stick? He wants to start playing SF, BB, Skullgirls, KOF, and SFxT. He has no idea which game he wants to really focus on but wants to keep his options open so he can participate in ANY FG tourney that crops up in his area with RELATIVE confidence (not THAT many hardcore players in the greater Charlotte area of any FG).
Also I have the option to switch to Seimitsu’s. The guys here say Seimitsu’s are no good for fighting games but I imagine on a hitbox where my Sanwha’s register the lightest press perhaps its nice to be able to rest your fingers on the buttons without a registered press or does that result in lost velocity/slower actual button presses?
Seimitsu is fine for fighting games. It’s all personal preference obviously, but you’d have to be mighty particular to think they were “no good” for fighters.
Any thoughts on 24 vs 30mm/Hori VLX vs MCZ TE? Regardless I’m going to have to get him a SOCD cleaner if he chooses the All Button controller. The stick would be easier, more traditional, and less likely to get him flak (especially at Tekken tourneys). The thing is I want him to be able to take ADVANTAGE of his lack of exposure to the fighting game world. I am also concerned that some of the games may not be right for a hitbox controller. I imagine games like BB and UMVC3 will see him struggling in air battles, tiger knee motions are particularly annoying. Do you think these are just minor muscle memory issues?
I am a traditional stick player that just recently got my hands on an all button controller. I’m loving it but it definitely requires more concentration on what my hands are doing 48 hours into training with it.
Well, you say you want him to take advantage of his non-exposure to typical fighting game stuff, but does the hitbox really give an advantage? The idea of a hitbox is really cool, but, I’ve always thought that if a standard stick is good enough for the majority of the pro’s, it’s good enough for me. As long as your friend has played videogames at all, I think the transition from pad->stick will be easier than from pad->hitbox. Overall, if he’s just getting into fighters, I imagine he would get less frustrated learning with a standard stick, but I could be wrong
After reading through most of this post and looking around online, I eventually settled on the HRAP VX SA KAI. Do any of you guys know how much the stick weighs? I’ve seen different reports on Amazon, Hori’s site, here, and other reviews.
How does that weight compare to the Qanba Q4 Q4RAF and the Madcatz TE? Did I sacrifice anything other than PS3 compatibility by going with the KAI instead of the Q4RAF?
Hard to say as each model is different. Typically a retail arcade stick weighs 5 to 8 pounds (no packaging).
The Q4, TE and VX SA Kai all use Sanwa parts. The difference is the PCB.
I have more faith in the Mad Catz and Hori PCBs than the Qanba made PCBs.
I don’t think it matters, like hitboxes are easier on the wrist ergonomically speaking but I can’t imagine hitboxes being objectively better for 3D fighters, but as you mentioned learning stick motions is probably easier. In the end it won’t matter though because both stick and stickless require practice and a time investment, although I feel stick involves less time learning the motion executions because it’s more intuitive to move your hand in a direction to move than to press arbitrary buttons.
I could be wrong though, but to my knowledge no research has been done into how long it takes to learn basic stick execution versus hitbox execution.
I guess if someone is a keyboardist then they have an advantage in learning the hitbox.
Hello everyone! I’m looking to buy my first arcade stick but I could use some help.
I’m trying to find a good stick that works on pc for $150 or less. I mainly play ss4: ae, but recently I’ve been getting into shmups and having fun with those but it gets pretty difficult with a controller. I’m hoping I can find something that could do both genres well. I’ve tried to do research on arcade parts but i’m lost on if I should be looking to get sanwa, seimitsu, or something else.
If anyone could help me I would be much appreciative.
